It is now official that the Lions players mentioned will be playing for the Sharks.
What makes one wonder though is the little the Lions management knows of what is going on in their camp , and on their contracts.
Or is Mr Reyneke trying to Act big in the press while actually looking like a total fool?
With courtecy to News24 and Pieter Jordaan
Johannesburg – Willem Alberts is one of the Sharks’ three Lions acquisitions who has already loosened up with the Durbanites for the 2010 season.
Although the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) threw a lifeline to Alberts and his teammate Louis Ludik, to prevent their departure to Durban, the two are now officially part of the Sharks’ training squad for the Super 14.
Ludik is undergoing rehabilitation for his knee operation earlier this year.
A third Lion, lock, Gerhard Mostert, has already taken part in the Sharks practices.
The Sharks only got back together this week and Plumtree has confirmed that Alberts and company already form part of pre-season preparations.
“Naturally we have to prepare without our Springboks, but the players are doing heavy conditioning,” said Plumtree.
The Lions Super 14 squad, who started sharpening up early this month, will begin training on the field next week.
Johan Ackermann, the new assistant coach for the Lions and ex-Bok lock, says that the Lions will only begin field practice once the head coach, Dick Muir, returns from Europe.
Muir, the backline coach of the Springboks, will then have his first look at his new group of players.
The Lions’ group may still consist of 74 players, but it will be slimmed down to 40 players by the start of next week.
“This is our fourth week in the gym – with the goal that we make the players hungry to practice on the field again. They must crave it,” said Ackermann yesterday.
Of the new acquisitions, Jonathan Mokuena (eighthman), Burton Francis (flyhalf) and Marius Delport (centre/wing) are already training with the Lions, but Jacques Lombard (lock) and Tonderai Chavanga (wing) are undergoing rehabilitation.
According to Ackermann, Lombard, who joined the Lions from Griquas, has to undergo a knee operation on Monday.
He will be out of action for two weeks, Chavhanga is recovering from a shoulder operation.
Johan Snyman (lock) is still recovering from a back operation and scrumhalf, Jano Vermaak only had plates removed out of his broken ankle last week.
Ackermann looks forward to the new challenge as the Lions forwards’ coach.
“I am beginning at the deep end with a tough competition (the Super 14).
“But Dick has already done great things with big teams.
“And if I have to get involved with any guy, then that would be Dick, because he can lift a team,” said Ackermann.
I have a feeling Mr Reyneke has no clue when it come to legallities
as late as yesterday he was trying to tell the press he has things under control , and today its made official?
no wonder the Lions are struggling
or is the denial article posted in here earlier some thumb sucking of note ?
to be honest the denial never appeared in the press , but in voldy
Has this not always been the Lions management problem? After Luyt that is?
not sure one could call voldy good press π
good morning AB
yes it has ,
Morning Sharky
Gezz the Lions management are pathetic.
Morning Sharky! Looking at Reyneke on TV I always get the feeling that this guy is a mechanic from the East Rand somewhere!
gm irish mate ^5
more loskoppietjie
Well thank goodness it is now official.
lol good morning puma brudda , poor willa and edd doing articles that its not legal for these guys to be at the sharks training , when infact its official
bad inside info they getting π
It seems that the whole Lions team has now relocated – think I could ply my trade with them. Don’t the even know how to draw up a contract!
Morning Boys – Well done Sharky and Irish on your ‘pieces’ today!!
Puma, it is only a matter of time before your journalistic juices will flow!!
This is getting rediculous now. Have they signed with the Sharks or not? To many conflicting articles about this issue at the moment.
Carol – 12
It’s difficult to create a article out of scratch if it’s not your thing, people like Morne and GBS are blessed with the use of words.
14- Snoek, I was pulling Pumas leg, GBS was trying to get him to do a sharky piece and he just chuckled!!
You are right some are blessed with the gift of the gab, some of us are not π I will stick to ‘general waffle’!!
10 – Sharky, Some have got it wrong agree there brudda. Now hope it is all settled and they can train with peace of mind.
11 – Irish, You could use your trade with the Lions π The contracts there seem to have been a bit of a mess it seems.
12 – Morning Carol, Maybe one day π I am lazy and rather just read what is above π
Now have to go out. Will miss the selections but will see them later. Please let Bakkies be over that back injury and in the team.
Cheers all catch up later.
15 – Carol, More a Cricket Thread π I will keep the updates of the game going on but Super can do the cricket threads.
Okay out back later. Sun out and a brilliant day. Rugby should have been played here in good conditions.
