WP Nel, the Cheetahs prop has been named in the Barbarians squad to play the All Blacks at Twickenham on 5 December 2009.
Nel was widely tipped to earn a Springbok call up for the End of Year Tour but, after missing out on that selection, will be the Barbarians’ uncapped representative at the home of English rugby next Saturday.
A powerful scrummager and a willing runner, the 23 year-old will be looking forward to rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s biggest names and performing on one of the games grandest stages.
All in all, 10 South Africans have been included in a squad of 22 players, 4 backs and 6 forwards.
The Barbarians squad will be:
Backs: Leigh Halfpenny (Wales), Bryan Habana (South Africa), Joe Rokocoko (New Zealand), Drew Mitchell (Australia), Jamie Roberts (Wales), Jaque Fourie (South Africa), Morne Steyn (South Africa), Matt Giteau (Australia), Fourie du Preez (South Africa), Will Genia (Australia)
Forwards: Bismarck du Plessis (South Africa), Stephen Moore (Australia), Tendai Mtawarira (South Africa), W P Nel (Free State Cheetahs), Salvatore Perugini (Italy), Victor Matfield (South Africa), Danie Rossouw (South Africa), Carlo del Fava (Italy), Rocky Elsom (Australia), Schalk Burger (South Africa), George Smith (Australia), Andy Powell (Wales).
Goooooooo Nel, show them what you’re made of!
10 South efricans in the squad!
Kry die arme Janne jammer. Wat n lang jaar.
He must be feeling great. Well there you go they can see how good he is and we can not. He should have toured with the Dirt Trackers.
Why are so many South Africans in the team? Our players are exhausted now to play this game. Jeepers they should just be coming home after the Ireland test.
Looks almost like a Bok test against the ABs there.
Well well i dont think our players are managing them self at all. How can everyone moan and complain about tiredness and the players say yes to more bucks. This game is not forced on them it is their own choice.
Anyway if they all rest next year its OK we can take a sabbatical year, thats the Bulls i am talking about. 😆
4 – Hello Super,
Think they are just stupid to be playing in that Barbarians game. They just about going to make playing Ireland all the walking wounded, then to say yes to play that extra game. Is just daft. Pick up a serious injury there and they will lose out big time. I know money talks but if they get injured they will lose more than they will gain playing in the Barbarian game.
The only SA player that should be playing for the Barbarians is WP.Nel. The others are just far too exhausted and already carrying injuries. Crazy..
Puma if we beat Ireland on Saturday this will be the best year ever for n Springbok team, do you sort of agree?
Beating the BIL, The ABs, winning the 3N and if this one happens it will be the 6N champs too.
How much weight will the tired story then carry? Look i know if we do it Saturday , then next year will pose myriads of problems. Everyone and with that i mean everyone will study us and try and do the French thing to us.
I am serious that i would accept a poorer year next year, it must come, and I wont blame it on tiredness. Rather the lack of vision, the lack of variety and the stagnant coaching.
What PdV MUST do is get new ideas in, get a Eddie Jones guy in , totally new plans and ideas. Or blame fatigue.
7 – Super, I
If we beat Ireland this will be our best year in rugby ever. I know we lost to France and that was a pity. Remember we are without 4 of the players that played with these players in those tourneys this year. Think if we had those players in the team we may have beaten France.
Just think injured players must not play in the BaaBaa game and also exhausted players lead to injured players. Just hope they come out of that game with no injuries. We win nothing there with our players playing in that game.
You right Super maybe next year PdV should get some new ideas bring in other coaches. Maybe some of our SA S14 coaches and tap into their ideas too. More brains together always helps.
Back later. Going to watch something on tv now.
beflok ou wp hou so aan jy gaan nog ‘n bok yster word
Puma 5 – Hey, this is our chance to see some of the ‘First Team’ Springboks play. They can pull on their boots for one more match before they have their well earned break!!
Hope Bakkies back comes good, I really want to see him play on 5th December when I meet up with some London Based Rugby Talkers/Keoites.
Before any of us ask about fatigue et al, just remember that money talks and bullshit is used as excuses after losing to the Frogs.
Question: how much will the tired Matfield, the injured FDP and Burger and the out of sorts Paksla be paid for this game?
Cant wait for this game! 4man has my tickets…its gonna be great!
Go Babaas!
