    3 – Percy Montgomery

Percy Montgomery is the most decorated Springbok of all-time. He played in 102 Tests for South Africa between 1997 and 2008 and at the time of his retirement held 94 Springbok records including the most capped and top points scorer in South African rugby history.

“Monty” played the majority of his international career at fullback – starting in the No 15 jersey in a Springbok record 87 Tests – but his versatility also saw him play in the midfield, at flyhalf and on the wing.

Montgomery made a try-scoring Springbok debut as an outside centre against the British & Irish Lions in Durban on June 28, 1997 and was nominated for the SA Player of the Year award that same year.

In his seventh international, a 36-32 away win over France in November 1997, Montgomery started in the No 15 Green & Gold jersey for the first time. The following year, he helped South Africa to their first-ever Tri-Nations title and remained the first choice fullback for the 1999 World Cup.

On the end-of-year tour of Europe in 2000, Montgomery was switched to flyhalf but soon reverted to his more familiar position of fullback and, by the end of 2001, he had amassed 50 Springbok caps.

In 2002, Montgomery made a career altering decision by signing for Welsh club Newport Gwent Dragons. As a result, he was ineligible for Springbok selection as a policy put in place by SARU prohibited overseas-based South African players from representing the country.

After a change of policy, Montgomery was recalled to the Springbok squad by coach Jake White in 2004. He took full advantage of the opportunity by playing a key role in South Africa’s triumphant Tri Nations campaign and finished both the 2004 and 2005 Tri-Nations seasons as the competition’s top points scorer.

During the 2007 World Cup in France, Montgomery eclipsed scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen’s long standing record as the most capped Springbok – making his 90th appearance in the pool match against Tonga – and was the leading points scorer of the competition.

Early on the final against England, Montgomery suffered damaged knee ligaments but fought through the pain and slotted four penalties as South Africa clinched their second World Cup title with a 15-6 victory over the defending champions.

Montgomery became the first and only Springbok to date to earn 100 caps when he ran out against archrivals New Zealand at his beloved Newlands on August 16, 2008. He announced his retirement from international rugby two weeks later following a record 53-8 win over the Wallabies at Ellis Park.

In May 2009, he rejoined the Springboks as the team’s kicking coach.

superBul – That was good to run through Percy’s list of achivements – Not just a ‘Pretty Face’.

The nicest gift I have recieved for a while…. 😀 Ag Dankie.!

  • 8

John Smit, the best SA rugby player for almost 20 years. Okay!

  • 9

Must say i have no problem giving him the number 1 spot.

  • 10

9 – Great captain and very commited to the cause. But best bok in 20 years……. Not so sure. Has he ever won SA player of the year?

  • 11

Mark Andrews, Matfield, joost, FDP, Andre Venter, Schalk, Rassie, Jouba. These are but a few players i would rate above John.

  • 12

    En, waar is Earl ?

  • 13

Sjoe, hoe kies ‘n mens nou die beste 15 uit hierdie 50 ? Ek gaan nou probeer.

  • 14

Hier is my beste span wat ek sou kies uit hierdie groep:

    Jouba (Percy)
    Slaptjips (Chester)
    Gerber (JF)
    Japie (JDV)
    Habana
    Naas (Honi-I-shrunk-the-bol)
    FDP (Joost)

    Spies (Gary)
    Andre (Juan)
    Ruben (Francois)
    Vic (Andrews)
    Bakkies (Wiese)

  • 19

18: O so, nou verstaan ek waar Schalk se gebytery vandaan kom ?

  • 22

Pieter Hendricks doesnt deserve to be in this group.
Steve Atherton is unlucky not to be there.

Wheres Schalk Burger? looks like him and John Smit will tie.

Personally I think Naas is in the top 5(should be anyway).

  • 23

I see now Schalkie is there, so it must be John Smit. Schalk should also be in the top 5, if not first…or are we judging leadership skills here!!!!

  • 24

Kobus Wiese….the sesame seed king….not so sure he must be there. Theres not enough locks, we’ve always had good locks

  • 25

Krynauw Otto deserves more respect, he should be further up the list. Andre Snyman didn’t make the cut.

  • 26

Must be John Smit. His name is not on the list. So should be him. Our greatest Bok Captain ever. Yip, it will be John for number one.

  • 27

Pleased Fransie makes that list. Only 20 in the world cup and wins a gold medal.

  • 28

Andre Venter, What a magnificent player he was. Gave 200% all the time.

Pleased Teich made that list too. Should have captained the Boks to the World Cup 1999. We just may have won that one too. Biggest mistake Mallett ever made by dropping him.
