Johannesburg, 18 January 2010… The Golden Lions Rugby Union announced this morning that Wikus van Heerden, former Lions captain, has signed with the Lions from 1 July 2010 – 31 October 2012.
Van Heerden, or “Captain Courageous”, as he was commonly referred to, left the Golden Lions Rugby Union at the end of the 2006 Absa Currie Cup competition to join the Vodacom Bulls, and thereafter moved to Saracens. He will remain at Saracens until the end of their season on the 30 June 2010 before moving back to Johannesburg.
Van Heerden commented this morning that he is very excited about returning to the Lions. “Since my time at the Lions I have grown as a player and have gathered much experience at both the Bulls and Saracens. I am hoping to utilize this experience and make an impact when I join the Lions later this year”.
The GLRU are very excited about signing Van Heerden who has spent most of his formative rugby career with the Johannesburg based team.
“It’s always good to sign a new player, but when it’s a former star player returning, it makes it a little more special. Wikus returning is exciting, and we see this as just one more step in the right direction for the GLRU”, CEO Manie Reyneke said.
Of the various unions in South Africa, why the Lions?
Van Heerden said, “The Lions has always been a very special place to me. I spent nine (9) years at the Lions before moving over to the Bulls. At that stage I needed a change. With all the changes at the Lions now and with the new people appointed, this is an exciting and ideal opportunity for me to make the most of what is left of my rugby career. And who knows, maybe I can be a part of a winning Super 14 or Currie Cup team while at the Lions”.
Van Heerden will join the Lions ahead of the 2010 Absa Currie Cup, where he is expected to be a regular in the starting 15.

Another good siging by the Lions. I think the Lions are going to do better than the Stormers this year.
The rugby club were throwing a big party one Saturday night at the clubhouse, and all the players and officials were there with their wives and girlfriends. The club chairman turned up late and found a boisterous game in full swing.
‘Come on, boss,’ urged the team captain.
‘This is fun! We’ve blindfolded all the girls and now they’re trying to identify the men by feeling their private parts!’
‘Disgusting!’ said the chairman. ‘I’m not taking part in a game like that!’
‘You might as well,’ said the skipper. ‘Your name’s been guessed three times already!’
The front-row forward decided to get a tattoo. ‘Any suggestions?’ he said to the tattooist.
‘Do you love your wife?’ he was asked.
‘Of course I do,’ he replied.
‘Well,’ said the tattooist, ‘why not have “I Love You” tattooed on your penis?’
‘Great idea!’ said the rugby man. ‘Let’s go!’
In bed that evening, he threw back the sheets and said to his wife, ‘What do you think of that, Love?’
‘There you go again!’ she said. ‘Always trying to put words in my mouth!’ 😳
lol @ Ashley
Baie goeie ‘signing’ deur die Leeus, jy kort ervaring om die jongmanne te help. Sou hom natuurlik graag daar by die Bulle wou gesien het, maar JHB is darem nie te verrie ! 😉

Watching Sachin Tendulkar bat these days is almost like watching a re-run of one’s favourite TV show. When the innings is over, one is hard-pressed to remember a single stand-out shot; not because there aren’t any but because, having been essayed so many times over 20 years, nothing screams out. That pull, that cover drive, the slog sweep and those punchy drives invoke a sense of familiarity, which in this case, breeds not contempt but respect.
The match situation on Sunday controlled his style. Shakib was trying to trap him lbw but Tendulkar didn’t oblige. He went back, took care not to get the front leg across and played the ball late. Now and then, Shakib would drop his arm rounder or get it higher and try to surprise Tendulkar with a variation in trajectory but didn’t succeed. Time and again, Shakib would slip in the arm-ball and the one that would gently go on with the line outside off stump, Tendulkar played the former with the straightest bat possible and tapped the latter just past silly point.
It’s not that his shots are risk-free, in the conventional sense of the term, but they rarely look cheeky or desperate. Yesterday, occasionally, he played the paddle shot and the slog sweep. When Tendulkar plays them, you realize they aren’t employed for the mere sake of exhibitionism, rather, they come out of an extremely calculating mind. You can predict what he is going to do but somehow you don’t think he can be stopped.
There were two errors yesterday. The second one was borne out of the circumstance. In the company of the tail and needing quick runs, he top-edged a pull but it fell clear. The first one revealed more; it was a bouncing delivery outside off stump and Tendulkar edged his intended punchy back-foot shot but first slip couldn’t hold on to the tough chance.
