Steyn sent an SMS to the coach earlier this week to withdraw from the Bok side that will play Wales in Cardiff on June 5, but work is being done behind the scenes to resolve their differences.

Article from News24  Written by Hendrik Cronjé

(A New development and update appears at the bottom of this Atricle)

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers and fullback Frans Steyn are set to hold an emergency meeting in Johannesburg on Friday in a bid to save their strained relationship.

There have been problems between coach and player for some time.

It appears as if there is little communication between the two and that is probably the biggest reason for Steyn’s decision to withdraw from the Bok side that is flying out to London on Sunday.

Steyn apparently took the decision in the interests of his team-mates as he does not want to disadvantage them.

He recently tried to contact De Villiers, but a high-ranking South African Rugby Union (SARU) official apparently refused to give him the Bok coach’s new cellphone number.

SARU alleged that it’s impossible to contact Steyn in Paris where he plays for French club Racing Metro.

Steyn, who is currently visiting a dairy farm near Bethlehem in the Free State, has a French and South African cell number, which makes it difficult for SARU.

If the differences between the parties are not addressed at Saturday’s meeting, the Bok coach may have to pick a different fullback for the Test against Wales.

Zane Kirchner (Bulls) and Joe Pietersen (Stormers) will be strong contenders, while it’s a known fact that Cheetahs fullback Hennie Daniller was asked to arrange a visa.

The 23-year-old Steyn recently struck a drop goal of over 60 metres for Racing Metro against Clermont.

A number of stakeholders, including selection convenor Peter Jooste and Steyn’s agent, Gerrie Swart, will attend the meeting in Johannesburg.

This player is i fast becoming as disruptive as Luke Watson was. If one read the comments you find a lot of unfair blame being dished out to Peter de Villiers and SARU. He was handed a lifeline by Peter de Villiers. The Frans Steyn brigade immediately joined forces behind him against the coach.

Update: Friday late afternoon, 28 May 2010:

Frans Steyn has confirmed his availability for the Springboks in their Test match against Wales in Cardiff on June 5, following a meeting with Springbok coach Peter de Villiers on Friday.

The meeting included convenor of Springbok selectors Peter Jooste and Gerrie Swart, Frans Steyn’s agent.

“We discussed our relationship over the past few months and certain concerns of Frans were addressed and resolved,” said De Villiers.

“Frans confirmed his loyalty and commitment to the Springboks and people of South Africa and I can’t wait to see him back in green and gold.”

Steyn’s future availability for the Springboks will be arranged with his club, Racing Metro.

The meeting also discussed statements and documentary evidence submitted to De Villiers.

He accepted the contents and apologised for any negative interpretations concerning the reputation and good name of Frans Steyn and Mr Swart, brought about by quotes attributed to him in the media.

The apology was accepted.

All parties now regard the matter as closed and will make no further comment on the subject.

According to me rules have changed and if you played for one country an international match you can’t play for another…

And the rest of the boks speak of Peter with so much respect it is just Frans that has a problem, no he is a great player but not bigger than the game pick Zane or Joe…

Saru needs to get their act together. FS is a necessity for the World Cup.

  • 3

How can FS be compared to Luke Watson. What an insult to FS

  • 4

Francois Steyn must go and fluck himself. He thinks he is such a bloody Superstar. I read that he is in dispute regarding what he is being paid to play for the Springboks, this has nothing to do with a sour relationship.

I am sorry, but SA should not have to beg a player to wear the Green and Gold, he is an arrogant little prick, who offers nothing more or less that the other candidates to the 15 jersey. IF SA isn’t good enough to win a test without a 60m drop, then we should lose.

Screw Francois Steyn, I am sick of his little primadonna act. If I was PDV I’d cut my losses immediately.

  • 5

I hope FS NEVER represents ANY SA team again.

  • 6

If all the reports are true i have to agree with you on this one Saint. This is not Opra, there is nothing to talk about, do you want to play or not?

Are there any sources to this article?
    What is the primary source?

Trouble is there is so much cr@p in the media these days I never know what to believe and what not to believe.
Anyone can blog anything and that is why sources are important. They allow the reader to take the quality of the source into consideration.

