Sadness for some and joy for others as Beast Mtawarira , Wian du Preez and Adriaan Strauss joins the Springboks, and injured Chiliboy Ralepelle and Gurthro Steenkamp head home after being injured during the Springbok opening match.

Good news for the Springboks as Beast Mtawarira is cleared to play.

Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira has been cleared to tour with the Springbok squad following productive discussions between the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and the Sports Ministry.

SARU was alerted to clauses in the National Sport & Recreation Amendment Act, 2007, which needed to be completed before Zimbabwean-born Mtawarira’s place in the end-of-year tour squad could be confirmed.

“We are delighted with the news after discovering this problem during the week,” said Mr Oregan Hoskins, president of SARU.

“The government has been very helpful in expediting the completion of the necessary protocols and we’re all relieved that Beast will be available for selection for the Springboks against France in Toulouse on Friday.”

The protocol revolved around clause 6(3) of the National Sport and Recreation Amendment Act of 2007, which requires an explanation to the Minister of Sport for the selection of non-South African nationals.

One can only but hope that this is the last time, when this happens as it could only be a disruption to the player and the team, and one hopes that in future these problems are resolved long before tours are due to start

In other news, injuries have ended the tour up north for hooker and midweek captain Chiliboy Ralepelle and prop Gurthro Steenkamp who will return home after both being injured during the opening match of the tour of the Springboks against the Leicester Tigers at Welford Road on Friday night.

Ralepelle has an injured foot and has to see a specialist. Steenkamp injured his knee.

Tighthead Jannie du Plessis is doubtful at this stage with an injured hand, but it is unsure if his tour will continue or end.

This comes as good news however to Vodacom Free State Cheetahs front-rankers Wian du Preez (prop) and Adriaan Strauss (hooker) who have been called up as replacements and are set to join the squad shortly.

It is no doubt that these two players will strengthen the Springboks tight five play as they have shown tremendous form of late.
