Australian referee Paul Marks has been removed from the Super 14 officials panel following his handling of the Waratahs vs Sharks match last weekend.Β Β Β  South African referee Pro Legoete has also been stood down indefinitely.

SANZAR referees chief Lyndon Bray has also admitted that a penalty try should have been awarded to the South Africans but the result of the match will not change. .

Sharks coach John Plumtree had plenty to say about Lawrence’s performance following the match which the Sharks lost 25-21to the Waratahs at the Sydney Football Stadium after Kurtley Beale knocked down a pass to Ryan Kankowski.

One can never know if the pass to Terblanche would have been caught by Kankowski who was waiting on the wing as passes frequently go to ground in situations like the one in the match. Referee Paul Marks was at the time not convinced that a try would have been scored and only gave Beale a yellow card.

Beale insists that he was trying to intercept the pass and that had he caught the pass a try would have been scored the other way. matches

The referees’ selection panel of Australian Andrew Cole, South Africa’s Tappe Henning and New Zealand’s Colin Hawke have now reviewed Marks’s performances in his past two matches and have voted to drop him from the Super 14 panel until he has rectified shortcomings in his game management.

South African referee Pro Legoete has also been stood down indefinitely.

“There was some imbalance from a management perspective, how he (Marks) arrived at these big decisions and how they were presented,” Bray told the Australian and added that Marks’s decision not to award the Sharks a match-winning penalty try was only one event and his overall handling of the game was taken into account..

“In fairness to Paul, you could debate the penalty try ruling all day,” Bray said.

“We believe the right decision in the cold light of day was to award a penalty try, but you could argue why a referee would back off it.”

Referees’ selection panel member Andrew Cole also maintained that front-on video footage had shown that contrary to South African claims Kankowski would have had an unimpeded run to the tryline, Waratahs centre Tom Carter was coming across in cover defence.

“Admittedly he had a fair bit of work to do, and we all know how quick Kankowski is,” Cole said.

“But Paul would have seen him in his peripheral vision . . . he would have known there was a defender there.”

Cole will now work with Marks on improving his game management and is confident he will be back refereeing at the top level before the end of the Super 14 tournament.

Of course the result wont change , it never does and teams lose huge money etc with poor refereeing

the sharks lost 2 to 3 games this year because of a ref

meaning they could have had anther 10 points atleast and been right up there

di i believe they have played well enough to be right up there no , but that does not mean they deserve to be cheated out of that place

WOw, is this story true?!? If so, finally we get some recognition after enduring bad calls, of which both of these stood chief….just suspect how Brown-nose got away, kiwi refs hardly ever get brought to book…only ‘Walshie’ whom they fired, but that was for being a drunk, and not useless officiating, and there have been quite a few kiwis over the years too.

  • 3

BTW, has mr. Cole ever seen how Kanko side steps the cover defenders….not that Tom Carter would have come close, he had a long way to make.

  • 4

Well there you go. It wont bring us back the win but at least something has been done about it. Is that why we have a Reserve panel ref this Saturday? Has he been give a rise to the Merit Refs cause these two have dropped out?

What about Brown in our first game against the Chiefs? He too was out of his depth. Not as much as Marks but almost as bad.

    Just bring back neutral refs.

1 – Sharky, I said on Saturday here that maybe refs should be cited and if the call was wrong and it cost us points. We should get those points back. Maybe that will stop this bad reffing. What about the TMO???? He had access to that replay of the try he gave the Tahs just before halftime. That was never a try it was never even grounded and never even went over the try line. NOW he could have a good look not like a ref that could get it wrong as he has a split second to look but a TMO should never ever get it wrong. He too must be dropped.

  • 6

Puma i told you so, but the hard thing is the points are down the drain. Think that in the first Sharks game that ref was also sent back to school for a week. Not sure about it but i recall something like that.

  • 7

This have you Tjarks up in arms hey…

Well for what it’s worth…I understand.

Felt the same way when L.Manuels screwed us back then in that Hurricanes game…as TMO

    Another official red carded.
Watch the press , soon one will see a ref being sued over big money lost. Griquas was robbed of R1M two years back, money and careers are lost.

Dubai – Daryl Harper will have no role during the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, even though the Australian is one of world cricket’s elite umpires.
The ICC, cricket’s global governing body, said the experienced Harper had been omitted after an expert panel concluded his “general performance” did not merit selection for the event.

However, in a statement issued from their Dubai headquarters on Tuesday, the ICC “categorically stated” Harper had not been dropped because of his controversial role during the fourth Test between South Africa and England in Johannesburg in January.

Harper stunned England by deciding to give South Africa captain Graeme Smith not out caught behind on review in an innings where the opening batsman went on to make a century that led the Proteas to a series-levelling victory.

