Do you realize what this means for Bulls rugby? This was another step up. And be afraid we will go even higher.
To our Sanzar friends in New Zealand and Australia who lost total intrest in this title challenge i have words that cant be spoken here. Shame on you. Now after this final it is OK to concentrate on the test and 3N series but dammit you fought for this very same title the Bulls won for a 3rd time , for weeks, why so quick to make it worthless? Shame on you, and i hope the Springboks teach you some manners in the upcoming Tests.
The Game.
First five Morne Steyn has kicked 20 points to help the Bulls clinch their third Super 14 title in four years as they beat South African rivals the Stormers 25-17 in the final at the Orlando Stadium.
Steyn kicked six penalties and converted Francois Hougaard’s brilliant individual try to make sure the holders were always clear of a Stormers team that fought back bravely in the second half from a 16-3 deficit at the break.
The Bulls enjoyed a telling advantage at scrum time, with three of Steyn’s penalties coming after the retreating Stormers had infringed in that set-piece.
Hougaard’s try came in the 25th minute as he sped through a gap in the Stormers’ defensive line between locks Andries Bekker and Adriaan Fondse, running from the 10 metre line before sidestepping fullback Joe Pietersen in the last line of defence.
The try capped a thoroughly dominant first half for the Bulls, who looked well in control as Steyn added three penalties to the try, so it came as a surprise when the home side made a scrappy start to the second half and allowed the visitors from Cape Town back into the game.
Wing Bryan Habana scored an opportunist intercept try in the 54th minute when Steyn passed straight to his former team mate after the Bulls won messy ball from a ruck on their own 10m line. Habana scored under the poles to give first five Peter Grant an easy conversion, putting the Stormers back into contention at 16-10 down.
But with a capacity crowd of 36,000 providing a sea of light blue support, with the noisy accompaniment of plastic horns known locally as “vuvuzelas”, the Bulls remained composed and shut out the Stormers by playing in their territory and earning penalties.
The Stormers, in their first Super 14 final, did claim a second try with just two minutes remaining when sniping halfback Enrico Januarie was stopped just short of the line, but flanker Francois Louw picked up the ball and scored.
Does this version sound right?
Anyway the Bulls had the guts and determination to pull this one through. And we earend the right to brag as the 2nd best ever S14 team. Yes from now on the Bulls will step on the accelerator and the rest will play catch – up.
Maybe we should put up a thread for the “whining Stormers”…
Geez….some of your supporters are just unbelieveable….really !!!
Sulking Schalk – Care to tell me why your troops were so poor under the high ball for example ?
i will leave that honor to KP or someone else.
Yeah it is sad, but that is sport if you win you do sound arrogant. As hard as i try to be calm, nothing i say will be seen with purity. They WILL accuse me of arrogance. So to hell with them i am a Bull and we told you so. We told you our experience was too much. Back to the drawing board for you.
Listen for once you do have a light 5, and aaaagh shame mr Bekker your fat lip was deserved how could you even dare to challenge the BOSS.
Oooh and apologies to FL and coaching staff . You were perfectly right , that rest week was the masterstroke of 2010.
The “light 5”
Hmm yes but who really had their arses handed to them were the light 14, 15 etc.
Hougaard made Aplon his bitch hey Sainty ….?
and Pieterson…shame….
J.Fourie was man-handled by Meisiekind too… 😯 !!!!
@ Blouste:
Wynand is awesome, this guy cling to anything he gets his hands too. I was impressed by his bulldogged defense. When he grabs you he does not let you go.
Net soos jy se super…..
Kan nie wag om met ons Stormpies maatjies te praat nie 😉
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nag almal !!!
With the Super 14 final over it is time to dish out awards.
The first award goes to the Stormers/WP management.
They had the total wisdom of all wisdom NOT to award Francois Hougaard with any contract at WP.
To their greatest enjoyment he was man of the match today.
For the Bulls.
The greatest decision ever made be men who knows the best.
Congratulations!
My second award goes to the southern Bekkers.
