Proteas coach Corrie van Zyl is anxiously waiting to hear whether Graeme Smith will be fit for the World Twenty20 tournament to be played in the West Indies in May.

Smith on Monday night broke the middle finger on his right hand when he took a difficult catch to dismiss Virender Sehwag in an Indian Premier League (IPL) game. He will fly home on Wednesday and will miss the rest of the IPL tournament.

Earlier the South African captain, has sustained a finger injury while fielding at the Eden Gardens in the build-up to the second and final Test against India on Sunday.

Smith was hit during practice and Michael Owen-Smith, South Africa’s media manager, said he had strained a ligament on the outside half of the little finger in his left hand. “He had an x-ray on the little finger of his left hand, it shows no fracture at all. We are having MRI scan this afternoon just to be 100% certain of what the injury is. It is obviously some sort of ligament damage, so it is just to establish if it is that. At this stage it has been treated as a sprained ligament.”

Though an x-ray taken at the ground ruled out a fracture, an MRI scan later in the day showed up ligament damage, with considerable swelling around the injury.

The medical team is however confident that the swelling will subside in the next 24 hours and Smith will put his finger to the test at Saturday’s practice at Eden Gardens after which a decision will be taken on his fitness to play in the second Test.

Over the last 20 months Smith has had long-standing injury problems. He first suffered a tennis elbow injury during the IPL in India in April 2008 and that forced him to miss the last three ODIs against England the same year. He later broke his hand while facing Australia’s Mitchell Johnson in the third Test in Sydney.

In the 3rd Test against Australia South Africa reached 125 for one by the close but also lost their captain, Graeme Smith, for the remainder of the match with a fractured hand, courtesy of a Johnson bouncer. Already in severe pain with tennis elbow and due to return home after the Test, Smith seemed intent on leaving a lasting impression and hit five boundaries to reach 30 from 31 balls before Johnson struck.

Smith bravely batted in the second innings to try and save the game. He missed the subsequent ODI series and decided to delay the surgery on  his injured tennis elbow until after the return series against the Australians at home last year.

I would not like to see this mans hands after retirement. As a kid i knew a old man Vermaak who was a welder/boiler maker. This old man did not have one straight finger, they were broken so many times they were pointing in all directions. Hard farm life, but with those crooked hand he kept working in the farm until he died at the age of 80.

Another broken finger!! Damn Graeme Smith has broke a lot of fingers since that Oz tour.

Hope that finger is healed by the time May comes. It should be takes about 6 weeks.

  • 3

    Another finger… 😯

He should get “intensive finger defensive techniques” training… 😆

  • 4

Yeah, all the cricket has caught up to him and his body and hands do not have time to recover properly. As much as I love Ipl these guys are playing too much, but when this much money is involved.everybody has there price..

No IPL crici thread, so will just post this here as this thread is about cricket.

Delihi Daredevils have to get 219 to beat the Mumbai Indians.

Now that is going to be very, very tough.

Once again think I have picked the wrong team.. 🙄
Also yesterday being so busy never put my picks in. So think I will be right on the bottom of the bru pool for sure. 🙁

If Sehwag is wagging his tail that score target will be wilted down in quick time.

  • 7

6 – Super, you think so? Jeepers the Mumbai Indians batsman were on fire there. 219 will be hard to chase down. Too much pressure I think.

See you picked the Mumbai team. I have to look to see who is playing in which team. Still don’t really know. Now had a check to see. So from tomorrow will check before doing my picks. Though I think in this game it still could be a gamble. Any team could win.

Going now to watch some of the crici. Back later.

  • 9

DD 42/1 after 4 overs. One wicket down already, going to be just to difficult to chase 219.

  • 10

Puma i started in the IPL and then stopped dead in my tracks, really poor Sbru this for me.

  • 11

No use watching any more of this game. DD have 4 wickets down.

  • 12

Puma they are losing wickets far too quick , they wont make it now.

  • 13

    Talk i will update here

    Mumbai Indians 218/7 (20/20 ov)
    Delhi Daredevils 80/4 (9.0/20 ov)
Delhi Daredevils require another 139 runs with 6 wickets and 11.0 overs

  • 14

12 – Super, think far too much pressure on them from the start. With 10 a over to get from the start that is real pressure.

Now just looked on SuperSport and see DD were on top with 2 out of 2. Mumbai 1 out of 1. So think these two teams look to be the top teams maybe with Kolkata.

Will get to know the teams more as the tourney goes.

You will do well with this win in the bru pool.

So after this game. DD will be 2 wins from 3 games. Not too bad.

The bowlers in the Mumbai team are really good bowlers too. They also have Tendulkar to bat. So will have to really see who is in which team.
