    Mapoe worth R1.4m to Bulls

Bloemfontein – Lionel Mapoe may soon be on his way to the Blue Bulls due to a salary dispute with the Free State Rugby Union (FSRU).

The FSRU’s legal representatives will meet with Mapoe’s on Thursday. The meeting may determine whether Mapoe’s contract is valid or whether he can be contracted by the Bulls for a salary of R1.4 million straight away.

Sport24’s sources indicate that Mapoe is earning around R29 500 per month in the Super 14, which is the minimum salary for a South African player in the Super 14. His contract with Free State is worth about R200 000 a year.

Mapoe was contracted as an unknown emerging talent by the Cheetahs in 2008 for R80 000 a year for three years, with annual increases built into the contract.

He still played for the Free State under-21 side in 2009 and only made his mark for the senior team later in the season, after which the Cheetahs decided to increase his salary.

The Cheetahs are now believed to be willing to increase his salary to R750 000 a year within 24 months if he’s prepared to extend his contract until 2012.

Mapoe’s representatives believe that his current salary is not market related.

FSRU president Harold Verster confirmed to Sport24 that he had received a lawyer’s letter from the agents in which the validity of Mapoe’s contract is disputed.

“There is an issue around Mapoe’s contract. His agent, Red Star Talent and more specifically Mike de Haast, is looking at the issue with lawyers. The matter is sub judice because there are ongoing negotiations between the lawyers and we have a meeting on Thursday,” said Verster.

“You can probably always go looking for a problem in a contract. We are quite certain our affairs are in order.

“It’s a pity that this kind of thing always pops up before we play a big South African team. It’s disruptive for the team and players. It’s a pity that our own people in Bloemfontein disrupt our team at such a crucial time.”

Verster believes Mapoe is a star and the Cheetahs would like to keep him in the long term.

“We have looked after him very well to date. He did not have a medical aid last year when he suffered a knee injury. His agents did not arrange a medical aid for him. Free State Rugby paid R25 000 for his knee operation,” said Verster.

“He has also had free accommodation for the past two years at the Cheetah house.”

De Haast says that the Bulls have not made Mapoe an offer.

“Lionel is committed to the Cheetahs and is looking forward to Saturday’s match against the Stormers,” he said.

    Hallo Blouste

  • 8

    Waar daar ‘n rokie is…is daar ‘n vuurtjie !!!

  • 9

    Hi Karen

    Interessante bespiegelinge hierbo of hoe?

  • 10

Baie interesant. Hoekom nou skielik sy salaris wil verhoog – dis ook dalk van die rede hoekom die ouens by die Cheetahs weggaan. Maar hulle is seker bly hulle is ontslae van die du Plessis broers

  • 11

Ok lekker dag – ek moet my tip gaan verdien.

  • 12

Blouste voor ek jou tip gekry het het ek begin werk om daai berig te plaas, maar dankie ou maat hou ons op die tone. Maar glo jy die storie of is dit weer n agent met n eie agenda? Kyk my posts onder daardie berig.

    1. GBS, Their are others too, Highlanders, Crusaders, Force 😉 Why Sharks and Canes wait so long have not a clue 🙄

  • 14

So The canes have changed 5 including Weepu, Smith and the prop Jacob Ellison, seems they’re waving the white flag, surprised Soialo didn’t get the chop, he looks like an old Lion.

  • 15

14 – ManlyBok, not sure if I have ever asked you this before. Do you live in Manly? If you do it is a fantastic place.

  • 16

    Hey Puma, yes I do.

  • 17

16 – ManlyBok, It is a beautiful place to live. Been there once on holiday.

  • 18

ManlyBok, See you a Stormer supporter, so maybe before you left SA you might have lived in Cape Town. (not sure) If you did, how you compare living in Manly to Cape Town?

  • 19

Yes, and I use the facilities, mountain bike and kayak and all very accessible, but it is becoming more and more popular as Bondi becomes more seedy.

What you say boet, Sharks due a win, jeez there were some bad passes thrown at the death in the last game.