In my life time of playing and watching rugby Hennie and Abdries were the greatest players to crack under pressure.
Hi guys, if you ever played sport, yip any sport at any level, you will know this simple fact – there is only only one thing more difficult than being a good loser and that is being a good winner. This is your third try at getting it right – you’re not going to let me and the country down again are you?

“Ja, ek was ongelukkig.
Maar nou ja julle was tonne beter as laasjaar se finaliste.Daar is geen rede om sleg te voel nie.
Habana , hoe voel dit om aan die ander kant te staan? Daardie drie van jou sou die ander span gebreek het as jy dit in n blou trui gedoen het. Verskil ne.
Well said “Met Uysh” on News 24 Blogs
“No one can contest that the Bulls fully deserved the victory, and kudo’s to them. Stormers, you guys made me proud to play in the final, but you guys came up against a confident, mature and well organised squad. Nothing to be ashamed of Stormers, you played with honor and with spirit and you may hold your heads up high as you were the most deserving team to face the Champions. Don’t worry Stormers, we still love you!!”
And i agree with him, “Nothing to be ashamed of Stormers, you played with honor and with spirit”
Once again congrats to the Bulls. The best team in the 2010 S14 won. The Stormers were good, but not good enough to win.
I don’t get it. Why are the Stormers blaming the ref? Catch a wakeup. I watched the game again this morning. Stormers didn’t take 3 very kickable penalties at goal, rather opting for the lineout or quick tap. Why not take the 9 points on offer? It’s a final for crying in a bucket. With January’s lucky try the Stormers might have won the game if they showed BMT in the game.
Blaming the ref, seriously???? I expect a better excuse than that. It’s really lame!!!
Just have a look at Duane Vermeulen’s body language when he fielded a kick that went into touch just after the brilliant FH try. That’s when they lost the game mentally, and not taking points on offer.
Craig Joubert was poor.
Ricky scored a ghost try.
Duane is my choice for Bok 8 – Spies was nowhere.
Duvenhage was useless – Ricky should’ve started imo.
Aplon & Pieterson too small and got monstered.
Hougaardt needs a haircut and a couple of klaps.
Bulls were best side – no doubt.
9 months from now — lots of new bulls supporters in Soweto.
“And we earend the right to brag as the 2nd best ever S14 team.”
Long way to go and who cares about 2nd? Really? Stick to best over last 4 years.
No-one cares who comes second, unless your’e a sexual athlete like me who always comes second ( . )( . )
@ Pam Anderson:
Watch the game again and look specifically what Spies did. That guy was awesome. The Bulls front row tackled the sh%t out of the Stormers. Hell this game is shown again now maybe i must enjoy it for a 3rd time.
@ superBul:
If Spies was awesome then Duane was uber-awesome! Guthro was huge last night. Enjoy the 3rd viewing but don’t drink so much this time!
@ superBul:
French test will show how far Spies has to go — Hardinordequy the premier 8 in world rugby.
@ Pam Anderson:
I know who will be picked for the Springboks and i think everyone who wants to replace Spies must open their eyes. The combination 8,9,10 is brilliant and any good coach knows how impotent combinations is. PdeV knows it and if the WP supporters have any national responsibility they will stop trying to break up die Bok combinations that worked so well.
Everyone said before the game that we must look at the back 3 as a combination and there i think the Bulls did better with Spies, Stegman and Dewalt. What a player we have there in Dewalt.
Morning Super, I’m happy that the Bulls make you happy, mate – even a third time, hehe! I believe like many others, that Spies is a barometer for how well the Bulls play: when the Bulls are firing then Spies is all over the field and scoring tries. Yesterday it didnt happen and as a consequence he has yet to impress when the goong gets tight and tuff.
more almal die stormers moet na hull voorry kyk dis waar hulle die meeste punte afgestaan het hulle swakste skakel is en bly verbrokkel harris eintlik is dit net tiaan wat iets beteken die res is nie eers klubrugby gehalte nie