@17 Puma – thanks hey – windy, wet and very little visibility…gotta move – lol
Off the subject – GBS, you communicate with Ian Swartz, no? Is there a continguency plan wrt the bull’s locks?
I cannot really see the backup as worthy replacements for bakkies, vic and danie.
Did they not strike a deal with Juandre Kruger that he can play overseas, earn some money and join up with the bulls again after 2011 WC when the incumbents retire.
That will be good news as he is definately a great talent and, rightfully weren’t going to wait forever.
In light of this it is good news that WP, Sharks and the lions bulked up their lock department, leaving the door open for him to join up with the bulls in 2 years time.
They’ll still win f’all. Ed must be going mad. π
Hiyas snoek my maat
when it comes to articles , i would rather go with what i reaad in the beeld and mercury etc , before i believe articles done on some site , where people wrkite with no backing
there was no press release regarding what was said about alberts and ludick not being allowed to train with the sharks,
this so called article was in keo wetalkrugby and then posted in here
the ones i posted are from news 24, the daily news, the mercury, the natal witness, die burger, die volksblad , they are all reputable journo’s
infact i think john bishop of the natal witness is probably the most reputable sports journo in SA
thus i trust his article 100% , which is what i did , and most top newspapers have now confirmed its official ,
Sharky,
As far as I am aware the union they are contracted to or are playing for have to issue them with something like a release certificate before they are allowed to play for another union.
Those are SA Rugby rules.
So the guys might be ‘training’ officially with the Sharks but whether they have been officially ‘released’ is quite another story which is why SARU’s legal guys have now been asked to intervene.
Fark, 2 Articles on these 2 guys… damn get it over and done with, FFS !
It’s not good for the Lions, not for the players either… and not good for the Tjarks…
I suggest the Lions release them, they have similar contracts to the Jaque Fourie one… so why go through all the Legal Battles 3 times…. crazy, crazy, crazy!
The Lions must let go and move on, sort their NEW SYSTEMS and NEW PLAYERS out and focus on the right things now…. stop dragging the old baggage around. It still reeks of the lack of absolute chaos which clearly ruled at the Lions before!
Meanwhile the Bulls, Stormers and Cheetahs are getting on with things with total harmony in their sides in preparation for the Super 14….
19@ Onerb – I’m trying to set up a joint Lunch appointment with Ian Schwartz and Heyneke Meyer…. I have lots of questions…
I also want Ian to write us at R-T a good Article about how, when and what happens or should happen when a Union wants to talk to and contract a player from another Union… because it seems only the Bulls and Cheetahs are doing all negotiations above board and without causing a stink in the media and between Unions.
This looks to me what cause the hold up:
Christo Ferreira, General Manager Laws and Regulations at SARU, told rugby365.com that advocate Jannie Lubbe has been appointed to “look into” the matter.
“He must decide if they [the GLRU] are entitle not to give a clearance for those players to move and also decide on the GLRU’s claims that a formal offer must be on their [the GLRU] table before such clearance can be given,” Ferreira said.
“Hopefully we’ll have his [Lubbe’s] decision by early next week,” Ferreira added.
lol gbs boet , problem is not by the sharks but by the lions
reyneke is a damn embarrasment to thier union
he keeps denying whilst its even been made official , thats also to say if one take the denial article as being facts
as i posted earlier here that it was first posted as a thread in voldy
in saying that its the same as the john smit maybe going to lions rumour
ill give you 3 guesses as to who started that rumour in voldy , and then it became a thread here and in wetalkrugby
i am even sure you wont be surprised at who started that rumour π
#26 Sharky……Who?
26@ Tjarky – Fact is, the Transfer Certificates have not been issued… and the Sharks should respect that SARU Rule…. simple as that.
Ludik and Alberts should be sitting twiddling their thumbs right now or practise and / or rehabilitate on their own, not within Sharks structures… at the same time the GLRU should be sqeezed for those freegin Transfer Certificates by the players in question… they want to leave, they should be doing the sqeezing.
You can say what you want, but the Sharks are setting a dangerous and immoral Precedent here…. and we all know Christo Ferreira at SARU likes sitting on his hands, doing farkall productive…
26@ Tjarky – Fark, who cares who starts rumours on Voldy… I don’t read there.
Damn, I’ve even had a mail from someone telling me what a certain individual supposedly said on Voldy… did’nt even read it… deleted it… why would I farking care….
GBS MOENIE SO SUUR PARRA WEES NIW π
triplets dont be so inquisitive π
gbs is this the same lions crying a river that have jp joubert trinjing with them before they had a release certificate from the cheetahs for him??
