A lot of debate has been doing the rounds in terms of whom the more successful team in Super Rugby is…
We all know about the Crusaders incredible record in the tournament, and other teams have thrown in their weight aswell. But history is exactly that…history ,so what’s the most recent tendencies.
Here are some interesting reading I came across on “Pick & Go” website
Even with the Bulls dismal performances in earlier years in the Super Rugby tournament they have managed to take pole position in a log that works on the same principal as the IRB World Rankings. Teams like the Brumbies and Waratahs also suprise in relatively high log positions, and even the Stormers who has only recently hit the right note are well on the up.
Note that these rankings are all the way back, since the start of the 1996 Super 12 tournament up untill now.
This can be compared to NZ topping the world rankings more often than not although they have’nt seen the World Cup trophy in some 23 years, but the form team over the last period of time will be the team most rewarded.

“This is pick & go’s new Super Rugby ranking table
which shows the ranking point positions of each team since the first Super12 match in 1996.Each team started on 80 points and they move up and down relative to each other using the same points exchange system that the IRB use for ranking Test matches.Exchange points are doubled for semis & finals.”

Log coutesy of “Pick & Go”
In terms of trophy winners in Super rugby here are the list.
Crusaders = 7
Blues = 3
Brumbies = 2
Queensland = 2
Transvaal = 1
Bulls = 2
Although the Crusaders have clearly topped the before mentioned list, are teams like the Bulls realisticly making a shift as far as tournament domination are concerned?
I think the answer is clearly yes at this point in time, but the question remains… Can they build on recent and past success…?
2010 will be another building block towards this goal should the Bulls be successful in defending their title…
Blouste –
eish typos
bulls
lions
sharks
stormers
cheetahs
thats all time super 10, 12 or 14
super 14 sa teams are
bulls
sharks
stormers
cheetahs
lions
Sharky – I agree, maybe it should be subdivided into four year cycles, between world cups.
sharky forever…
Thats the whole point…
Aus have won 2 WC trophies… but where are they on the IRB rankings ?
The log gives an indication of current form like mentioned…
Who won how many trophies is irrelevant in this standings as for example the Lions have previously won 1, but that does nothing for their current form,read log position.
blouste but take into account because the bulls are currently ontop the points are more
if points were added the same amount for every year and then divided you would see a different picture
infact the sharks for consistency would move way up
no doubt in the history of super rugby the saders are the best team
Sharky
Gaan ‘n tawwe tawwe game wees !!!
this is why to me one should not worry about the past then
and say for those years saders were tops
now for this year the super rugby top team is bulls for example
my point exactly blouste trhus i am scared of them
but i also believe if we play them as well as what we did the last 2 weeks away from home we can beat them
lets remember the canes are no push over at home
the highlanders we beat at the house of pain, we know thats never easy
sharky…
No, each team started on 80 points back in 1996.
It works the same as the IRB rankings so pressumeably you will earn more points for upsetting another team that is way up on the log etc.
These are the points as being calculated from ’96 onwards, obviously dropping and gaining points in between.
Also note double points are allocated for semi’s and final’s… in wich the Bulls played a couple in the last 5 years…
I’m worried about the Blues for this coming weekend…
The Sharks / Reds game is going to be tough and interesting… I think the Sharks have started to hit their straps… will be close!
@ 41
And when you have a really bad year, you’ll drop a lot of points wich you will have to make up the following year if you want to better your log position…
agrees with rudi
as for the bulls blues, i have a bad feeling , normally on super bru i hit the bulls for a win easily
today i couldnt
onerb ek stem met jou saam
Onerb
All to play for !!!
If we go according to winning the cup, then of course it has to be like this:
Bulls – 2
Lions – 1
Sharks
Stormers
Cheethas.
If we look at it in a whole, then:
Bulls
Sharks
Stormers
Cheetahs
Lions.
Sharks have been the most consistent team, but we have also got that WOODEN SPOON
@ 54
He he he…
So daar is tog “method in the madness”…
@ 55 Puma
Hiya Puma… how are you doing?
Tough game this weekend for your team mate….
Position 2-6 are relatively close with only one or two games in it…
And then so are position 7-10 and then followed by 11-14…
Bulls have obviously build up quite a lead having lost their last game back in the middle of the compo last year…
So really, if anything consistency gets rewarded…
Bulls are already on a run of 12 consecutive Super 14 wins (15 on the trot at Loftus)… I think that hugely counts in their favour with recent results carrying more weight than older results.
@ 59 – Exactly !!! Giving an indication of the currently in form team…
