Paddy O’Brien, IRB referees’ chief, met with Graham Henry in London yesterday to apologise to the All Blacks for the Stuart Dickinson’s handling of the AB v Italy game last weekend.

He went on to say the impact on Crockett, who repeatedly tried to tell the ref of the problems at scrum time, had to be taken into account . “You’ve got a young guy trying to launch his test career and get things right and the referee is inaccurate. That is our problem, we’ve got to deal with that ref which we will – just as a coach deals with a player who is not playing well.”

O’Brien told Fairfax media “We’ve got to be fair to teams. If the referee is not accurate we’ve got to put our hand up. We need to educate that referee and improve him because the management of scrummaging on Saturday was not of an international standard. The best example I can use is in the last 10 minutes there were eight scrums, of which seven, the tighthead for Italy is purely illegal. Up here they’re crying that it should have been a penalty try where as it should have been a penalty first scrum to the All Blacks.”

Paddy O’Brien has given Stuart Dickinson a DVD of the match to review, pledged he would be coached on how to better adjudicate the scrums & told to lift his game lest it affects future opportunities.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Kaplan will control the All Blacks’ test against England at Twickenham on Saturday.

So when PdV complains he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but if Henry complains, then Paddy can’t jump higher to please him. Typical Paddy. Inconsistent when he was a ref, inconsistent now.

Graham Henry did not complain to anyone as far as I am aware – he simply requested clarity on scrum rulings so he could train his team to operate to work within those rulings.

& I see no reference to PdV in the aricle – draw from that whatever conspiratorial indications you choose 😉

    lol
soooooooo do i get this right … paddy o’brien (a nzlander) has apologised to his fellow countrymen for being treated “unfairly” by an australian?
the australian then is told to go sit in a corner, put his naughty hat on and watch dvd’s on “how to be like paddy”?

ok, on a serious note now …
    why did paddy intervene?
is it because henry complained about the handling of the game?
will we finally see the irb doing something about the inconsistent manner rules are applied by their officials?

    hmmmm, i dont know.
again, i think this is just an indication of how amateurish the irb really is!!

If Ted did complain (& I am not saying he did – I have no idea) my guess is was it can only have been through “proper” channels & not the media.

    princess @ 6
dont get me wrong … i dont have a problem with paddy saying that one of his officials got it wrong.
my concern is around what the irb plan to do to rectify this problem
all indications are that nothing will be done.
we’ll still have the problem of inconsistent application of rules by different refs etc etc etc
thing is … rugby is a professional sport
    but
its seems to be run by an organisation thats amateurish in everything they do!!

    Irish Devil
Working on budgets & willing to talk to the devil himself rather than do them ! 😯

Okay … as you can see I am just marginally sensitive to anyone thinking ABs get special treatment when Dan Carter’s citing & subsequent ban should clearly show otherwise ! 🙂

I reiterate my idea that Linesmen, TMOs, Captains & Coaches should be required to grade all aspects of every referee’s game & these scores submitted to Ref-HQ to form an independent, accurate reflection of each ref’s capability & the grade of games he (or she) gets to officiate are awarded based on his cumulative score.

Seems scorchingly simple to me – 360 degree reviews have been performed in “normal” industries for years now !

RP @ 9 I agree with your sentiments re the grading of refs by the parties you nominate. Refs should be held accountable after EVERY match, as are players, coaches and selectors. Although I am concerned at Paddy’s impartiality, after all, he lives in Invergargill and is a citizen of one of the countries he is bound to administer in terms of critiques, etc. Sending Dickinson home with a DVD to watch is pure amateur-hour, especially in light of Kaplan’s appalling exhibition on the weekend, in particular the Palu yellow card.
It’s not Paddy’s fault, as he is reacting in accordance with IRB instructions; no, clearly, the problem with referees lays solely at the feet of the Papal few: the IRB!
