The South African Rugby Union (Saru) are not planning any action against Stormers captain Schalk Burger after the Springbok flanker struck referee Mark Lawrence lightly on the arm in Saturday’s Super 14 match at Newlands.

The incident came after Lawrence had intervened in a scuffle between Burger and Highlanders captain Jimmy Cowan.

Saru communications chief Andy Colquhoun told Sport24 that Saru referees boss André Watson had reviewed the incident and also spoken to Lawrence about it. He decided then that there would not be further action.

“If there are any real incidents of players manhandling referees, we will view it in a very serious light,” Colquhoun said on Watson’s behalf.

Lawrence already said on Sunday that there was nothing in the Burger incident.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee emphasised on Monday that it had been an accident.

“I think Schalk was hit by Cowan and for him it was like another Highlander joining in. There was no malice or intent,” said Coetzee.

“It was just a reaction and he probably got a huge fright when he saw it was the referee. Mark also saw it in that light.”

  • 46

Flok daai ref het my afgepis…my baie superbru punte gekos.

  • 47

46 – Blouste, Net jou superbru gekos? Huh?

    Het my span gekos. 🙁

Now did I get the afrikaans right there 😀

My bru is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. So just going to take chances now. Pick ones I think could make a upset 😀

48 – Yip, Going to take some chances now. Actually was going to go with the Reds against the Chiefs. Had to think long and hard about that one. Thought Sharks lost by one point to them, Lions almost came back to beat them and then they played a poor Force. Only that it was home turf so went with the Chiefs and messed up. Also wanted to go with the Cheetahs. Then changed that on the last moment too. Just had a feeling the Cheetahs could do it.

Now will just not think too much about it and put in my picks.

You know looking at the youtube clip there of Burger, I have to say if it was a overseas ref he could have been in trouble. Thank goodness it was Lawrence and he knew it was nothing really.

Back in half hour going to eat dinner now.

  • 53

Lawrence is a bit of a Mutai fighter, and burger would have gotten a hiding if he connected a bit harder.

  • 54

It was not nothing, he loked at him and slapped him on the shoulder. Schalk is using up all his 9 lives. He can be very lucky nothing was done. He is turning into a class-a idiot old schalk.

  • 55

Lawrence isnt doff, he knew Burger thought it was someone else and it wasnt intentional, plus Lawrence has a very nice bum

Was just thinking about this situation about players and coaches opening their mouths aboout the refs, i remember not so long ago people wanted the coaches and players to say something and now when the do its a matter of dammed it you do and dammed if you dont.

I think they should speak out, wish someone would asked what the wink was all about. That would be interesting.

  • 57

What’s the wink all about? 🙂

  • 58

Another thing, Burger has started the season with flying coulours anybody think that it might have anything to do with our favorite puker not being there.

Stormers seem to have a good vibe about them and Becker who i never really liked seems to be enjoying his rugby and makeing his presence felt on the field.

  • 59

Hi rugybal, a man winking at another man on a rugby field of all places 🙄

But seriously, home ref winking at home team after blowing the whistle at the opposition.:???:

Hi Treehugger Did Bakkies play on the weekend? Who winked at who. I missed it. At least it wasn’t a peck on the cheeck
