The Stormers steamrollered the fast-fading Chiefs 15-49 Friday in a six-try romp that took the South African outfit to the top of the Super 14 standings.

The Stormers have the best defensive record this season and they proved their attacking credentials against the Chiefs, who scored two tries in reply.

The South African side’s forwards outmuscled their opponents, with captain Schalk Burger and giant lock Andries Bekker also running rampant in open play alongside a slick backline.

After winning their first three games of the season, the Chiefs have tumbled to their fifth loss from nine games, and were unable to retain possession for long periods due to poor handling and speculative passing.

Coming off a morale-boosting 33-21 win against the Auckland Blues last week, the Stormers picked up where they left off to secure their seventh win from nine games.

“It’s tough to go back-to-back (with consecutive wins) in this competition but we managed to do it, so a pretty awesome week,” Burger said.

“The big thing is we’ve concentrated on accuracy and our structure and we’ve pitched up these two weeks and shown we can score some points.”

The first 30 minutes belonged to the Stormers, who played with great composure from the opening whistle, as opposed to the more erratic home side.

A brilliant try after 22 minutes which covered at least 80 metres and went through nine sets of hands was a just reward for the Stormers’ pressure.

Flanker Burger featured twice in the movement, which started with a break by fullback Gio Aplon, another standout performer.

The fullback featured again in the second try after bursting around two tacklers to release number eight Duane Vermeulen for a sprint to the line.

A last-gasp try in the spell by Chiefs flanker Tanerau Latimer reduced the difference to 20-10 at halftime.

Number eight Sione Lauaki made the try, breaking from the back of a scrum in the Stormers 22, and fending off Burger before slipping a great little offload to Latimer.

But the Stormers bounced back quickly in the second half with a try to roving hooker Tiaan Liebenberg, and stretched their lead further with touchdowns to winger Sireli Naqelevuki, Bekker and replacement hooker Deon Fourie.

Chiefs fullback Tim Nanai-Williams deftly avoided being bundled into touch to score after 68 minutes but the game was well out of reach by then.

Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant kicked four conversions and three penalties, while Stephen Donald kicked five points for the Chiefs.

Guess who’s currently top of the log bulle. I think it is us actually playing total rugby.

Guess who can’t count! How many games played? Will you admit we are playing total rugby as well if we beat the Redsconvinvingly as well? I thought not!

well, wez got a point … we ARE currently top of the log, lol
on a more serious note … it seems like the bulls are indeed trying to play “total rugby” (whatever that is). my concern, as i’ve stated from the start of the s14 is that it seems like the bulls are moving away from their strength.
wont it make more sense to take that strength and ADD to that?

If the finals was next week i would pack all my money on a bet for you guys.

Matfield better catch a wake up, Bekker is playing brilliantly at centre. No just a joke ??? or nei.

    4@ Wez#### – Here is grootblou####!!

I was very pleased this morning with the Stormers performance, I’ll have you know… go look at my comments on the actual game thread.

It does not help to mince words, the Stormers played a balanced and complete game and it was great to see the Bokke in that team performing they way they did… here I refer to Langbek, Schalla, Jaque Fourie and Bryan Habana specifically.

It was also good to see the excellent performances of Tiaan Liebenberg and Deon Fourie…. currently those 2 and Gary Botha are the 3 best hookers in SA… with Adriaan Strauss deserving a side-mention.

But looking at Gio GifAplontjie… man, that little man was on fire!

And for a change again, Knock-a-levuki was the destructive tank of a man… running over quite a few who suddenly knew the bus was full!

Francois Louw and Duane Vermeulen were outstanding, Duvenage was very good (and clearly should now always be 1st choice at the Stormpoppies), Peter Grant had a solid enough match, Juan de Jongh was the quiet one in that whole backline.

I thought that Fondse and his replacement, Anton van Zyl, did the hard work, nothing wrong there… oh and the props, nothing wrong there either.

ALl in all a complete performance gentlemen, congrats to the Stormers…. they will be tough to beat… but the Bulls aim to do it, when it matters….

We all stood behind the Stormers this morning, so I hope the Bulls and much later the Sharks are met with the same solid South African support tomorrow, after all it would be good for the Sharks, the Stormers and the Bulls if the Bulls beat the Reds and the Sharks really destroy the Lions.

The Lions and Cheetahs are not in the running in the Super 14 anymore so they do not deserve to win anymore as far as I’m concerned, not that my loyalties ever favoured the Lions…… so my loyalties now lie with the Bulls (first and foremost), then the Stormers and then the Sharks (because they still have a faint hope)…

The Sharks need to work for 5 Log points from every game now and rack up the points differnce in the games.

To come back to Wez####’s question whether I was speechless…. there are very few things which render me speechless, except the Bulls… and a very beautiful woman… Handbriekie!

Well who would have imagined such a winning margin for the Stormers!!

Excellent news for their supporters…..Sounds like it was a fantastic match too.

Hope the Bulls replicate the margin and performance for us Blue Followers….