Anyway if one is quoting another media source it is common courtesy to give credit accordingly.

ok, ive been to sport24 from where this article originated
ive picked up a few things from the article
    1. the author is definately taking the side of fsteyn on this one
    2. the article even had a link to the clip of the 60m dropgoal that was also featured on here a few weeks ago
    3. no attempt was made to get another view, that is, no contact was made with pdv or anyone at sarugby.

this make it difficult to decide who really is at fault here as the author also seem to contradict himself.

hope the next journalist tackling this issue would make a better job of it.

anyway, expect sarugby, fsteyn and anyone else involved in this issue to close up shop after this poor effort of an article (not talking about you here, super)

    @ Ashley:

Thanks I now went to have a look. Hendrik Cronjé is the author there and guess what he does not quote his sources.
Some writers are reliable, some not. I don’t really know Cronje except that this article sucks. All unnamed sources which for all we know could be Steyn’s ex schoolmate from Grey. We just don’t know.

I wasn’t really criticizing Super except to say that perhaps he could have prefaced his article with “According to sport24 (or whoever he got the info from)
Seeing RT lifted certain parts verbatim sport24 ought to be cited even if they did write their own article poorly.

This blog is not the only one guilty of this occasionally. Keo’s blog and the Sharksworld are not better, no worse.
I have had this debate on keo and someone told me that blogs are informal so sources are not needed. Nonsense. If you lift part of an article you give credit.

With this article I have no idea what the truth is so I will reserve judgment.
In cases like this often both parties shared out the mistakes.

And sources are a big thing for me – 25 years ago poor citations cost me marks at university

most propably someone who knows someone that knows someone who lives next to someone that knows someone thats the colleague of someone who knows someone that lives next to someone who knows someone that ….. et etc etc!!
….. or from the way the article was written it seems like it, lol
(again super, not pointing a finger at you!!)

  • 11

    @ Biscuit:
You are so right about quoting sources! I’ve raised this matter before and still articles are lifted without proper acknowledgement. My observation is that GBS is consistent in quoting sources and there was a post by GBS some time ago to request authors and bloggers to quote their sources as he gets blamed for copyright infringements. The “blogging is informal story” is nonsense in my opinion, one can’t take someone else’s work and claim it as your own.

i’m with you on that one

Biscuit and Ashley: Now this is a contradiction in terms: SB lifted the article, you don’t agree but you don’t blame SB? SB is a big guy (and a Bull) he can take criticism, constructive criticism, I am sure. He told me so over a whiskey while he was dreaming about seagulls!

  • 14

    13@ Boerboel:
    naaaaaaah
i’m just acknowledging that i know that he didnt write the article!! 😆

    btw
i hope you told him that theres no such thing as BLUE seagulls? 😉

  • 15

    o btw
boots and all will broadcast from the Sakhumzi restaurant on Vilikazi street in Orlando tonight!!
    one of the special guests?
    winnie madikizela mandela!
😀 i’m sure the likes of super, gbs, bdb and blouste will be watching THAT part of the show from BEHIND their couches!! 😆

  • 16

    @ Ashley:
SB takes photographs of anything that moves! While he was in Cape Town on holiday we had a braai at my home and all he could show was seagulls!

  • 17

    16@ Boerboel:
are you trying to tell me that was also the first time the poor guy saw the sea? 😉

FS moet loop k*k.

FOK HOM.

  • 19

    @ Ashley:
    Can’t comment on that one…..

  • 20

    19@ Boerboel:
    banggat!! 😆

  • 21

    @ Ashley:
SB is ‘n moerse groot ou, soos ek reeds gese het!!!!!!

  • 22

    boerboel @ 19

  • 23

Frans Steyn is a class act. Sources were probably made up. We don’t have a better fullback than FS. We live in a professional era, pay the man what he is worth.

A whole team of second stringers that are very loyal to SA is not going to win us the World Cup.

I hope SARU and FS can come to the party and sort out their differences.

  • 24

    Wat gaan hier aan ?

    Ashley – Moegoe !!! 😉

    @ Biscuit:
    @ Boerboel:

    Hellooooooooooooo

I’m on dimm today, drank too much red wine last night at the opening of a new Banyard Theatre in the Boksburg area (where the old IMax theatre used to be).

The show was an ABBA & QUEEN Tribute…. the ABBA songs took me back to 1976 and 1977 on the bus to the Standard 4 tour of the school… good old memories. The QUEEN songs took me back to my high school days.

Handbriekie did not think much of the show, I thought it was excellent…

Got to bed at about 2:00am this morning…. eishhhhhhhhh

    Was FS aanbetref…

Sources have to be quoted, it is a directive I’ve given through to Authors on this blog.

A bit of leniency is asked for though, all of us here on R-T are rugby lovers, not journalists.
