Bloemfontein.
UPDATE
Bloemfontein – Star Cheetahs wing Lionel Mapoe has secretly joined the Sharks and the 21-year-old Sevens Springbok is set to start training with his new “team-mates” this week.
The Cheetahs are up in arms about Mapoe “disappearing” from the Free State and his unexpected arrival at the Sharks.
Nobody in the management of Free State rugby knew about Mapoe’s shock move and they are furious about the manner in which one of their top players has been poached.
Free State Rugby Union (FSRU) president Harold Verster maintains that they have a “watertight and valid contract with Mapoe”.
It now appears as if the rugby unions of the Free State and Sharks are heading for a legal showdown that may involve the South African Rugby Union.
The Sharks have also been involved in a legal tussle with the Golden Lions Rugby Union about Louis Ludik and Willem Alberts. Earlier, the Lions and Western Province were also in a dispute over Jaque Fourie.
There was initially talk that Mapoe was a target for the Blue Bulls as they looked to replace Bryan Habana.
Verster says the Cheetahs have a valid contract with Mapoe that stretches until 31 October 2011.
“We got senior legal advice about his contract and are convinced that it is valid,” said Verster.
“We won’t issue a clearance certificate for Lionel to play or train elsewhere. If that happens, the FRU will take steps against the people involved. Mapoe is a talented player that we identified at schools level and offered a contract as a junior. He chose to accept our three-year contract offer.”
Mapoe and his representatives were at logger heads with the FRU over his small salary at the Cheetahs earlier this year. The Cheetahs then looked for sponsorships to increase his salary and were convinced that his unhappiness was something of the past.
Meanwhile, Johann Thormählen reports that Springbok hooker Adriaan Strauss is set to stay in Bloemfontein in spite of big overseas offers.
Strauss was on the shopping list of the Leicester Tigers in England and the Melbourne Rebels in Australia.
again there must be something very wrong with the contract , the Sharks are not stupid as the lions found out , and nor was the stormers in the fourie case
so maybe lets wait and see what the facts are , truth i am sure will come out,
#17u dweeper
sorry this is not another case
the judge declared in the previous case the sharks had acted in accordance with the contract stipulation , so how can this be another case?????
again nothing has been proved yet you guys are quick to throw stone at other unions
must i assume just typically another bulls supporter??
because thats how you guys are thinkiong

This is just another feather in the Bulls cap, remember when they tried to get WO, BB and Habs, they soon found out this one they will lose. But if the others dont know how to write a contract let them get EEE or GBS or any of us bloggers to help them.

No no dont get us Bulls angry, we are doing things right. Look at our trophy cabinet. 😆

“This arose after it was revealed that Mapoe was still signed under a junior contract three weeks into the Super 14, meaning the speedster only earned R200 000 a year whereas he could’ve earned R1.4 million with a new contract with the Bulls.
The deal fell through after the Cheetahs and Bulls agreed that Mapoe should commit to his current contract. Improved contract negotiations were supposed to be held between the Cheetahs and Mapoe, but it is understood that this never happened.”
Dis nou maar een maal so…
blouste , noone is throwing tantrums or shouting , you give urself to much credit mate 😉
you have none of the facts re the bulls attemps to get mapoe etc , dont assume mate get the facts ,

