Munster announced today that Jean de Villiers will return to South Africa at the end of the current season.

The decision to return home was determined by his desire to make himself available for selection for the South African 2011 World Cup squad, a situation Munster were aware of when they initially contracted de Villiers. De Villiers, who is currently abroad with the Munster squad on a warm-weather camp said, “My decision to return to South Africa is solely determined by a desire to put myself in contention for the Sprinboks RWC 2011 squad.

“I feel this is perhaps my last opportunity to represents my country at the Rugby World Cup and after consultation with SARU it has become clear that to qualify for selection players must be playing their rugby in South Africa in the season leading up to the competition.

” I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here in Munster and I think it would be fair to say that had the RWC not been a factor, then I would be remaining for at least the next 2 seasons. I would not rule out returning here after RWC 2011 either, if the opportunity arose.

“For now though,” he continued,” my entire focus is on the Magners League and Heineken Cup campaigns. There’s a lot of rugby to be played yet in the red shirt and I’m looking forward immensely to continuing my involvment with a great squad.”

Munster Chief Executive Garrett Fitzgerald in announcing the news said, “Jean missed the 2003 World Cup through injury and played just 40 minutes in 2007. So his desire to represent his country in the most prestigious rugby competition is totally understandable.

” Jean made us aware of this scenario before he joined us last September. He has been a hugely positive addition to the squad this season. His influence has grown and continues to grow as he becomes more and more comfortable within the squad.

“While he will be a major loss, we fully respect his ambition and he will leave us at the end of the season with our very best wishes.

22 – Blouste that is a lot of money. Then what does Bulls pay Matfield? Think he must earn the most out of any of the Boks playing for his franchise.

21 – Ash, Yes it would be good and especially for Bok rugby.

33@ Pietman – Dit klink nie sleg nie…

    Sharks nuus…

Gerhard Mostert will miss the rest of the Super 14 while Johann Muller is still in doubt for the Sharks’ clash with the Cheetahs on Friday.

    Tjarks looking thin on lock…

If Cheaters get the upper hand up front this weekend, the Tjarks are toast !!!!

33 – Piet, don’t think JdV will go to Bulls. They have WO there and he is there. JdV wont get enought game time there. Would be a foolish move for him.

Probably go back to WP, if not then see him either at the Sharks playing next to Adi (Also a Bok combination) or going to the Lions. Who ever has enough cash to buy him I think.

    More aan almal hier

    Puma

I doubt if Matield gets more…

The motto at the Bulls is that NO ONE is bigger than the game and the team !!!

Hence the Bulls didn’t equal or better the offer from the weepee for Habana, wich they had first option to do, and could have if they wanted.

Same reason they didn’t take Bissy and sibling.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…

I think weepee made more problems for themselves in sighning these players for these amounts…

Where does it leave a player like say Schalk for example, who were always loyal to Province.

Probably with a bit of a sour taste in his mouth, or did they top up his contract aswell ?

His CV is pretty similar to those of Habs I would say.

And if they are flocking out all this money, is it worth it at the end ?

    superbul @ 48
wat HET van die leeu ondersteuners geword?
waarom is hulle nie meer op dié blog nie?

  • 50

How much milage will weepee get out of Habs for instance…

    S 14 this year
    No CC

    Next year..

Probably just some of the S 14 and thats it…

Look his a great player but me personaly, I don’t think it’s worth it…
Come 2011 WC he will be gone…

That money can be WAY better utilised bringing through younger players or sighning young and up coming stars ( read Mapoe 😆 )

45 – Blouste, read after Matfield left France he had a huge offer from a English club but Bulls step in. So they must have offered him a lot or think it was a sponsor that offered him the extra.

Just read that so how true it is I have no idea. Could be a whole load of nonsense.

Think Bulls will be pleaed they never signed the Dup brothers. They want to come as a package and that is a lot of money.

Also read that Habs wanted to move to Cape Town so think it was the lifestyle there that he wanted. Not sure if Bulls would have kept him there with any amount of money. It was the attraction of living in Cape Town for Habs. Also could just be a rumour but you read all sorts of things. Never know what to believe really.

    India on 500 now.

  • 54

  • 55

Niemand genees mens ooit van Pretoria nie, Pretoria kleef aan mens, Pretoria is in mens gees ingebou…. so Habana sal wel terugkeer… eendag, as hy dan nog belangrik genoeg is vir die Bulle om in belang te stel.

  • 57

54 – Still good money but if Habs is getting 3 million!! think Matfield is worth a lot more.

  • 58

    Puma

Also heard what superBul just said.

Also heard Matfield saying on record that he will be earning far less that he could have and in fact did in Europe…

But measured what was more important in his life and wanted to come back.

Habana was offered approximately halve of what the Stormers offered him according to some ,wich is in line with what Matfield is apparently being payed if you do the maths.

    57
Remember Matfield have a good Springbok contract too, and certainly other smaller endorsements.
