Time to pick this weekends best performing players.  No player from The Stormers appeared on the field because they had a deserved rest week, so a lot of changes to last weeks team must be made. En myne is:
Zane Kirchner- best game in a Bulls jumper/Lambie and Riaan Viljoen did nothing wrong
Wigan Pekeur- always looking for work- tried hard in a losing team.
Robert Ebersohn- best of the lot in a position where we are thin at the moment
Wynand Olivier- playing pattern rugby for Bulls as ball carrier- best on show
Francois Hougard- looked for work and brings a new ‘scrummie’ dimension to 11 play
Morne Steyn- not best day with boot, but still best 10 by far
FdP- in a class of his own
Spies- good with ball in hand
Dewald Potgieter- another impressive all-round performance
Jaques Botes- his best game this year
Flip van der Merwe- only got 20 minutes but showed enough to pip the rest
    Victor Matfield- hugely influential
Werner Kruger- maturing nicely, busy in tightloose
Bismark du Plessis- like a dynamo
Gurthro Steenkamp/John Smit- Gurthro for his complete game, but Smit was solid as well.

    OK, die span…

    15. Patrick Lambie
    14. Basson (Net omdat hy altyd opgevolg het)
    13. Niemand nie…
    12. Riaan Swanepoel
    11. Niemand nie…
    10. Niemand nie…
    9. Niemand nie…
    8. Pierre Spies
    7. Derrick Minnie
    6. Kobus Grobbelaar (Het wragtig alles probeer)
    5. Victor Matfield
    4. Niemand nie…
    3. WP Nel
    2. Hannes Franklin
    1. Guthro Steenkamp (Harder gewerk as enigeen in die Bulls span)

  • 5

Saint daai is n nothing span, wat help dit my, ek moet nou namens jou name soek, maak die ding eenvoudig man.

  • 6

Ok, maar ek doen dit onder protes… 🙂

    15. Patrick Lambie
    14. Basson
    13. Walter Venter
    12. Riaan Swanepoel
    11. Francois Hougaard
    10. Morne Steyn
    9. Fourie du Preez
    8. Pierre Spies
    7. Derrick Minnie
    6. Cobus Grobbelaar
    5. Victor Matfield
    4. Barend Pieterse (Ek weet hy was flank, maar eintlik is hy ‘n slot, ‘n moer goeie een)
    3. WP Nel
    2. Hannes Franklin
    1. Guthro Steenkamp

    9. Ruan Pienaar
    8. Pierre Spies
    7. Dewald Potgieter
    6. Jacques Botes
    5. Victor Matfield
    4. Nico Luus, as Flip net 30 minute gespeel het was dit hy
    3. Werner Kruger
    2. Bismarck du Plessis

hehehehehehe… You Blou Bully boys have your blou sunglasses on….hahaha. 🙄

Plenty more Sharks in that team this week 😛

Okay will be back later to correct some of your choices up there 🙄

Die hare storie sien ek so , daai hare is sigbaar want die man daaronder speel skitterend.

Waar is my konsentrasie. 😆

Kyk ek het Dewalt so gekyk, Saterdag, die man lyk wild, my ma sou as sy sy ouma was hom gas gegee het oor sy hare.

Toevalig sien ek n artikel deur vroeer vandag op Rugby Heaven Australia, “We must promote the characters in our game” by
    ADAM FREIER

    Lees dit gerus.

    Team of the week:

    15. Zane Kirshner with young Patrick Lambie not far behind
    14. Bjorn Basson
    6. Jacques Botes – Beste game van hom in jarrrrrrre!
    5. Victor Matfield
    4. Flip van der Merwe… al het hy as plaasvervanger opgekom, die man gaan nog groot spore trap in SA Rugby.
    3. Werner Kruger
    2. Gary Botha – Gary was vir my steeds beter as Bissy alhoewel Bissy een van sy beter en meer gedisiplineerde dae beleef het

WO plays to the teams game plan, and does it well, a most loyal player in that backline. I said a few times during the game on Saturday i wish they skip him for a bit of variation. The fact is he recycle so well there is the feeling in the team that he will keep the phases going. And he does.

That is what the coaching staff ask from him, sometimes he breaks clean trough and scores easily, all the other times he keeps the ball.

On the Flippie vd Merwe case, he is bloody good, if he stays happy with the way we use him he will have a long career at the Bulls, i would play him in the starting team next week and move DR to the bench.

Ruan was focussed from the start, i dont want to give him too much advice but he must direct the traffic more like FdP does. I saw him a few times Saturday trying to clean out a player with a forward watching him. He must order that forward to do it so that he can scan the field ala FdP. One thing he must not do is to get involved with ref arguing the way Fourie does. FdP must calm down a bit with his ref coaching, thats my feel.

    superBul 13
I agree about FdP’s refcoaching. I get so upset when the ball lies underneath the hindmost feet and we don’t play it. How many times haven’t we seen opposition players coming around and playing it just as it is ruled “out” and being allowed to get away with it. Or worse even, being rucked off the ball by them.

Wynand is playing to instructions. I think he is brilliant this year. I would just like to see us being less frenetic and rushed on attack. Playing a high intensity game doesn’t mean you have to rush things. We need to be clinical and hold onto those passes that are currently being dropped. Most of the tries scored against us were from those spilt passes, not bad defence.

“Little Lambie” appears to be making people sit up and take notice this week….

