The Azzuri took on the Springboks in Udine, Italy at 16:00 SA time. The Springboks won comfortably 32 / 10. (See the Match summary)
Finally a win for the Springboks on Tour this year.
They scored 4 tries to the solitary Italian try.
The Springboks however are not close to the finished article yet, there were hickups, specially when they allowed the Italians to do too much of the play in te first half. The scrums were a mixed bag as well and only seemed to really get going when John Smit reverted to hooker and BJ Botha came on to anchor the Bokke scrum at tight head. I hope this settles it then, John Smit is a hooker… and a jolly good hooker and BJ Botha is needed at tight head.
South Africa took an early lead with 2 tries whilst Simone Favaro was in the sin bin, then Italy came back at the Bokke, controlling the ball well and putting the Springboks under a good measure of pressure.
In this time Italy manufactured a try by Gonzalo Garcia. In the first half Craig Gower missed three kickable penalties and the half ended 12 / 7 to the Springboks.
Morné Steyn also started out quite wayward with the boot to posts, he missed two penalty attempts and a conversion. Apparently it is a different ball that they use there in Italy to the one that Morné is used to.
The second half was more enterprisng by the Bokke and when BJ Botha eventually took the field, with John Smit moving to hooker… Adriaan Strauss leaving the field, the scrums were much better. Beast also joined the front row at that stage, so the best front row on tour consisted of Beast at loosehead, John Smit at hooker and BJ Botha at tight head.
Matfield came on and Bakkies left the field… with Bekker moving to the No 4 lock position and Matfield resuming his favoured No 5 lock position.
We saw that as soon as the Springboks went wide against Italy, away from their powerful forwards, that Italy was vulnerable.
Heinrich Brüssow was on fire yet again, stealinf vital balls at vital times.
Morné Steyn fially adapted to the strange ball in the second half and made the score 15 / 7 in the 46th minute.
Another very positive substitution happened when Jean Deysel came on to replace Ryan Kankowski, he slotted in at blindside flank, with Danie Rossouw moving to the No 8 berth… this clearly worked better, Deysel slotted in perfectly and Danie Rossouw suddenly revived his tour fitting in properly at No 8.
The Springbok’s 3rd try was skillful and the handling was sublime. After Morné Steyn started the move in his own 22m area, the ball went to Danie Rossouw who ran well and passed a marvelous little back-hander to Jaque Fourie as hewent down in a tackle. Jaque Fourie raced on, passing to Bryan Habana on his inside right hand side, Habana made a break then passed to Fourie du Preez who maestro’ed (if there is such a word) over the try line.
Gower then converted a penalty, making the score 22 / 10.
Morné Steyn made it 25 / 10 soon thereafter.. and was then promptly replaced by Ruan Pienaar at fly half. At the same time Wynand Olivier came on to replace Adi Jacobs.
The deserving Wynand Olivier finally scored his first Test try when he crashed over after an inside pass from Fourie du Preez. Ruan Pienaar converted the easy conversion. The score was now 32 / 10, which also turned out to be the final score.
Finally, Francois Hougaard got his firs Test Cap, coming on as a late replacement in the last 4 minutes of the match.
All in all a good day for the Springboks with a lot of questions answered.
Congratulations are in order for the 3 new caps in Bokke Tests, Wian du Preez, Jean Deysel and Francois Hougaard… may you continue to wear the jersey with pride and distinction.
Which questions were answered, might you ask? Well, I would sa y the following:
- Our Front row should be Beast Mtawarira (1), John Smit (2), BJ Botha (3)
- Our loosies should be Brüssow (6), Jean Deysel (7), Danie Rossouw (8 ) – whilst Pierre Spies is injured… with Kankowski moving out the match dat 22 all together. Dewalt Potgieter should be on the bench.
- At inside centre, Wynand Olivier should be the starting centre in the absense of Jean de Villiers, not Adi Jacobs.. he should be relegated to the bench or out of the match day 22 with Juan de Jongh possibly claiming a bench spot in his place.
- For now, Ruan Pienaar seems to be adequate on the bench as utility player, so too Francois Hougaard.
No more experiments Mr Peter de Villiers & Co…. this is what is needed, this is what should happen… please listen to us… some of us know what we’re talking about!