Sharks have already shown their mentality regarding this with Lions …
It clearly states in the interview with FRU that Bulls decided that Mapoe must honour his existing contract.
Why are you defending so much ? Trying to put out fires 😉
here is some more news on the issue
SARPA steps into Mapoe legal battle
Thu, 20 May 2010 11:45
The latest legal battle in the escalating player contract saga is causing concern with the South African Rugby Players’ Union, who are “in discussions” with Sevens Springbok Lionel Mapoe’s agent and attorney.
In a case congruous to the Willem Alberts and Louis Ludik scenario, the Sharks stand accused of having “stolen” the star Cheetahs wing, Mapoe, who has apparently already joined the Sharks at training this week.
It now appears that the Cheetahs and Sharks are heading for a legal showdown – which may also involve the South African Rugby Union – similar to the drama that unfolded after the Sharks poached Alberts and Ludik from the Lions earlier this year.
The Sharks won that battle after taking the matter to court and forcing the Lions to sign clearance papers for the two players.
The Cheetahs, who are up in arms about Mapoe’s sudden disappearance and arrival in Durban, insist they have a “watertight and valid contract with Mapoe”.
Free State Rugby Union (FSRU) President Harold Verster maintains that the Cheetahs have a valid contract with Mapoe that stretches until 31 October 2011.
“We got senior legal advice about his contract and are convinced that it is valid,” Verster told Sport24.
“We won’t issue a clearance certificate for Lionel to play or train elsewhere. If that happens, the FRU will take steps against the people involved. Mapoe is a talented player that we identified at schools level and offered a contract as a junior. He chose to accept our three-year contract offer.”
Eugene Maqwelana, a former provincial player and now the Membership Liaison Advisor at SARPA, told rugby365.com that they are “very concerned” about the current contractual dispute relating to Mapoe.
“This is another indication that the player contracting and player management in South African Rugby is problematic,” Maqwelana said.
He added that they have been in discussions with Mapoe’s agent and attorneys and are monitoring the situation.
“One of the major issues related to the Mapoe case concerns the issue of his junior contract, which has now been converted to senior contract,” Maqwelana told rugby365.com.
“From a player’s perspective players are requesting recognition for when they make the transition from junior rugby to senior rugby.
“This process should entail – although there might be contractual agreements in place – the review of a player’s contractual value when he start performing at a higher level [from the junior ranks to senior provincial or even Super Rugby level].
“Maybe this issue should also be viewed from a moral perspective, rather than just a contractual perspective.”
Earlier reports suggested that Mapoe and his representatives were at logger heads with the FRU over his small salary at the Cheetahs and it was then suggested that he was on the Bulls’ shopping list.
The Cheetahs then looked for sponsorships to increase his salary and were convinced that his unhappiness was something of the past.

Sharks will probably win a legal battle. They have shown that they are in touch with the matter in the Lios case.
I’m not saying they are wrong, just questioning their “honourability” in terms of mutual respect between them and some other unions…
But thats my opinion.
blouste i hear ya mate
my point is just people react pointing fingers and we dont really know all the facts
i mean if the sharks have acted badly and thatsw what comes out in the press i too will slate the likes of rhudolh steauli
till then i hush 😉
From what I read elsewhere the Sharks didn’t approach Mapoe but that Mapoe asked the Sharks for a contract. He can’t be happy with the Cheetah’s if he is actively looking for another team to play for.
Pretorius must first pass Sharks medical
Wed, 19 May 2010 22:41
Injury-prone Springbok flyhalf André Pretorius will arrive in Durban next week to undergo a stringent medical examination before the Sharks will consider offering him a contract.
Sharks Commercial Director Rudolf Straeuli confirmed to rugby365.com on Wednesday that Pretorius is indeed on his way to Durban, but not to play … just yet.
Following a report in Perth, quoting Western Force coach John Mitchell, saying that Pretorius will play for the Sharks in the Currie Cup competition, Straeuli said their medical team first needs to determine if the World Cup winner’s body can still withstand all the rigours of this brutal contact sport.
“André [Pretorius] is a very good player, there is no doubt about that,” Straeuli told rugby365.com.
“However, we want to see if his body is still up to the demands of the game,” the Sharks official added.
The decision to try and lure the 30-year-old Bok No.10 to Durban, follows after negotiations with two other international flyhalves broke down towards the end of the Super 14 season.
They wanted to lure another World Cup winner, Butch James, back from Bath. However, James – himself injury prone, priced himself out of the market and Bath’s asking price (read transfer fee) also made it impossible.
They had managed to get England international Andy Goode for the last two months of the Super 14 season, but he opted to return to the United Kingdom – despite a generous offer from the Durban-based franchise.
In fact flyhalf has been the proverbial poisoned chalice for Sharks players this year. First there was Argentinean Test star Juan Hernandez, who suffered a season-ending back injury, and then Steve Meyer, brought back from France before he ‘retired’ from the game for personal reasons.
With Ruan Pienaar set to be tied up with international commitments and talented Monty Dumond’s lack of experience a concern, the Sharks have been looking for a more experienced No.10.
The Force signed Pretorius as their marquee international for the 2010 season, but he tore his hamstring in a pre-season training session and has been sidelined the entire season.
This follows a succession of knee, ankle, hamstring and back problems that have plagued the 30-year-old and limited him to just 31 Test appearances since his debut against Wales in 2002.
He has compiled just shy of 650 points in Super Rugby for the Lions and Cats. The creative playmaker’s attacking potency has seen him amass 171 points for the Springboks.
