Allister Coetzee, coach of the Vodacom Stormers, on Wednesday announced his team to play the Vodacom Cheetahs at Newlands on Saturday 20 March.
Coetzee made a few changes to the backline, most notably the inclusion of the young Tim Whitehead at inside centre in place of the injured Juan de Jongh
De Jongh injured his elbow in the convincing victory over the Hurricanes the past Saturday and was not considered. Whitehead trained with the Stormers earlier this season and he leapfrogged more experienced campaigners such as Dylan des Fountain and Frikkie Welsh to don the Nr 12 jersey.
Peter Grant thus remains at flyhalf, with Willem de Waal making his first appearance on the substitutes’ bench after playing three games for the Vodacom Cup side. He takes over from Lionel Cronjé, who was not considered.
Exciting utility back Gio Aplon is also back in the starting XV where he replaces Sereli Naqelevuki at right wing.
The main fixture is preceded by a Vodacom Cup curtain raiser between Vodacom WP and the Border Bulldogs. Kick-off for this match is at 14h30.
Tickets are priced between R80 and R95 for seating, with standing room tickets R50. Tickets are currently on sale through Computicket outlets nationwide, online at www.computicket.com or via the Call Centre on 083 915 8000. The Newlands Box Office in Boundary Road will be open from Tuesday till Friday from 9am to 4pm, and on Saturday from 9am until kick-off.

Oh my nerves – jong ek se maar liewers niks nie. Let me start worrying for Saturdays game as I usually do on a Wednesday
Ek sien julle rus Nakelevuki, daai man was sooos n weghol tenk Saterdag. Ek like dit as n speler so comeback maak.
Hoop hy speel darem die hele seisoen so.
Corey Jane was uir soos n kers toe hy hom tref
Lol 🙂
Ja gelukkig was alles legal anders was hy in groot dinges gewees. Kyk al betaal julle my 1 miljoen rand sal ek nie hom probeer tackle nie – no ways
Ok cheers Superbul – lekker aand
Very good team and once again very good continuity in selection.
Gio GifAplontjie has done nothing wrong, so giving him a chance is a good thing. Knock-a-li-vuki has certainly also started playing a decent game lately, so the competition for starting spot is good to see.
Karen thanks for visiting, jy is altyd so aangenaam hier.
Stormers have a formidable team now and their reserves are good too. They must not slip this one though.
stilweg optimisties hier waar ek sit
Smallies julle like mos die groot vis.
Stil Woensdagaand, gaan netnou kyk of iemand hier oor is. Cheers vir eers gaan gou iets anders doen.
Ek sien ou ysterman hendro is in bruss se plek goeie teenvoeter vir schalk
baai super
Hierdie gedagte oor FdP
Ludeke said investment in possible replacements will start soon.
Hope the Lions tied up Jano he or that Coetzee lat from the Pumas might be on the shopping list.
The Bulls can make something out of these average scrummies, develop them into very good scrummies…. hehehehe
“We are still assessing Juan and will make a final call tomorrow,” Fleck said after a closed practice in Bellville on Tuesday. “But if Juan can’t play, we are looking at Tim to come in there. Tim has been training with us this week. He is a special player who has a lot of time on the ball, and he has good distribution skills.
“He would be a perfect fit for us in terms of the way we want to play the game. He was part of the Currie Cup squad so he is familiar with our systems.”
Fleck coached Whitehead, who is 1.88m and weighs 90kg, at UCT during the Varsity Cup for the past two years. The former Grey PE pupil, who will turn 22 in May 2010, played under-21 rugby for WP in 2009 and also made the South African Students team.
So he doesn’t have a lot of senior experience, but Fleck doesn’t think that is a problem.
“It is a big step up for Tim. But he is a good player in the Will Greenwood mould. He is tall and has a high work rate, while he also runs good lines,” he said.
“There is no better environment to bring in a young player than in a team that’s winning. We have also seen how a guy like Juan has prospered with Jaque Fourie next to him and we hope that Tim will have a similar experience.”
It is a bold selection to make, as the “safe option” would have been to play Willem de Waal at flyhalf and move Peter Grant to inside centre, but, as Fleck points out, the “way the Stormers want to play” means that having De Waal at flyhalf would disrupt the flow of the backline.
