Ireland took on the Springboks at Croke Park, Dublin today. Ireland won 15 / 10.

It is with mixed emotions that I make this match summary…

Let’s start at the beginning. It was a pleasure, no an absolute pleasure, seeing the Springbok scrum going forward… the first 3 scrums must have scared the Irish silly and then came the fourth scrum and the Bokke pulverised the Irish even more, leading to a well worked move left and Schalk Burger, the old war horse barging his way over the try line for the only try of the match.

Morné Steyn converted the try and at this stage the Sringboks were leading 7 / 3.

The Springbok forwards continued their onslaught and set up a golden opportunity for Morné Steyn to slot a drop goal, which he duly did…  Bokke 10 / 3!

The Irish began to find their feet though, with excellent line-out steals against the Springboks and with sublime cleaning of the ball, over the player on the ground. They defended well and it became difficult for the Springboks to get over the halfway line.

Morné Steyn missed two long range penalties, one dropping under the crossbar and one dropping both under and against the upright.

Jonathan Sexton put a penalty over and suddenly it was Ireland 6 / Bokke 10, there was just a four point margin, this was also the half time score.

After half time the Irish came out fired up, forced mistakes from the Springboks and they conceded penalty after penalty within kicking range, with Sexton slotting them time and again, making it 9 / 10, then 12 / 10 and lastly 15 / 10 for Ireland.

Eventually Morné Steyn was replaced by Ruan Pienaar, who did no better than Morné, having a kick charged down and missing a penalty attempt.

Jean de Villiers replaced Wynand Olivier who had a top game, specially on defence. There was a bit more to the running game with Jean on, but to no avail and at a time when only a try would have won them the game.

Sexton then missed 2 penalties as well….

BJ Botha was replaced in the game, why I’m not sure, but John Smit moved to tight head and Bismarck du Plessis slotted in at hooker. Andries Bekker was replaced as well, with Danie Rossouw moving into the lock position and Dewalt Potgieter earning his first cap.

During the last 8 minutes, the Bokke threw everything at the Irish who defended and defended and kept the Bokke out.

Go rest now Bokke, fix those weary bodies, next year is another big year!

Your team can go far if they keep playing with that attitude. But i will look at your progress with renewed interest. Will watch how you play your away games, are you like India in cricket? And will lookout how you play without the fanatical crowd. Sa must do what you guys did play in the bigger stadiums, like the newly build Soccer City with 100,000 seats

WTF Puma? Which pass was that? The only pass I saw was a perfect pass into the breadbasket which any other flyhalf would probably have run into and used to attack from. In stead Pienaar opted to kick in clear direct contradiction of every possible reason for him being there, which could only have been to change to a running game.

But then Potties has never been your man. Now I would like to know what that guy did wrong in the 7 minutes he was on. Or did he sit on the wrong butt cheek on the bench because he sat on his left one and Jean Deysel sat on his right one. You are being pathetic man. Get a grip . I thought you were an adult, but you behave like a child How do you expect to be taken seriously after that low blow? BUT THANKS FOR SHOWING YOUR TRUE COLOURS!

GBS good neutral summary, sort off. We will hear a lot more about this game. The emotions will calm down from my side, but i feel that we played like a team who was not tired. If they had tired bodies then they all deserve medals for bravery. To attack like that up to the end with broken , tired bodies is worth Presidential recognition.

What i said during the game just showed the biggest short coming of PdV, his understanding of the proper use of the bench.
Dont just look at this game his track record speaks for itself.

Why never sub VM? Why never JS? ….

    366 – Bluebeard,

Go back and look. He threw the pass forward. Ref blew him. That was it. Not him that lost us the game but he never contributed much.

Yes, They should have brought on Deysel. He played last week, had a great game and also a feel for the team, because he played with them last week. No brainer mate. He did pass forward and that what I had said. Sorry it touched a nerve with you but that is honest go back and look.

You can insult all you like. I don’t take notice of stupid stuff like that. I give a honest opinion and you say I am like child? Get to grips mate. Just grow up man.

We just kicked everything away. Our lineouts were a mess. Then I expected we may struggle there with Gert being there Forward Coach. He knows our players like clock work.

We lost this game long before that. Morne missed 3 kicks at goal. 9 points and Ruan l another 3 points. That is where we lost it 12 points down the drain. If we got that we would have won.

Showing true colours when you speak the truth? Ag, that is just daft. Sleep it off and come back tomorrow with something better to say really.

Did you say well done to Ireland? Maybe you should because we are sportmen here on this blog.

If I hadn’t experienced it first hand tonight, I wouldn’t have believed it if someone had told me what you said about it being a forward pass. Nevertheless I gave you the benefit of the doubt because I couldn’t believe an adult man and supposed knowledgable person could make such a statement, and went back on the PVR and revisited the roughly 7 minutes Dewald Potgieter spent on the field- of which at least two were spent watching from behind the poles.

