Samoa wins Final 33 – 12 against New Zealand

SA lost to New Zealand 12-5 in the quarter finals

South Africa wins the plate against , can you believe it. At last a win against Fiji.  12 – 7

Sevens maestros Fiji continued their dominance over the Springboks when they won a highly-charged match at the Las Vegas Sevens 12-5 to win Pool B.

The Blitsbokke lost for the fourth time in as many tournaments to the Fijians in this year’s IRB Sevens series, but again will feel desperately unlucky as they made most of the play and had more scoring opportunities.

The Blitsbokke will now face New Zealand in the Cup quarterfinals tonight (SA time) after the latter won Pool A with victories over France, Guyana and Australia

    12 Christian Lealiifano(Brumbies)

    11 Digby Ioane (Reds)

    10 Quade Cooper (Reds)

    9 Will Genia (Reds)

    8 Wycliff Palu (Waratahs)

    7 David Pocock (Force)

    6 James Horwill (Reds)

Player of the round: Will Genia. A spectacular performance by the Test halfback who worried the Waratahs all night and should have been rewarded with a victory.

Try of the round: Wycliff Palu. The No.8 provided the Waratahs with a get-out-of-jail card with a last-minute bustling try.

OPINION: Damn the statistics, it’s the drama that makes for good rugby.

More tries? No. There were 30 tries in the opening weekend of the Super 14, 15 less, believe it or not, than the previous year.

So why was the rugby so much more pleasing to watch?

Quite simply because there was less kicking from hand over the seven matches played. Goodbye AFL, welcome back rugby union. The statistics will point to 51 shots at goal including a record nine by the Hurricanes against the Blues at North Harbour.

If that trend continues, rugby will have tied itself in yet another knot.

However, the penalty count, like the try count, may be misleading. For now at least, it is a line in the sand, a red flag, for those players and coaches who want to slow the ball at the tackle.

One can only hope there will be less penalties in coming weeks as players adjust.

LAW AND ORDER WE MAY be surprised at what will follow the decision to have Super 14 referees give press conferences.

Referees love to talk (have a listen to them during a game). I know this will offend some fans (especially those in Otago who still bridle at the name Colin Hawke), but they’re intelligent and articulate too. They certainly have nothing to fear from media inquisition.

In the 1990s when the brusque South African Andre Watson was in his prime he made a shocking error during a Super 14 game. To my surprise at the time he agreed to discuss the issue with me on Radio Sport.

The programme producer and I laboured over our questions, vowing we wouldn’t be sidetracked by excuses.

Watson came on the line from Sydney. Had he had a chance to see a replay of the incident? “Yah, I did, and I don’t mind telling you it made me sick to the stomach. That was a terrible mistake I made, and all I can do is apologise.”

Oh. Well, thanks for that Andre and enjoy your day.
