The Sharks are going into a game with may questions to which I am sure they will find some answers after the following to matches being played at Newlands in Cape Town.

The sharks team to face the Western Force in Tuesday night’s warm up match at Newlands stadium has been announced, this match being part of the ” Neo Africa” series sees the full 28 man contingent playing a part in the match for the Sharks.

The strong starting 15 is complimented by a 13 man bench to provide the entire squad with playing opportunity of playing, this will give John Plumtree the opportunity of game time in the middle in a game situation under match conditions.

The team selected has a lot of experience from jersey 1 to 15 with the bench offering even more , and will give John Plumtree even more insight as to condition and form of players that the training ground does not offer.

No doubt the Western Force team will be boosted by more senior players after being soundly beaten by the Stormers last Friday evening, the Stormers having built up a sizable 41-0 lead by half time, after the introduction of around 7 senior players the Force were a far better unit in the 2nd half.

Tuesday night’s match however should not be as lopsided as John Mitchell’s side for the encounter should be vastly different from that of last Friday night’s match against the Stormers, which could see around 7 or 8 changes in the starting line-up.

The Sharks team is as follows:

15 Stefan Terblanche (capt)
14 Luzuko Vulindlu
13 Waylon Murray
12 Riaan Swannepoel
11 Lwazi Mvovo
10 Monty DuMond
09 Rory Cockott
08 Ryan Kankowski
07 Jean Deysel
06 Keegan Daniel
05 Steven Sykes
04 Alistair Hargreaves
03 Jannie Du Plessis
02 Craig Burden
01 Tendai Mtawarira

Reserves:
16 Bismark Du Plessis
17 John Smit
18 Johan Muller
19 Jaques Botes
20 charl Mcleod
21 Andries Strauss
22 Odwa Ndugane
23 Patric Cilliers
24 Willem Alberts
25 Gerhard Mostert
26 Patric Lambie
27 Adrian Jacobs
28 JP Pietersen

Yes good team for sure, not the best starting but very good.

Really looking forward to seeing Vulindlu and Mvovo on the wings. Should add some good pace there. Also going to be good to see Alberts and Mostert when they come on also Lambie. Going to be interesting.

Huge bench!!! Good actually, that is what a warm up game is for to experiment. That is why Force were so daft in just playing their 2nd string side on Saturday. For now they have not really learned much from that game expect they need plenty changes. Should have had a mixture of their best side and 2nd string side to experiment. Pleased Sharks are doing just that. We will probably then play our best side against Stormers. Well maybe, might even experiment there too. These games are mostly to get ready for the S14. So what happens, happens tomorrow night and on Friday we lose wont worry too much. We getting ourselves ready for S14.

    Go Sharks.

Hi Muppets! Hallo vriende! Long time…

Hope everyone is well and looking forward to a fantastic rugby season!

  • 3

2 – Hello Willievz, Don’t think I have spoken to you before mate, or maybe you posting under another nic not sure, but anyhow yip, really looking forward to another brilliant rugby season. Been far, far too long without rugby.

Looking at that squad, think Sharks have plenty depth too. Still Ruan and Ludik to come back from injury too. My feeling Ruan should play FH. Give the goal kicks to someone else. Actually think he is a good FH that could become a great FH if left there to play a whole season.

Will still miss Frans Steyn this year at inside centre. Never got enough game time there last year having to fill in for Ruan at FH. Pity. Would even liked to have had him start at FB.

    Hi Puma,

Yes I am not familiar with your nic either. I haven’t blogged on rugby sites for quite a while.

The Sharks is fortunate to have so much depth in key positions. They will always be in a position to challenge for a top 6 finish.

As for the Pienaar conundrum – he is an unfortunate (or maybe fortunate?) sacrifice due to the requirements of the bench in modern rugby. You simply cannot afford to have 7 specialists on the bench. Someone has to sacrifice in this regard, and no better than Pienaar.

At the same time, I can understand why some people would prefer specialisation for him. The open question, however, is whether it will be beneficial for South African rugby?

5 – Good to meet you then Willievz,

Willievz, think my team will be in the top 6. I am HOPING though we get to the semi this year. We messed up bad last year against the weaker teams. Especially the Reds. Cheetahs had no problem we were totally out played by our bogey team. Hope this year is different. We get to play then two tough games first up at the Tank. Chiefs then Cheetahs and in Feb!!! The humidity now is full on. Not great for rugby in Durbs when it is like that. So not expecting us to pick up any bonus points in those two games once again. Just hope like mad we win em though before we go on tour.

    Who you support Willievz?

Ja, Not sure what Ruan wants really. Read he prefers to play scrummie but we have enough good SH in SA and also at the Sharks. Ruan I feel should concentrate on playing FH. We don’t have any back-up to Morne if he gets injured. Ruan though should let someone else take the kicking at goal though if he does play FH.

Lanklaas n Bru game gewen.

  • 10

Hello Super and Bdb, Been very quite here tonight.

  • 11

    sorry meant quiet.

  • 12

9 – Super, my first time playing SuperBru in the S14. Feel great to be taking part this year.

  • 13

  • 15

13 – BDB, Think they could make a really good centre pair. How old is De Wet Barry now?

  • 16

14 – Super always the best to play the players that come through the structures. Always.

  • 17

14: Super, ek weer gemengde gevoelens oor die jonger manne wat moet deurkom: Watermeyer en Dippenaar het my ongelukkig nog nie veel beindruk nie, maar ek hoop hulle bewys my verkeerd hierdie jaar.

  • 18

  • 19

Puma you met Willievz earlier, he knows his rugby, if he rejoins us when the Rugby starts you will see his posts, real value added. Hope he is not still a Stormer though. 😆

  • 20

19 – Super, I gathered that he knew his rugby well. Never spoke to him before but was good to chat with him tonight. Thought he was a Bulls supporter.

  • 21

Puma, I am a big Griquas supporter, back from the day when it was still Hoffe Park. However, I don’t have any preference in the Super14, as long as the Boks are strong. Generally I support the underdog.

  • 22

O yes now you refresh my mind willie, You must have felt proud of the Kwas last year. Winning the Vodacom million against the Bulls and robbed at the last minute in the CC.

  • 23

    superbul 22

Yes very proud, I was especially impressed with their intensity at the breakdown. Great to see the likes of Sarel Pretorius, Riaan Viljoen and Davon Raubenheimer coming through.

I would have selected Pretorius on the EOYT, but not Viljoen or Raubenheimer (though they both have something to offer in future, it might have ruined their careers).

Willie you must join us in our Superbru games, it does not take too much time to play and it is great fun.

20: seker omdat hy soveel ‘sense’ praat dat jy gedink het hy is ‘n Bul. 😉

  • 26

Raubenheimer was taken too early on tour. But maybe that will motivate him even more.

  • 27

Superbul 24, thanks, I will have a look!

  • 28

21 – Willievz, Good to see the Griquas doing well in the CC last year mate. Pleased to see someone here that supports the underdog. Neutral that is good to know.

  • 29

  • 30

23 – Willievz, Agree with you on Raubenheimer, not sure why he got selected. Good player that would have come really good later on but thrown in like that was not good at all. Just may have ruined his confidence for good. Hope not though.
