Johannesburg, 7 January 2010… The Golden Lions Rugby Union has announced another exciting signing from International Rugby Academy of New Zealand (IRANZ) to join the franchise ahead of the 2010 Vodacom Super 14.

Wayne Taylor, former All Blacks Conditioning Coach joined the Auto & General Super 14 Lions on Tuesday, and the Union is thrilled to have a coach of such a high caliber joining their ranks.

Taylor will work alongside Director of Coaching, Dick Muir, who filled the position towards the end of 2009.

Taylor is exceptionally experienced in fitness periodisation and planning, gym technique, nutrition, recovery, self massage and injury prevention, strength and conditioning, stretch and strength, team building and values and standards.

Wayne Taylor replaces ex conditioning Coach, Dr. Gerhard Jordaan who has moved to the Boland Rugby Union, and he has experience as a fitness training as far back as 1995.

“Coaches are incredibly difficult to come by, and we at the Golden Lions Rugby Union are ecstatic that we are able to enter the 2010 Vodacom Super 14 with Dick [Muir] leading the reigns and Wayne [Taylor] at his side. This is going to be an exciting year for the Union, and with so many changes that have taken place of the last year, we are confident that there will be a massive change in the team come the Super 14”, GLRU CEO Manie Reyneke said.

With this appointment, this makes the Lions coaching and support staff as follows:

Lions, now this seems like a good signing…. well done man….

  • 2

Agreed! This is the signing the franchise will benefit from, rather than ageing super stars!!!

  • 3

Excellent move from the Lions’ side. One of the detrimental factors for the Lions in the past was their fitness, I remember quite a few closely fought games that the Lions lost in the end by 7 points or less, simply because they ran out of steam.

Taylor is also a recovery specialist, hopefully he can get the Lions to keep their chins up on the tour especially.

I expect Taylor to reap the fruits of his labour around Round 5 of the Super 14, let’s hope so, the Lions are the only SA franchise (apart from my STORMERS obviously) that I actually bother to follow.

Lions are now on the right path, exciting times lie ahead!!! Think Jacque Fourie is going to regret his move still!!!!

  • 5

The Lions are on a shopping spree. Wonder if they need my help with some coaching. 😆

  • 6

Bit scared to ask the question…nou nou spring Willa weer op my, but when was he the AB conditioning coach? CV they give does not mention it.

  • 7

Snoek were not that desperate. Yet ..
A couple of years back, (actually a couple of decades, I’m getting old) people were too scared to walk past Ellispark carrying a tog bag because you might just get selected for the next game.

  • 8

Loosehead, I see you floating around…see in the paper Barend Pieterse dusted of his toks!

What the team going to do this year?

  • 9

    Demmit, missed him!

  • 10

Hey Swanie, I haven’t see that. It might just be a good idea.

For me the States are always in with a chance.

  • 11

    Self massage? OK whatever…

I think the Lions are on the comeback trail. The right people in the right positions or roles. I for one would love to see the Lions kick some WP but. It’s gonna bee a big one.

Eisssshhh we have this star studded Protea team with no killer instinct.

Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis have soared up the ICC Test player batting rankings following their centuries against England.

Smith has jumped seven places to No. 4 while Kallis has gained three places to No. 6. Smith is now only three points shy of his highest ever ranking which he achieved during the series-winning Melbourne Test in 2008.

AB de Villiers has gained one spot to No. 14 and is the other South African batsman in the top 20.

Dale Steyn remains the No. 1 ranked bowler while his new ball colleague, Morne Morkel, enters the top 20 for the first time. He has gained eight places to No. 16.

Makhaya Ntini (8th) and Paul Harris (13th) are the other two Proteas in the top 20.

Kallis remains the world’s No. 1 all-rounder. It is a position he has held unchallenged for a long time.

Oooh and all the guys wanting Harrises blood 13th is really good for a spinner. Be patient, give the groundsman sh$t , we dont prepare pitches in SA for our bowlers. With so many talented batters we must give our bowlers a chance, the batters will look after them self.

    12 – Superbul

    Figuurlik natuurlik.

Only one thing to say about the Lions, they lack depth still. They will start well as always and then when injuries kick in on a few choice players, they will battle again.

Hell I thought they had won more in the beginning, the games were close and good.
I believe you have some nice new cheetah photos, I saw Carol commenting….are you not going to circulate them?

It will be interesting having Spencer there….headestrong guy, we’ll see how he gets on. Dick is so laid back that he wont have a problem with him….I know I’m probably being dof now….but has Dick left the Boks setup….we dont always get all the news here?

  • 19

  • 20

Yes SuperBul and 4Man, still here?

SB, there is no real outstanding knocking on the door to take over from GS?

  • 21

    20: naand Brakanjan.

  • 22

Ek dink Parnell moet speel, hy gee minstens variasie.

  • 27

    4man en almal anders
ek het my fotos gisteraand gelink deur picasa met my nick
As julle op my nick klik gaan julle moontlik na picasa toe kan gaan , maar ek hoor jy moet eers n google account he. Wie het a Gmail , daai een sal werk.

  • 28
