The Cheetahs hosted the Bulls tonight in the 1st South African game of the 2010 Super 14 season. This is the match thread for discussion of the game. The game was televised on SuperSport 1 in South Africa. The Bulls bagged full log points, scoring 5 tries and a penalty try in the process, against the Cheetahs 3 very well worked tries.
from the official Bulls website
The Vodacom Bulls kicked off their Vodacom Super 14 campaign in the best possible way by beating the Vodacom Cheetahs 51-34 in Bloemfontein on Friday night. The Bulls scored five tries and was awarded a penalty try as well, securing a bonus point away from home.
The Bulls had to recover the lead three times in the first half after the furious start by the Cheetahs saw them scoring in the opening minute of the game.
The accurate boot of Morné Steyn, who succeeded with eight of his nine attempts at goal, kept the scoreboard ticking along.
A try by Lionel Mapoe rocked the Bulls, but after Jaco Pretorius scored his first Super 14 try for the Bulls, they edged ahead.
Naas Olivier kept his side in the game with the boot, but a well-taken try by Steyn and a penalty shortly thereafter, saw the Bulls comfortably ahead at the break.
Olivier opened the scoring in the second half, but two tries in quick succession by Gerhard van den Heever and Zane Kirchner had the Bulls in command again.
The home side struck back though with two well taken tries of their own to make it a six point game.
The lights at Vodacom Park then tripped, resulting in an eight minute delay to play, but the Bulls recovered best when Wynand Olivier sliced through the defence to score.
A late penalty try after a strong scrum by the Bulls secured a convincing win.
Coach Frans Ludeke was a happy man afterwards.
“We still have areas to work on, but this is a fine win and the bonus point is a good reward for our play. I was impressed by the step-up in the scrums and it is great to see our hard word in that department paying off.”
Captain Victor Matfield warned that other teams will not find the Cheetahs an easy target this year.
“They really came back at us, but we scored some great tries when it mattered. We need to improve in certain areas, but for now, this was a very rewarding win.”
Scores:
Cheetahs: 1 Try Lionel Mapoe, 5 Penalties & 2 Conversion2 Naas Olivier, 1 Try Juan Smith, 1 Try Jonghi Nokwe
Bulls: 3 Penalties & 5 Conversions & 1 Try Morné Steyn, 1 Try Jaco Pretorius, 1 Try Gerhard van den Heever, 1 try Zane Kirchner, 1 Try Wynand Olivier, 1 Penalty Try, 1 Conversion Jacques-Louis Potgieter

My margin was out with the win on my bru but a win is still good.

Those who want to see something nice go watch the updated Super14 log
Updated SBru cant be posted SBru too busy, calculating it
Good display from the Bulls tonight, especially considering they had slow ruck ball.
Everyone seems to disagree but I thought Stegmann had a rather quiet game…in more than one way.
Poor defense from Meyer Bosman, who looked solid on attack and very good distribution, especially to supporting forwards on his inside.
I hope this is the season Gurthro Steenkamp rescue his career – he looks hungry.
286@ willievz – I think it was an all-round performance from the Bulls…. but hell, the Cheetahs played very well too.
Anyway folks, I’m off… have to get up early to do the next batch of match Threads…
See you in the morning!

Well done to the Bulls and all the Bulls supporters!
I was too tired to watch the second half. Just read through the posts and it sounded like it was a crackers of a 2nd half. Well done Bulls. My only Superbru win so far, One can always count on the Bulls. Super rugby is going to be exciting this year.
What a joke! After all the bluster about how much better SH rugby is than in the NH, some of the blowhards on this website must be feeling rather foolish after that ridiculous display of touch rugby. I’m referring to that Rugby Lite game between the Cheetahs and the Bulls which was unfortunately broadcast on Sky this evening. I didn’t see the two earlier games but, judging by the highlights, they were only marginally better.
You chaps can say what you like about NH rugger, at least it’s rugby where the players tackle one another, where forward passes are disallowed and where both sets of front rows don’t pop up after each and every scrum. Oh and here in the NH, we have a supply of electricity that lasts for the whole game and we don’t have to stop games half way through the second half while someone winds up the generator. And you chaps want to host the FIFA World Cup? It really is beyond a joke.
Oh well, lucklily there are two games of real rugger tomorrow. Not sure if I could handle much more of this candy-floss Rugby Lite nonsense.
Come on England!

Ludicrous Bulls
Super 14 | February 25th, 2008
How did a man with three wins in 24 Super rugby matches get the job to coach the 2007 Super 14 champions?
When it all goes to pot for the champions this season – and it will – then those who appointed Frans Ludeke as Bulls coach should resign.
They won’t because that’s not how it works in a professional rugby, but because they won’t it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t.
Even when the Bulls beat the Stormers in Cape Town a fortnight ago it said more about the limitations of the Stormers than it did about sustained momentum from the Bulls, who offered nothing by way of the intensity we saw in their championship-winning campaign.
Ludeke beat off several high profile contenders in being given the Bulls job this season. Players, among them Victor Matfield, said he was the right man because he understood the environment. Matfield, now playing for Toulon, expressed confidence the Bulls would be just fine.
Well they aren’t.
All i can say is HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA
superBul: well done. It was a very good win.
The Bulls were brilliant and are certainly looking the part to be there at the end of the tournament.
I am amazed at how coaches and fans simply do not understand that rugby needs to be played going forward, the shortest route from try line to try line.
The Bulls once again demonstrate that running straight and hard is the first requirement to set up opportunities to score.
The people who keep on about playing expansive rugby and taking the ball wide, simply do not understand that the only time that the ball should go wide is when you have done the hard work going direct in order to set up the advantage of going wide.
You cannot play this game running from touch line to touch line, hoping that the defence will crack.
It will not crack, you have to create the situation as described above to give your backs a chance.
As for my favourite subject the scrumming:
The Bulls front row has improved by 1000%.
Werner Kruger scrummed technically correctly with his legs back and a straight back.
He is no world beater as a tight head, however he was very good last night and with this technical approach he can only get better.
Guthro simply out muscled WP.
He gave him a hiding.
Guthro and Heinke have the problem of scrumming straight up into the air, however they are doing this because they are powerfull enough to do it.
It is destructive and not ideal from a scrumming point of view, however as long as the refs do not blow them, they will continue.
The Cheetahs were taught a lesson.
The Bulls were miles ahead of any other team on show yesterday.

Do you think that Gary Botha helped there, with play and knowledge?
Morning Super.
I cannot say if Gary helped, but as you know the NH scrumming is miles ahead of SH scrumming.
So hopefully he had an influence on getting them to stick to the basics of scrumming.
What I failed to mention is that the Bulls scrummed well as a collective 8 man scrum.
I suspect they prepared very well to take on the Cheetahs in the area that the Cheetahs had been boasting about before the game.
That tells me good things about the mentality in the Bulls camp.
I am always in favour of taking on your opponents at their so called strenghts, if you can, as that breaks them mentally very quickly.
TH you have it spot on. The moment they started boasting and said they want to have a word to the ref about rewarding the superior scrum my hopes went up. That was the worst tactical move they could have tried. You just dont give your opponents that type of motivation.
