A flyhalf crisis in the City of Roses may see the young Sias Ebersohn run out for the Cheetahs’ Super14 team, albeit only in the warm-up game against Eastern Province in a couple of weeks time.

With the vast pool of flyhalfs available to my favorite coach Naka, namely Naas Olivier and Louis Strydom, both injured, he may just get an early run to show his form. I hasten to add I can just see the other Super 14 sides shaking in their boots at the mention of our flyhalf stock. But if you think that is bad news for the opposition just wait, it gets even better; our esteemed coach mentioned that the giant of giants of part time flyhalfs, namely Tewis de Bruyn may also play flyhalf for a few minutes in the game!

For the record, Olivier hurt his knee during a training session last week, while Strydom underwent a knee operation after the Currie Cup and will not be considered for the game.

Ebersohn, 20 years old, will get a chance to impress with a good performance before the start of the series and a good performance may see him stay part of the Cheetahs’ Super14 plans a good deal longer than was initially planned.

Due to a plethora of injuries, he is currently part of an enlarged Super14 squad, but early indications are he will probably run out for the Free State in the Vodacom Cup again once it is reduced in size.

Another option is using Riaan Viljoen (fullback) to run out at #10 but Naka did say he would prefer to keep him at 15.

Naka had the following to say about Sias: “It’s only a warm-up and it’s against EP. He has played Vodacom Cup rugby and at under-21 level for Free State, so he will be able to do it.”

Being one of the Cheetah ‘reporters’ but for the few thousand miles seperating me from Bloemfontein I was wondering what happened to Meyer Bosman? Also, will Robert be playing S14 this year or is it another 7’s season for him?

Swanie, maybe you can get Os to do a cameo at flyhalf……..you could do a lot worse and I’d love to see the scrummie that tries to make a break around side of the scrum.

Hehe Manly, nou praat jy! But I am worried if we suggest it, Naka may see it as an opportunity to dust off his own toks…and we know how well he can catch a rugby ball!

True, but would Naka be persuaded to part with his fancy coaches shirt?

    NEVER!

    AHA!

The Saint’s predictions are not as far off as many would like to believe.

If he is good enough he is old enough. Play Ebersohn.

Loosehead, do you know the answers to my questions in 1 above?

The Cheetahs need to find someone and stick with him. I would play Sias the whole season, it is not like he would cost them a semi place if he fails. 😉

For about ZAR 500 K I’m sure that they could get the services of a semi-retired foreigner with dodgy knees who could (just about) outsprint Os, who could also double as a skills coach for a season.

Hell the Lions did it, so why not the Cheetahs?

Swanie, 9: He is injured and will only be able to play just after the start of the S14.
