The Vodacom Bulls captain, Victor Matfield, was again given the sought after Bumble Bee team management award, following his side’s 40-35 win over the Crusaders.
The award, given by team management to the player who contributed in a special way to the team’s performance, was given to Matfield for his exceptional leadership, ability to stay calm under pressure and the fact that he completed the match, despite suffering from severe stomach cramps.

    The other awards are:

Bison (most cleans): Stephan Dippenaar (8 in 35min)

Sniper (most tackles): Deon Stegmann (12 in 65)

Hitman (biggest hit): Fourie du Preez

    Ant (best back): Francois Hougaard

Workhorse (best forward): Gary Botha/Deon Stegmann

Bumble Bee (exceptional effort): Victor Matfield

    Review:

“It was like a test match. The Crusaders played for survival and we played for a home semi-final.

“There was a massive battle at first phase and we are quite happy with the outcome. We had a 100% line-out and had the better of the scrums where we faced an All Black front row.

“Both teams tested the defences in a big way and we showed massive character to win the match in the last minute. The Crusaders only kicked 17 times (the Bulls 34) which is unusual for Super Rugby. We had to adapt to that as well.”

    Johann van Graan (forwards coach).