In that time he only made 1 pass and that was when he picked up behind the scrum and passed to Ruan Pienaar who in turn kicked into an opponent and from the resultant loose play Victor Matfield was penalized for an offense.

Now from where I’m at I reckon that pass was at least two meters backwards, but that’s beside the point. If it was forward as you state, the ref would have blown him for it, but he didn’t. I don’t know where you saw that the ref blew him. Go back and have a “Kyk weer, en weer , en weer” as many times as you like- the first time the ref blew his whistle after the pass was when he punished Victor.

I actually don’t know where you get the audacity to even try to defend your bias by responding to my response to your BS. I am actually astounded. I see you mentioned elsewhere that you were enjoying some wine. Based on your observations I would suggest that you’ve probably had one glass too many.

By the way, my apologies – the Irish played the better rugby and were full value for their win. I forgot my manners when I read your post.

  • 371

Well done to the Irish. Ther were deserved winners over a Bok team who were rubbish.

  • 372

At the end this EOY tour is the best thing that could have happened.
If we won yesterday with the boot of Morne everything would have been declared honkie dory. Now we need great analists to show Peter the way.

Look at the All Blacks improvement since the 3N tournament and compare it to ours.

  • 373

All year we got away with Mornes dead eye dick kicking. Any realistic person would have known that come the day he misses we must adjust our game plan. Did FdP had any freedom to tap and go yesterday. If so why not get another 10 meters with quick taps. The fact is we heaped all the pressure on MS and never helped him to get the pressure off him.

He tackled like a demon yesterday.

    Tries scored this year
    Walabies 29 in 14 tests
All Blacks 25 in 14 Tests
    Springboks 21 in 12 Tests

    Tries conceded
    Walabies 15 in 14 tests
All Blacks 11 in 14 Tests
    Springboks 20 in 12 Tests

The things PdV must do is get a manual ” how to use your subs bench”
    Get rid of Dick Muir
    and Gary Gould
Stick with JS at hooker, Bismark is poor lately
Give VM a break, maybe the rest of the world knows his line out tricks by now, so Vic get the grey matter working.
    Hope Bakkies get 100% right
Get a nippy scrumhalf to try and mix it in that position

  • 376

My standout player in the Bok side was Zane Kirshner.
Habana must come down to earth, how much did WP give him, his head swollen?

  • 377

    Superbul
    More maat

  • 378

    KP
Ek verskil van jou oor altwee.

Ek sal ander he wat met my saamstem so kom ons laat dit daar.

  • 382

380 – Piet, hehehe. Are you going to run the 21km race there? Boet you better be trained and ready. Get some very good running shoes too.

I have run the Two Oceans years back and going up Chapmans Peak is beautiful but tough, it is the running down the otherside that kills the joints. So make sure you have good running shoes. Get GBS to run it with you 😆

  • 383

372 – Super have to agree with you.

  • 384

  • 385

    @302 Puma
Don’t you worry bru, I will be ready….feeling like going right now!
    Fit as a fiddle…
Starting serious training with my friend Ewald Bonzet on Jan 14, we have done it before, twice, him and I.
But I want Grant10, RobZim and Skoppie and those other big mouthed ‘bergies’ out there with me, at Chapmans….I wanna dump them in their own backyard….
Let’s see who’s who in the zoo.
I will be ready, watch this space, I have the time, and I am willing and able and available…so, come bite me you moegoes!!!
    Heeeehaah, gooi mielies!!!!!

  • 386

385 – Piet, Good for you boet. Wish I could run that race with you. Ran for about 20 years. Must have done hundreds of 21km races. Running was my passion. Now have kak knees and lower back.

So you run it for me too boet. Ja, get them to run with you Piet….hehehe. Chapmans not easy I know but it is the going down that hurts more. Well especially if you have run almost 33km before you start to run up Champans. Well that is the mark when running two Oceans. Used to be not sure what route they do now.

Anyhow I support you all the way boet. It is the most beautiful route to run anywhere in the world. Enjoy it for me too.

  • 387

    394@ GBS
Ek, Ewald, Danie Malan en n paar ou Bellville rugbypelle hol saam, hulle sal my dra.

  • 388

384 – GBS you go and run it with Piet…hehehe. Start training now. You can do it. If Piet can you can. Get good running shoes though.

  • 389

    386@ Puma
No, we are not doing the 56, only 21 kms……no sweat, i think.
But here it is only flatlands on the beach, except for the dunes (worse than Chapman’s, believe me!) I need some uphill tarmac training still, starting in Jan with Ewald, in Durbanville.
So, I still have some carbo (Hansa) time, hehehehehe!

  • 390

388@ Puma – No man, last time I ran a few half marathons was 24 years ago… was in the Army then, had done JL’s and continued to run with my troops, so did not need to train extra, I was super fit.. pulse of 48 a minute, was 72kg of throbbing babboon bait back then…
