So I took my laaitie out to Newlands on Saturday for what was his first experience of the ground all WP fans love and cherish.

Kitted in WP gear, with a WP flag, I thought it would be a day he would never forget – his first visit to Newlands!

I chose this day for two reasons, it was a Vodacom Cup game so I knew there would be few spectators and parking and moving around will be easy with a 3-year old, and the WP side had some decent players named in the side taking on an international Pampas side – so it all was set for a memorable afternoon.

Kick-off was at 17:00 and having got there an hour before the time, we spent the first part of the Newlands experience visiting the rugby shop across the Main Stand where he got his WP flag. And after we enjoyed some Argie supporters singing and dancing outside the stadium, we made our way to the Main Stand to take our seats.

From this point on, I was glad that as a 3-year old, he understood very little of rugby (he cheers anyone that runs with the ball and they all play for ‘Prooovvviiiiinccceee’ according to him) because what unfolded in front of us, was some of the biggest load of shit I have ever had the privilege to witness at Newlands, or by any WP rugby team in history.

I should have known better though, because my brother who more or less watches almost all their games said they were completely useless but I did not want to listen.

I mean, how bad can a team be that has names like:

Morgan Newman, Dylan Des Fountain, Conrad Hoffmann, Pieter Myburgh, Adriaan Fondse and Hanyani Shimange?

Not to mention upcoming talents like Jurgen Visser, Johann Sadie and JJ Engelbrecht?

I mean almost half this team has Super rugby experience!

Well let me tell you now, you should not let that fool you, because in my books any of the Varsity Cup teams could have given these bunch of plonkers a hiding on the day.

But what is it that WP with these big name players, and this is not the first year the Vodacom Cup side has these types of players in here, never makes it anywhere in this competition (Vodacom Cup)?

Sure there are disruptions with players moving up and down from the Stormers setup but every Vodacom Cup team sits in the same boat here.

Well to my surprise (NOT) it was mentioned to me that the same coach has been in charge of this team for the last 4 odd years or something… one Jerome Paarwater…

Can someone please explain to me how we can continue to support mediocrity in WP Rugby please? All the while losing coaches like Pieter Rossouw, who is largely credited with the new more complete rugby the Bulls are playing (after he begged WP for an offer before he had to leave for his job at the Bulls).

WP Rugby has some of the best schools, best universities and currently the best club in rugby in South Africa in its region, yet teams lower down in the structures in WP Rugby like Jerome’s team continue to disappoint and all the while WP continues to lose talented youngsters and coaches.

Well looking at the rubbish I witnessed on Saturday, I am not surprised…

As for the game, I can also tell you the Pampas were cheated out of a win too…

One thing is for damn sure, I will not take my son to any Vodacom Cup games in future, I fear he might actually grasp onto the concept of rugby and refuse to come with me to Newlands ever again!

    Sjoe… hard words…

But hey, I agree on Paarwater…

I have an idea, Morné…. raise your son to be a Bulletjie…. hahaha

For all I care kan WP maar eerder vir Chean Roux aanstel as afrigter van doe VC span! Niemand anders nie as Tinus Linee?

  • 3

“Paarwater” translated roughly equals AMBIOTIC FLUID

    Hehehehe

I think his water broke years and years ago…. and he’s experiencing a “dry run”…

  • 4

    (s)Paarwater, drink beer!

    (s)Paarwater, bad saam!

  • 5

    KP,

You must be #%^&*(@ joking, Linee???

    GBS,

    That was kak funny.

  • 6

Although I can think of a lot more Cape Town influenced slang to better describe ambiotic fluid… 😉

    😆

Morgan Newman, Dylan Des Fountain, Conrad Hoffmann, Pieter Myburgh, Adriaan Fondse and Hanyani Shimange

  • 9

    6@ Morne – Hehehehe

    Komgom… hehehe

  • 10

Fondse was surplus to requirements at the bulls and will not make their team in the near future either.

  • 11

  • 12

Hallo Manne..long time no see…Onerb, Conrad Hoffman en Pieter Myburgh is geen journeymen nie.

    10/10 for honesty Morne 😐

    Onerb,

The Argies are typical Argies, hard and physical boys but no real superstars.

I think they could klap a few teams in the VC but they are, like all Argies, an emotional bunch and seem to lose it a bit when things dont go their way.

But they have a strong pack, which should serve them well.

  • 17

  • 19

  • 21

    #18,

I think you will find that the Bulls are starting to create structures to win competitions at all levels – little is used for development but rather the best for each level of competition is picked to win the competition.

They buy the best youngsters around the country for their age-group assaults, the best naturally progress to the lesser competition like the Vodacom Cup, together with the ones not quite good enough for the Super 14. Same with the CC, the best minus their Bok players they used are played here, and then of course in Super rugby they play the best available and you will also see an aggressive approach in buying top quality players at this level (Super 14) in the next year or two.

  • 22

  • 23

21 – Why do you think they will have to buy if their current structures are sufficient?

  • 24

    #21,

I wonder if you Bulls boys noticed this???

Of course you will not know about the planned aggressive recruitment drive but given who will leave in 2011 it is rather obvious…

  • 25

22@ Onerb – Ek het net so 2 15-man games gesien waarin Mastriet gespeel het, maar ek het hom taamlik deeglik dopgehou in die IRB 7’s, waar hy vir die Bokkies gejol het.

  • 26

    #23,

The Bulls are simply losing too much in way of experience in 2011 to be competitive in 2012 if not replaced correctly.

Vic, Bakkies, Danie, FDP are about 100% goners post 2011.

You can add some other key players I know of who might also go and play out to a more lucrative contract overseas or hang up their boots.

  • 27

24@ Morne – Considering who will leave… well I think the Bulls are already grooming able replacements…. Flip van der Merwe, Francois Hougaard to slot in at scrumhalf…

I think most of the successors are there already…

Who will leave, Matfield, Bakkies, Oupa Danie Pakslae, Fourie du Preez, Moses, Pedrie.. that’s about it… we need able replacements for the 1st 4 only…. well we actually need a No 5 Lock only, really… How’s about we buy Langbek…. hehehehe

  • 28

24 – Well we’ll need a couple of experienced players.

    Locks –

Flip will be settled, first choice the whole 2010 cc and starting a game or 2 in 2011, Full CC in 2011.
Kruger is rumoured to be the best lock up north currently(Probably Guinness premiership). Has a couple of S14 games under the belt and as Flip will be 3 years more experienced come 2012.

Centres – Here we might have a problem. Pretorius to end his career next year and maybe Dippenaar makes the step-up, if not we’ll need to buy here.

If meisiekind leaves, JLP will take his place, get some depth if neccessary.

Fullback – Zane is not that young so might need to invest in someone, maybe a great coup by getting Frans steyn in 2012? Who knows.

  • 29

    #27 and #28,

GBS what you forget is that the Bulls might fall into the same trap the Stormers have for the last couple of years…

Very able players at this level, but not enough experience…

The reason the Stormers are winning games this year they used to lose in previous ones, is simply down to the increased collective experience of the team.

No-one knows this better than an ex-WP coach too who strangely enough, finds himself in the Bulls setup at the moment… 😉

GBS- Juandre Kruger is coming back this year already to play currie cup. So langbek kan stay where he is. He will never be a loyal bull in anycase.