@ irish i think that is why we suffer in the eoyt we freese out of the game
328 – Irish, that about sums it up!! However talk to Soda Joe or Jim T and life in our neck of the woods sounds like a walk in the park! they do extreme over there in the States!!
I’m sure the big one is still to come Smallies. Next weekend! We can’t wait here. Don’t think the Southern Hemisphere understand just how big these games are for us. Highlight of an Irishman’s rugby life is a Bok and All Black game in Europe. We are like pigs in shit at the moment mate. That means happy if you don’t understand.
330@ Carol – What do you call a thingy which zips open that you wear over a short sleeved shirt then?
328 – sure they do too.
Well I hear the Irish call outside. Commeth the man and commeth the hour…the noise has begun and the pub bekons. Have to join my brothers. Cheers all….GO IRELAND
329@ smallies72 – Ken die Oos-Vrystaat goed, my oorle Ma se mense is van Clocolan…. my oorle Pa se ma was gebore in ‘n grot naby Clarens / Golden Gate in die Boere-oorlog… ek het diep familie in die Oos Vrystaat!

338 Night Irish, have a Guinnesss for me!!
@ irish the irish tests are allways huge for me to after os du rand, kieth wood is my all time best frontranker
@gbs so jy is soos supa ‘n hangkas cheetah ?
344@ Smallies72 – Ek is in Pretoorsdorp gebore en daar getooi, geskool, gestudeer… gerugby… so ek is ‘n properste Bul… 45 jaar al
I’m signing off for now…Night boys
Well done to the ‘Mighty Springboks’ – back in a winning position again!!

The total lack of knowledge by the coach has been exposed regarding the front row.
Even worse, if you dont know then get in somebody who does.
That does not seem to have happened.
Now all fans can see what we have been talking about for over a year.
BJ Botha is the best specialist tight head we have.
As I said before here, PDV should have had BJ as the second name on his shopping list after Smit as captain.
Smit will tell you that BJ is the best tight head we have had in years.
How can we have PDV and Gold make these vital decisions so badly?
Bok rugby is not about trial and error!!
Our scrumming problems have been made far worse by PDV and Gold in their inability to respect the front row, select the right players and build a front row for the future.
They are guilty.
And lastly, injuries are a bad excuse, it starts long before then, with their lack of understanding.
Now the fat is in the fire, because they have to decide whether Smit is the tight head against Ireland or not.
Do they select based on their pride and try to justify their mistakes, or are they man enough to stand up and admit failure, by selecting BJ at tight head, with Smit at hooker as it should have been from the day PDV took the job.
A big improvement when the Bench came on – the first time I saw the scrum go forwards for a long time – think the first test against the B&I Lions. Smit is not a prop – and the sooner it is accepted the better. Teams that play guys continuously out of position come off second best. Play specialists whether 1 or 15. Just a simple dumb Irishmans view.
Well let’s see which team he picks against Ireland. It is going to be a huge game.
GBS
Gaan ‘n grote wees!!
351 – TH, Good post mate. I would start with John back at hooker. For me anyway think he is our best hooker. Have always rated him more than Bissie. Bissie to the bench and start with Beast at LH, John Hooker, BJ at TH.
Deysel MUST start at blindside too and Danie probably at 8. I feel for Kanko really, he just has never had enough game time at this level. He was playing superb in 2007 and even last year. Just been sitting about being a fringe player got him no where this year. So for Ireland it has to be Danie at 8 but please they must start with Deysel at blindside Danie is not a 7.
Think I am feel a lot more positive now.
353 – Irish, Morning mate.
GBS, Where is my cricket thread boeta?
Proteas batting first and are now 38/2 after 8 overs. We in a bit of trouble there.
GBS wake up boet, Where is the crici thread?
KP, daai twee papsakke tel nie as ‘n “versameling” rooiwyn nie!

Hondbyt
