It is good to be able to have a united SA Nation again after the division of the Currie Cup. Our blood all turn to green every time that the Bokke pull those magnificent jerseys over their heads, our hearts swell with pride…. we expect nothing less than for the Bokke to win.. and win well.
End of Year Tour time, this time with a difference, 2 games have been included against Franchise Teams (Tigers & Sarries) and 3 Tests have been scheduled.
This means that there is ample opportunity for the Springbok Management to experiment and a clear extra Dirt-Tracker Springbok Team has been selected to go on tour.
It is worrysome that the chosen Bokke team for this game includes players who have never played together in their respective combinations… let’s look at this aspect critically…
In the front row, only Gurthro Steenkamp and Chilliboy Ralapele knows each other well, both being from the Bulls. At Tight Head though we have Jannie du Plessis who has not scrummed in combination with these two.
At lock Danie Rossouw and Bekker have never (or rarely) scrummed next to each other, but both have been regulars in the Bokke group.
At Openside flank there’s the sublime Dewalt Potgieter, but he’s actually a blind side flanker, at No 7 there’s Davon Raubenheimer who is at best a Currie Cup Flank and at No 8 there’s the in-form Ashley Johnson. None of these loosies have played together…. and there’s a definate imballance in the way the loosie-combo has been put together.
Amongst the Halfbacks, Heini Adams and Ruan Pienaar have never had the opportunity to play together and poor Ruan has once again been shifted from No 9 to No 10.
At centre we have 2 individual stars… Wynand Olivier and Juan de Jong… given time they could set the world alight, but as it stands, the first time they ever passed each other the ball was during this week’s training cessions.
The back 3 are from 3 different Provinces in SA, with Nokwe, the speedy but suspect defender on one wing, steady but unspectacular Odwa Ndungane on the other wing and Earl Rose, the unpredictable and sometimes unsteady fullback (who should actually not ever wear the green and gold).
These players are pitted against the “Bulls” of the North, who, despite giving 6 players to the English squad, is a settled side and doing very well in their competitions up North. In Mauger, they have a general… and their forwards are a solid unit.
It is difficult to make predictions on this one and my head seems to indicate that the Tigers might win, the heart however is hoping for Wynand Olivier and Juan de Jongh to run the Tigers to pieces.
Let’s make a compromise…. heart wins, Springboks by 5 – 8.
Players to watch: Wily Aaron Mauger is always worth watching, such a clever player even if he is out of position, but then Ruan Pienaar plays in so many positions he seems out of position wherever he plays but he too is a player of skill and greater speed. Johne Murphy (Tigers) is a most promising, committed young player. The other wing, Argentinian Lucas Amorosino, scored a spectacular try last weekend and could be a star in the making. For the Springboks the centre pair, young Juan de Jongh and more experienced Wynand Olivier, have the speed and skill to provide excitement. Most of South Africa will keep an eye on Earl Rose at fullback, mystified as many are at his selection. There will also be interest in Chiliboy Ralepelle’s captaincy. At school, Pretoria Boys High, he was highly rated as a player and a leader, following in the footsteps of John Smit at the school. Ralepelle has captained the Springboks once before – and that in Leicester in 2006 when the Springboks played a pick-up side called a World XV and beat them 32-7 at Walkers Stadium.
Head to Head: Aaron Mauger versus Ruan Pienaar. This could be the crux of the game.
There are no previous results. This is a new encounter though in the past Springbok touring teams would play against Midland Counties, The Springboks won in Leicester in 1906 and 1912 but lost there 30-21 in 1931. The Springboks won 3-0 in 1951 and the teams drew 3-3 at Welford Road in 1960.

Great summary there GBS ‘Jan’……
Now back to work!!
Also think they may surprise us, have been playing as a unit whereas our guys landed on Wednesday and have had 2 days to practice together……
and then there is the Rose factor…..Eish….
At hooker the Bokke is playing arguably the 5th and 6th choice hookers in SA (I rate Maku and Chilli behind Adriaan Stauss, Tiaan Liebenberg & Richard Strauss)
At props Wian du Preez, WP Nel, Coenie Oosthuizen and even Wikus Blaauw should all have toured in place of Gurthro, Doc Jannie and Heinke (heinke’s bee injured for almost the whole season)
At lock, Sykes and possibly Anton van Zyl should have been there ahead of Hargreaves.
At Blindside flank Davon Raubenheimer should have been in SA whilst Deysel should have started, with Vermeulen on the bench.
At No 8 we should have seen Albers in place of Kanko on tour.
At No 9, where is the lively Griqua…. what’s his name again…. eishhhhh
At No 10, Jacques-Louis Potgieter was clearly the 2nd best flyhalf, after Morne Steyn.
At wing, where is the Mapoe (pronounced Mapwe) dynamite, and the Juries dynamite….
At Fullback, where is Oupa Terblanche or Joe Petersen…
….. makes you wonder, does’nt it?
Is daar ‘n rugby-talk.com superbru groep!?
6 – Ja
GBS
VRYSTAAA…………….shite I mean Bokkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkke!
Geluk aan die Bulle-ondersteuners. Geniet dit.
From planet-rugby: ‘Outside the pack, nobody needs a reminder of the pace of Jongi Nokwe and Odwa Ndungane, nor about the enigmatic talent of Earl Rose who is clearly so good he can make himself look bad, so far ahead is he of the thoughts of others. Something like that anyway.’
Brilliant 🙂
Tigers by 6
It seems most people misses the rationale behind the selection of this team. Understanding the selection criteria a lot of the selections indeed makes sense.
Well I hardly watch NH rugby so had no idea who was in the Tigers team. They have some good players there.
Going to be tougher than I thought.
Going with my heart. Our Dirt Tracker Bok side to win.
Go and make us proud.
14 – dWeeper
Mapoe and Juries far better than Nokwe and Odwa. Would have had them in this side. Then think Odwa has the experience but that is all. I still would have had Mapoe ahead of any of them.
Deysel should have been selected straight up too not come in through the back door.
Well going to support our team. Cant moan anymore they are there and will give them 100% support.
14 – And WP Nel should have been there Vermeulen, J. Pietersen, Skyes and many more.
We just have to get behind them and support our team.
Hoping they win big tonight. Or if they don’t still just hope they win.
17@ Puma – If I had to select a Dirt-Tracker squad, it would have been:
WP Nel & Wian du Preez at props
Adriaan Strauss at hooker
Sykes and Danie Pakslae at locks
Dewalt Potgieter (6), Duane Vermeulen (7), Alberts (8 )
Sarel Pretorius from Griquas at scrummie
Jacques-louis Potgieter at No 10
Fabian Juries at No 11
Meyer Bosman at No 12 (Wynand in the Test team)
13 Juan de Jongh at No 13
Lionel Mapoe at No 14
Joe Petersen at No 15
It is vastly different from this team, vastly!!
18 GBS
We could probably beat any team with that team. That is now more like it. More like a Boks 2nd side that could take on anyteam.
Why they never selected those players is just crazy. We have such huge depth here to select from. Pity we never sent our best.
18
My span sal baie dieselfde wees as joune, maar ek sal nootgedwonge ‘n paar veanderings moet maak. hehehe
GBS when you going to do your picks on SuperBru? Went in to see your picks and you not done it yet. Go do your picks now.. 😆
Hierdie uit vandag se Die Burger:
’n Transformasie-foefie à la Hanyani Shimange – of pure Bok?
@24
Jip, ek beweer so!
22@ Puma – I’m never in a hurry to do SuperBru picks…. expect my picks at 20:30 only….
