Would a loss against the Irish make this year a disappointing one for the Springboks?

This is a question that I hear many rugby lovers ask in the wake of a disappointing tour of Europe. Let’s firstly have a look at the results of tests played this year.

SA 26 – Lions 21 (H)

SA 28 – Lions 25 (H)

SA 9 – Lions 28 (H)

SA 28 – NZ 19 (H)

SA 31 – NZ 19 (H)

SA 29 – Aus 17 (H)

SA 32 – Aus 25 (A)

SA 6 – Aus 21 (A)

SA 32 – NZ 29 (A)

SA 13 – France 20 (A)

SA 32 – Italy 10 (A)

This gives us a winning record so far of 73 % which could become 67% if we lose to Ireland or 75% if we manage to win this weekend. These results gives us an aggregate score against everyone of 24 – 21.

The third test against the Lions was played with an inferior team, and had we played our top players in that game, a win was possibly on the cards. The game against Australia that we lost this year was the most disappointing one for me. We where outplayed that day, and looked like a shadow of the team that won every Tri nations game up to that point.

The test we lost against France was on the cards, and I called the French to win by 8 before kick off. The signs that the players where tired was to be seen in the Currie Cup Semi finals and to some extent in the second half of the final. And to make matters worse for the France game was the fact that we missed some key players.

So in my humble opinion, this was a great year for Springbok rugby, win or lose this weekend, and if we can manage the players better next year, we can have an even better year.

30- Smelly Fish, Andre Venter and Ruben Kruger were great. Young Deysel has a way to go still. 😆

Loosehead I’m used to giving it before a game – but I can take it after the game as well. Read my chirps during the week mate. Used to get a good banter back, but it is very quiet – but for a few from you. We want to play the best team and hope he picks the best team. BECAUSE when we win, we don’t want any excuses.

29 – You like a weeee fight before a game you say, typical of a front rower. Wil net apples gooi!

  • 35

Jeez, I think it’s gonna take a while for the Leppercorns to put their team back together again after the Boks are done with them!

Ja, work can be pretty tiresome, and workshops even more so. Attended a workshop at Provance Guest House just below The Mount in D’Urbanvale last week. My kop was pap by Friday…

If you don’t have any plans for Saturday, why not come over to Bloemendal for the annual Blues Summit. Biggest Blues festival on the continent. Great line-up including Patlansky and Albert Frost. Google Bluesfest for more details.

    Arrewaais, howz life?

Sorry Irish, i’m gonna throw some afrikaans in here.

Hoe om ‘n Haaiaanval te voorkom:

    1. Moenie in die see swem nie.
Meer as 99% van alle haaiaanvalle gebeur in groot watermassas, ook bekend as oseane.
Die manier om vas te stel of jy in ‘n oseaan is, is om die water te proe. Dit behoort sout te smaak.

Sodra hy lekker bloei, swem so vinnig weg as wat jy kan

    5. Luister noukeurig!
Elke Haai het ‘n Theme Song – As jy dié volgende hoor, swem vir jou lewe:
da-dam. da-dam. da-dam As dit so klink: dadam, dadam, dadam – dan is jy klaar in jou moer.

    6. Moenie paniekerig raak nie.
Bly kalm as ‘n haai jou byt.

Yes this was a very successful year for Bok Rugby. To win a Lions Series and to White Wash the ABs and beat Wallabies twice and get the Tri-Nations. The best year for a very, very long time.

19 – Irish, You country sure does have a beautiful anthem. Like the Scots do too. Please let someone sing our anthem like it should be sung not like we heard in France…..hehehe. Think they retired that oke.. 😆

Hope you well mate. This game is a biggie and I for one wish we had the 4 missing players, JdV, Spies, Juan and Fransie. Boks not playing as well with out those players. Espcially with Adi at inside centre.

We won all our SH games with Smit at TH so don’t have too much of a worry if they start Smit there but if they do have Beast LH, John Hooker and BJ at TH. We will be much stronger in our front row.

    47 – Snoek.. 😆 I hope I keep it too…LOL.

I am actually never good with predictions that is why I have never played SuperBru before. Now really enjoying it a lot.

  • 52

    48 – Snoek, Cheers mate.

  • 53

48 – Snoek, Those club games it is always a guess. I don’t watch much of the NH club games so had no idea who was playing there. Just had to guess.

If we lose this weekend we would have improved nothing from last year (67%).

So it would be a disappointment.

The Boks are better than the Irish, a loss should not be tolerated.

  • 55

Hi Puma – we contacted your embassy and they supplied us with a guy from Durban who will be singing the anthem.

  • 56

Morne – your really think so!

  • 57

    #51 Loosehead,

I spoke to Mike Crawford and he agrees its agood idea. He’s gonna be looking around for a proxima so that they can set up a big screen.

BTW if you check the full line-up you might recognise one or two of the combatants! 😉

  • 58

What that the Boks are better?

    Yes.

Or that a loss would not be good enough?

Yes, no matter what was achieved this year in winning cups, this team is better than a 67% winning average.

    – The Springboks could’ve easily lost 3 – 0 against the Lions. The first test saw the Lions botch 6 try-scoring opportunities which could’ve easily been a routing of the Springboks. The Second test saw the Springboks come out victorious after Jaque Fourie was awarded a try which definitely was not a try. The third test again showed that the Springboks have not learned how to better manage their second tier players.

    – The Tri-Nations was always going to be easier than usual with New Zealand not having the services of key players like Ali Williams, Richard Kahui, etc. who were all out injured, and also the fact that the Springboks stepped into the Tri-Nations prepared after the Lions series, they had game-time under the belt. New Zealand were severely depleted during the Tri-Nations, Dan Carter only making his comeback from a serious injury that kept him out for 6 months during the away leg (For us) of the Tri-Nations. Next year it will be All Black again for the other two sides in the competition and the Springboks could easily have a repeat of 2008… Australia destroyed the Springboks in that one game. That last game was all Frans Steyn doing something no other player in the world could do.

    – The way we’ve played in the NH is unacceptable.

    – 3 losses would be unacceptable in New Zealand’s books, its definitely in mine. 4 losses would be even worse.

    – The player management have not gotten any better. Peter de Villiers haven’t introduced enough young talent after taking over from Jake White. His contributions comes in the form of Heinrich Brussow, and Morne Steyn. That said however there’s no backup plan, and de Villiers is happy to just ignore the best players in the country for his favorites.

    – The forward shambles have been evident for a long time now. Injuries forced de Villiers to bring in BJ Botha. We will see on Saturday if de Villiers was forced in the right direction by injuries. He surely doesn’t deserve the credit because the Boks got owned up-front whole year.

The ball bounced in South Africa’s favor this season. 4 losses would be a fail. South Africa need to introduce proper players as backups, and get them to play together. Players like Januarie who was not there on performance is unacceptable. Peter de Villiers must have the board of selectors choose the team, and not have any influence on selections because of his favoritism towards his U/21 players. Guys like Hargreaves, Raubenheimer, etc. didn’t deserve to be part of the dirt trackers. There are better players.

Players also needs to be managed better so that we don’t have to Tim Noakes warn us the whole time.
