Piet, Running on Dunes is very bad not just for the knees, but the hips and lower back. Never run on them.
I did some running on Dunes when I was working in Saudi Arabia years back. It just messes up the joints. You twist too much while running on that surface. Not good.
Swim if you can. That is better puts lets pressure on the joints.
