Rugby’s governing body will pay $2 million (Euro 1.5 million) so Argentina can play in the Tri-Nations from 2012.
International Rugby Board chairman Bernard Lapasset says from a sports forum the one-off payment removes the final obstacle keeping the Pumas from joining the championship, which features New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
The IRB council just has to confirm the deal at a meeting next month, Lapasset says.
“It is done,” said Lapasset at the Global Sports Forum in Barcelona.
“The principle is to support the cost of the introduction of Argentina into the Tri Nations.”
“It will be a one-off payment of around US Dollars 2 million. The principle is agreed, and we just need the IRB Council to confirm at the next meeting (scheduled for May 12).
“It will be done so Argentina can enter in 2012.”
“We have an agreement with South Africa, New Zealand and Australia for the financial programme that is now in place, and the three existing nations are supportive.”
Argentina finished third at the 2007 Rugby World Cup but has wanted regular matches against highly ranked opposition as it is geographically stranded on the international rugby map.
This is long overdue, but I’m glad it is finally happening….
Hope there best players will be available.

Gary Botha was named Bumble Bee by the Vodacom Bulls management for his efforts against the Waratahs in the Vodacom Super 14 match at Loftus Versfeld a week ago.
This award is made by management to the player who showed extraordinary effort during the match.
Botha battled with flu the whole week leading up to the game, still played 65 minutes and made a crucial turnover on the Bulls line as the Waratahs attacked furiously just before the half time whistle.
He also contributed to a good scrumming effort by the pack and a 100% line-out performance by the Bulls.
The Bulls has a week off after the 48-38 win and management only met on Monday to review the match.
Other winners were:
Bison (most cleans): Deon Stegmann (14 in 32 min), Derick Kuün (21 in 52 min).
Sniper (most tackles): Wynand Oliver 18
