The latest Tweet from John Smit on social networking site, Twitter, suggests that the Bok captain had an issue with the way Jonathan Kaplan handled the scrums in the game between the Sharks and Bulls on Saturday. As a result, the Bok and Sharks skipper injured his neck in a scrum engagement and will be going in for a precautionary scan on his neck.
“Scan on my neck today, with the ref getting the engage setup distance wrong my neck got caught in an engage & now its a tad sore! Hold thumbs,” said Smit on Twitter.
It is hardly news the Durban based franchise will welcome, given that they lost Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis to a serious neck injury in the build-up to the crunch game against the Bulls last week.
Du Plessis underwent surgery on a damaged vertebra in his neck on Thursday morning and Sharks head coach John Plumtree said on Saturday that early speculation that the combative hooker would be out for only six weeks was way too optimistic.
“The injury is far more serious than that and he is not expected to play for at least three months.”
Im my honest opinion the new scrum rules….Crouch-Touch-Pause-Engage seems to have made a mess of the scrums.Think back test matches of the past, when the game was still amature, scrums where hard, but i don`t recall seeing so many reset scrums.
Law interpretations seem to be inconsistent amongst some of the refs.
Would like to see rucking brought back too….would clear the maul area of those trying to slow the game
The latest tweet from John Smit on social networking site, Twitter, suggests the Sharks captain thankfully hasn’t suffered serious damage to his neck as was initially feared.
Thankfully no spinal damage, just some soft tissue issues so hoping it will settle for Saturday.Anti inflams for breakie, lunch & supper!!!, Smit said.
Meanwhile, in more bad news for the Sharks, lock Johann Muller appears to have played his last game for the Sharks after fracturing the same arm that sidelined him for a lengthy period last year.
Muller has signed a contract to join Ulster after the completion of the Super 14.
Tim Noakes the UCT sports professor warned of the implications of playing too much rugby resulting in burnout and fatigue and injuries. Our top Boks should play less games this year,we need them to be fresh come WC 2011.