  • 20

I loved Cape Town and lived there quite a while, but am actually a Border boy, I have always been a Border/Stormer supporter, but I dont shout about Border much for obvious reasons, hehe.

It’s very civilized here, but you sometimes miss the wild of S.A.My favourite cities in the world are Sydney, Cape Town and San Francisco.

  • 21

19 – ManlyBok, To be honest I never thought much about Bondi beach. Not sure what all the fuss was about. Camps Bay beats it hands down. So does Manly. Manly I thought was a fantastic place.

Not so sure about my Sharks really. I think Landers are a better team than most give them credit for. I know Stormers gave them a hiding but they also came back against the Saders from 0/17 down and beat, Cheetahs. Got 35 points against a powerful Bull side. So yes, I am having my doubts about my Sharkies. They really should have been 4 from 5 if some of the calls went our way. Then you have to never allow that to come into it. Sharks should be getting tries and we not really.

I have a feeling we will go 0/6 down this weekend. Don’t really want to feel like that but Sharks just not playing well. Hope though this is the weekend we wake up and play to our potential.

  • 22

20 – Manyly, I have been to all 3. For me Cape Town is the best, then Sydney. Was not too sure how I felt about San Francisco. I was working in the middle east when I went there on holiday. Met some Americans in Saudi and they kept saying San Francisco was by far better than Cape Town. So maybe my expectations that time was high. Seeing it was a bit let down. It is a nice place but think Cape Town and Sydney far nicer.

I drove from SAn Francisco all the way down to LA. Now that was a brilliant trip to take, must say. Some great beauty to see on that drive. Was not too keen on LA either but good to have seen it.

Italy is a beauty too. One of my favourite countries to visit.

  • 23

Yep, flyhalf is still a problem and I’ve never been a fan of your Bok centre, but we need the Sharks to knock over a few foreigners

  • 24

22 – Sorry, typo again. 😯 meant Manly.

  • 25

Yeah, agreed, L.A. is a hovel, but agreed, no place more beautiful than Cape Town also the cricket and rugbyfields are unmatched for settings.

  • 26

23 – Manly actually I don’t rate any of our centres. Adi can be up somedays and play superb then not really do much.

I think, we miss Frans Steyn this year. Big time. Also since Butch left we never really had a good FH. Well in Freddie we did but he played mostly the CC and Hernandez only a few CC games. So no FH really since Butchie left.

  • 27

Yeah I was and am a big Butch fan, and yes you do miss Frans Steyn big time.

  • 28

25 – Manyly, Agree. I love Cape Town. Though have not been for about 6 years now. My sister and brother live there so it is time for a visit. I have been going back and forward from Joburg to Umhlanga. Much prefer Umhlanga and hoping from next month to be there for good.

Also thinking of spending 6 months in Europe and the other 6 months in Umhlanga. Still thinking about it. Sell my Joburg home first. Maybe after the soccer wc put this home on the market.

Would love to have gone to Australia just that it is so far from Europe where I do visit almost every year. Except this and last year.

  • 29

27 – Manly, there is our problem. No good inside centre and really no good FH.

We have some exciting youngsters too that are not being played. Daft if you ask me. Lambie is such a exciting talented player. Playes centre or FB. He could also slot into FH. Then we have Mvovo who plays on the wing. I would play him there instead of Odwa. We also have Zuks at home and he also plays centre. Time for some change I think. Try out the youngsters this year. We have nothing to lose. We are a goner in this tourney. Though would love our team to beat the Canes just to help out the Stormers and Bulls. Even if Canes lose to Bulls this week. They will make a come back. All the kiwi sides do. They have a never say die atitude and just keep coming back. Last year after the first 3 rounds or 4 rounds Saders were no where nor were the Chiefs. Chiefs eventually were in the final and Saders made the semi. So if Sharks can beat the Canes that just may make it harder for them. I hardly see us doing it but just hope we can next week.

Reds are a sure surprise this year. They looking very sharp.

Don’t tell me those Bulls are raiding the Staat again!
