Juan Smith will miss the Cheetahs match against the Brumbies after the terrible news of his fathers death.
Smith snr. suffered from a haert attack on the 26th of March and was rushed off to hospital. Juan subsequently missed the following two games against the Reds and Waratahs.
He joined the Cheetahs on Monday to play the Brumbies the coming weekend since his father was expected to recover after returning to a stable condition.
Sadly his father passed away earlier today (8 April) and Juan will fly back to South Africa on Friday.
Our sincerest condolences to Juan and his family and they will be in our prayers in this difficult time.
A Media release has just been received from the Cheetahs Union:
Dear media

The following changes were made to the team.
Barend Pieterse moves from no. 4 to no. 7.
Izak van der Westhuizen moves up from the reserve bench to no. 4.
Nico Breedt will replace Izak van der Westhuizen on the bench.
R.I.P. Our prayers are with Juan and the Smith family
Yes Tripples ,it’s a terrible time in your life when you lose a parent. Difficult time for the family ahead.
Just mentioned this on another thread. But here is the right place.
Very sad to hear this. Juan our thoughts are with you and your family, in this very sad time. Very sad to lose a father.
RIP. Mr. Smith.
Blouste I have been very fortunate, both my parents still around although it has been touch and go with my Dad a few times. I really feel for them
Oi, Juan my thoughts are with you.
I know what it feels like to lose first one parent and 20 months ago I also lost my father, GBS Maksimus.
These parents were given as “giants in our lives” and we eventually learn and cope by living without them but one never forgets them and one misses them terribly.
Best wishes.
Today I will think about Mamma Handbriekie Maksimus and GBS Maksimus a lot…. and miss them some more….
Gbs
Eenkeer het iemand vir my gese, die hartseer word minder met tyd ,maar die verlange nooit…
Waar woorde…
Condolences to the family. Never Forget!!!
I lost my Father when I was 20, and for many years shut it out of my life.
Now that I’m well past the age he was when he died I think more and more about him.
Only recently realised how important our Parents are to our overall development as people.
Juan our thoughts are with you and your family, in this very sad time.
My condolences to Juan and his family at such a sad time. RIP.
I read speculation that Juan’s father, Giel, has in fact died from Rift Valley Fever (Slenkdalkoors).
Apparently 6 people have died recently from Rift Valley Fever in SA, 4 from the Free State and 2 from elsewhere.
The Fever apparently has it’s origin in Kenia initially and one apparently contracts this Fever from infected animal meat or from mosquito’s who carry the infected virus.
Whatever the situation, Juan’s father remains in our thoughts!