The subsequent controversy saw Harper and broadcasters accuse one another of making mistakes in ensuring the technology needed to operate the decision review system was working properly.

In a real “professional” world …medical officers in wich ever capacity have insurance against a screw up…

Fact is…a balls-up by a referee has implications, sometimes of significant effect…

Makes you wonder how professional it realy is…

Maybe refs should take out insurance aswell… πŸ˜†

There is nothing the Sharks can do about it now, but hopefully this will show the SANZAR refs how wrong they were with the decision to stop using neutral refs.

  • 11

    Dis waar super…

    My vraag is dit…

TV sal moet dinge duideliker maak.

Kan actually a “nice article” daaroor skryf…

As a supporter of the NO PENALTY TRY on the weekend, I don’t have a problem with the relegation of the ref as I am a believer that all S14 matches should be officiated by neutral referees. The game is supposedly professional, so SANZAR has to be as professional in their decision-making as we expect the players to be. Coincidentally, I met with two of the Waratahs players yesterday in Dean Mumm and Will Caldwell. I asked their opinions, even though they were bebeficiaries of the decision and they agreed with the posit that Carter was appearing in cover defence and that the quality of the pass/catch was still to be determined, they also believe that Beale was making an attempt at intercept. As I say, they have a vested interest.
With hand on heart, I can say that if the decision had been reversed and the Tahs were in the position of the Sharks and lost the game due to a controversial ref decision, I would say they only had themselves to blame. Both sides played poorly, with wasted opportunities to score points during the 80 mins. I won’t criticise the visiting team for their game, but I will say I was very disappointed by the Tahs rubbish game; ball retention from kick offs was a sham (I asked Mumm and Caldwell yesterday if they wanted me to show them how to catch the ball from the kick off – they were not impressed at that!)

Let’s hope this weekend’s matches are better, with less controversy and more quality from the players and coaches.

Removing sub standard refs… long overdue. Especially Pro Legoete. Sharks were very unlucky not to win that match. The hard thing is the points are down the drain. These things happen and Sharkies need to move on. I can’t help but to remember Linston Manuels call in 2006 Bulls vs Hurricanes.

  • 18

    Old Griquas 14 in Sydney,
Thats so true, if the decision went the Sharks way the outcry would have been by the Tahs. To close this subject, i think something good will come out of this. Maybe not the way the Sharks want it, but to the benefit of all the teams. The refs will be much more circumspect now.

  • 19

The problem here for me is that the Sharks seem to be blaming the Ref’s for their losses. Granted they have had one or two decisions go against them but their biggest problem has been rotation in the front row, poor balance of loose forwards, no fly half, no 12 centre, a poor boring kicking game and a lack of discipline. Fix these problems and the games will start going your way.

  • 20

Look if this happened to the Bulls or the Cheetahs we would have cried fowl too. But the coaching of Plumtree does not inspire me, and it seems the Sharks team too.

So maybe it is better to get to the core of the problem. So in a harsh sense the truth will now be faced, the can of worms opened? I just think the renewal of Plums contract could have waited till the end of this season.

  • 21

20@ SuperBul – you say they cried “fowl”…. hehehehe, soos wat het hulle geklink, soos ‘n hoenertjie??

Jy bedoel seker they cried “foul”

  • 22

There are bad refs everywhere, admittedly some worse than others. But no one country or team has the right to claim absolute martyrdom in the “we was robbed” stakes. From a NZ perspective, forgetting even about the dreaded Wayne Barnes, I recall Marius Jonker making a pigs ear of a match in Melbourne & yellow carding Carl Hayman who even the Convict commentators all agreed had done nothing wrong – so neutral referee & still a really poor outcome ! So, here is a question for everyone.

Come the S14 Semis & Final would you prefer a “neutral” referee or the “best qualified” referee to manage the game ?

Personally speaking I would be okay with Kaplan officiating a final between Saders & Chiefs … CALM DOWN I WAS JUST KIDDING … but a girl can dream πŸ˜‰ Of course I meant Saders & Bulls. I would expect that he would be able assisted by 2 linesmen (or whatever they are called this week) & a TMO who collectively make up the top 4 SANZAR refs.

😯 You would be happy with a Chiefs v Saders final too ? Well yay !! I will break out the champers πŸ˜‰

  • 27

Referees are paid just like players and should be treated just like players. Sure players make faults and you do not drop them immidiately, but if they mess up regularly the get dropped for a better player.

Same to referees. There should be a panel of referee selecters picking the best refs on a continious bases. Being dropped carries no shame, there is just a better ref available right now according to the selectors. And if a ref mess up, he mess up. Just a players would, no hard feelings.

  • 28

#26 R-P, we will be most happy with a Bulls-Stormers Final!!!

Let’s break open the mampoer! πŸ˜€