  • 17

    Lazy Sunday afternoon…..Tra La La…

  • 18

It’s all very good and well to compare players based on stats, but it can never be absolute.
Firstly, problem is, you can never make allowance for everything. Firstly, take Ruggastats for instance- it doesn’t make any provision for actual time on the field, so the oke that plays 20 minutes is treated the same as the oke that played 80 minutes.

Secondly, take defence for instance- There are two ways of defending.
    1. To stick on or around the gainline in the high traffic areas and wait for carriers to run at you, or
    2. Attack the ball carriers as far on their side of the gainline as possible.

Thirdly, each coach has set ideas about how he wants to apply certain players in certain positions to suit the gameplan and the players skills set best.

Fourthly, different teams match up differently to one another and have an influence on how they choose to play.

And finally, external factors like weather, location, specific tactics and even the team make-up of the opposition can influence positional performance by players, like one guy being tasked to neutralize a specific opposition player.

So whatever is said, it should actually work the other way around. The stats should be used to qualify rather than define a player’s performance with reference to all the above factors and more..

    15. Lambie, wtf do people see in Kitchner?
    14. Pekeur
    13. Venter
    12. Swanepoel
    11. Hougaard
    10. Steyn
    9. FDP
    8. Spis
    7. Minnie
    6. Botes
    5. Victor Matfield
    4. Flippie, he is the successor to Bakkies
    3. WP Nel
    2. du Plessis
    1. Steenkamp

  • 20

I see that Bakkies is in France, i hope the Bulls tied up VD Merwe for a few years. Bakkies might be leaving sooner than later.

  • 21

  • 22

GG i wont mind new faces, as long as it is not a total clean out, up to 5 new faces in the settled Bok squad will probably be a good thing.

That how it is suppose to be, the old guys must be pushed hard or out.

There is various sites picking teams, some based in Australia others in NZ. So lets keep this a local S14 team of the week, but i am open to new suggestions. We will try and improve. After all its for the fun of it.

  • 23

For the first time I believe it is impossible to pick a ‘form’ SA team, cause in too many positions players were absolutely shocking.

In my books, about 8 players at best impressed.

    1. Guthro
    2. Bismarck
    3. Kruger
    4. #@^%(&*!^%#(
    5. @&$%&@$&&@^&
    6. Botes
    7. Minnie
    8. Spies
    9. Ruan
    10. #%*&@%*()@)
    11. Hougaard
    12. Swanepoel (he attacked the advantage line beautifully for me)
    13. #%&*@%$&@&^%
    14. #%&^*(#^&*(@
    15. Lambie

  • 24

Superbul- VD Merwe will be at the bulls for the longhaul. Read his interview on the Bulls site a couple of months back. I think he signed until 2012. It is quite strange that he achieved nothing when playing for hte cheatahs and now all of a sudden he is linked to taking over from the best enforcer in the business.

I too think he should start ahead of danie, danie always plays his best when coming on with 30minutes left.

And to all the bad press – The bulls won, they played damn impressive rugby and the 1st 20 minutes took the wind out of the force’s sails in the last 20 minutes. I believe they should’ve been carded in the 1st 20 minutes already as they were infringing with frightening regularity and were very lucky not to have played with 13 at one stage.

  • 25

Spies attacked the line kike a guided missile! Very impressive, even more impressive that the Force brough him down, albeit with about 3 defenders hanging on for dear life.

  • 26

    Morne that
I cannot agree with your assessment that players were absolutely shocking in certain positions.

What in effect you are saying is that we should be very worried so close to the Trinations that the best lock in the world in Victor Matfield, plus the next best six fit contenders barring Andries Bekker, who is actually Matfield’s understudy at international level, were so bad that you could not/were not prepared to make a choice between them.

Likewise 4 of the 5 top flyhalfs in the country and all the wings that are currently international contenders.

Are we really in such strife? I say no- these okes might not have been at the peak of their prowess, but they still competed favourably against top international players, and Morne Steyn might not have had his usual 90 % kicking performance, but still acquited himself well in all other facets of the game.

Fact is, of the 4 SA teams that played, 2 actually won their games and the other two were actually both competitive for a change.

  • 27

So we have to pick the best of the worse as our ‘form’ player for the week?

Morne & Naas were both shocking, so too Carlos and Goode.

Of the lot, Morne was the best of the worst but does that qualify as the SA form flyhalf for week 7 given that he was arguably the 4th worst of all teams the week?

Guys like Hougaard for instance did nothing special, in fact he was average, he got picked.

I can stomach picking average guys if an average performance equates to the best SA had on offer, but where guys had absolute shockers, sorry mate.

IN effect what you are saying is that if guys like Victor or Morne played to 50% of their potential, or worse, they can still be picked as the ‘form’ players in SA?

Sort of defies the purpose of a ‘form 15’ then dont you think?

  • 28

Only guys that deserve a mention in a form 15 is:

    Guthro
    Bismarck (with Gary)
    Botes
    Minnie
    Spies
    Ruan.

The rest I included a bunch of average performers for the weekend and the rest, I simply could not identify ‘form’ to put them in a ‘form’ 15.

  • 29

Morne i agree with Bluebeard, even if Morne played at 50% like you said and he was the best of the lot at display , he must get the vote.
I know this is the first time i ran a team of the week thing, i learn a lot but lets try it and learn. Give me advice if you think we can improve it.

I see Sport 24 gives picks a team of the week and adds their votes up for a team of the year or something like that. Funny enough we differ by 2 at most from their team. And i think many more people vote there.
