It was not only a busy week in South African rugby, it was indeed busy all over the World. Here’s a short summary of news from around the rugby globe. We discuss from Guinness Premiership to Currie Cup First Division to Super 14 to World Cup Preparation to Currie Cup Premier Division Log to European Challange Cup to French Top 14.

Guinness Premiership Round 5 Results:

Saracens went back to the top of the Premiership with a 22-15 win at Newcastle on Sunday.

Wasps held off a brave fightback from Northampton as they got back on track with a 20-15 success.

Mike Tindall created one try and scored another as Gloucester ended a dismal run of three successive losses and condemned bottom club Leeds to a 26-10 defeat.

On Saturday, Leicester beat Worcester 19-14.

On Saturday, Harlequins edged past Bath 13-11.

London Irish won 11-8 at Sale on Friday.

Currie Cup First Division semi-Finalists:

The 2009 Currie Cup First Division semifinalists have been confirmed:

The Pumas will host the Mighty Elephants in Witbank.

The SWD Eagles will host the Griffons in George.

The Eagles secured the crucial second position on the log and a home semifinal following their 18-16 victory over the Elephants at Outeniqua Park on Saturday evening.

In Welkom, the Pumas suffered their first defeat of the season after the Griffons shocked the log leaders to win 35-24 on Saturday. The result had no impact on the log and ensured that the visitors end the season in pole position in the competition.

In the other First Division match of the weekend, the Border Bulldogs secured their second victory of the season by defeating the Valke 39-15 in a bottom-of-the-log clash in East London on Saturday. The Valke also failed to win any fixtures in the competition this year.

Brumbies get new kit sponsor:

KooGa Australia will fit out the CA Brumbies as jersey and apparel partners from 2010.

The Australian owned and operated organisation will join Brumbies Rugby as commercial partners for the next four years, providing team kit and uniforms for the CA Brumbies as well as the official range of supporter merchandise.

The KooGA brand kick-started as a rugby apparel provider in the United Kingdom and services English Premiership clubs Harlequins and Saracens, as well as top line Welsh clubs Llanelli RFC, Ospreys, and Swansea.

In Australia, KooGa supply the Newcastle Knights and Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League and have recently announced they will be official apparel suppliers to the Wallabies and Queensland Reds from 2010.

All Blacks to start World Cup build up in the Northern Hemisphere:

With the final whistle of their 2009 Tri-Nations campaign still ringing in their ears the All Blacks looked north and singled out France in particular to begin tuning up for the 2011 World Cup.

After beating the Wallabies 33-6 a couple of weeks ago to bag second place behind the Springboks in the Tri-Nations, the All Blacks were keen to put a disappointing southern-hemisphere season behind them.

The six-match, end-of-year, tour would be a chance for players to play their way into the World Cup selection frame, Henry told reporters.

In recent years, France have earned a reputation as New Zealand’s bogey team having tipped them out of the 1999 World Cup semi-finals and 2007 World Cup quarter-finals as well as squaring a two-Test series in New Zealand in June.

Although several veteran All Blacks failed to measure up to their usual high standards this year, Henry dismissed suggestions the northern tour would be a chance to blood new players.

Henry said All Blacks certain to miss the northern hemisphere tour because of injury are hooker Keven Mealamu, lock Ali Williams and centre Richard Kahui.

Tour schedule:
Oct 31: v Australia, Tokyo
Nov 7: v Wales, Cardiff
Nov 14: v Italy, Milan
Nov 21: v England, London
Nov 28: v France, Marseille
Dec 5: v Barbarians, London

Ewen McKenzie ready to take Reds reigns:

Ewen McKenzie says that he is ready to hit the ground running as Reds coach and warned they risked being further destabilised by seeking an interim appointment.

The Reds are expected to announce Phil Mooney’s successor for 2010 in the next two weeks and McKenzie has been tipped for the job after meeting chairman Rod McCall.

McKenzie scoffed at claims that he would be a risky appointment after being sacked last month by French club Stade Francais and after he left the Waratahs last year.

Three Teams qualify for Currie Cup semi’s:

And then there were five.

The narrow two-point loss of the Golden Lions at the hands of the Sharks in Durban on Saturday evening put paid to the their Currie Cup semifinal hopes, and also ensured that the Blue Bulls will now have to play their semifinal and a possible final – should they advance that far – away from Loftus.

The inability of the Sharks to gain a bonus point against the Lions sees them drop to second place on the log by virtue of Western Province’s better points differential.

The Lions’ defeat also has the effect that the two log leaders plus the Blue Bulls who have moved ahead of Griquas, are now assured of places in the semifinals.

The remaining spot is dependant on this coming weekend’s results in the final round of this year’s competition. Griquas and Free State Cheetahs are still both in the running.

The log standings after the penultimate round with the points differentials in parenthesis are:

Western Province 49 (+221)
Sharks 49 (+178)
Blue Bulls 41 (+139)
Griquas 39 (-28)
Cheetahs 35 (+160)
Lions 33 (+97)
Leopards 6 (-287)
Boland 5 (-480)

European Cup Challenge fixtures released:

The fixtures, dates and kick-off times for the new-look European Challenge Cup, which from this season will see three Heineken Cup teams competing in the knock-out stages of the tournament have been announced by tournament organisers ERC.

Full broadcast schedules will be announced shortly.

Clermont lead Top 14:

Defending champions Perpignan slipped to fourth place in the Top 14 after suffering a 27-12 loss away to Biarritz on Saturday.

Clermont moved atop the league with a bonus-point 38-13 victory over Bayonne.

Castres went into second after edging a 21-19 thriller against Toulon.

Fourth-placed Toulouse registered a 30-12 win over Montpellier, a result that left the latter in trouble one spot off the foot of the table.

Racing-Metro moved into mid-table comfort with a 17-12 win over Montauban, while fellow Parisian side Stade Francais handed Brive a 44-16 thrashing on Friday.

In the late game, Bourgoin beat bottom-placed club Albi 26-16.

    Goodmorning. Just got back home. Congrats to Sharks, Bulls, Western Province and one more – Grikwas/Cheetahs on making the semi’s.

    My beloved Munster – well rather no comment.

  • 2

    Oops Janeworld

  • 3

    Helloooooooooooooooooo

  • 4

    Helllllooooooooo

  • 5

    @Irish Devil – 1

    Howdy Irish,

    Thanks for the congrats Sharks were really poor this weeekend. Then a win is a win. We really needed the 5 points to stay top of the log. Hoping we get the 5 points this Saturday against Griquas.

    Never saw Munster. We don’t get all the NH games. Remember thats my team too up there. How did they do? Did JdV play?

  • 6

    @grootblousmile – 3

    Hello boeta? You recovered from you huge hangover? :laugh:

  • 7

    @Puma

    Munster lost badly to Leister – JdV was a bit hmmmm rusty. I read the Sharks were lucky to win – but a win is a win. They say their decision making was very poor.

  • 8

    @Irish Devil – 7

    Sorry about Munster. JdV will be a bit rusty but he is a class player and should pick it up.

    Sharks were trying for the 5 points and playing some stupid rugby. Running from everywhere. Should have slowed it down a bit go for the win and probably we would have played better and who knows maybe the 5 point may have come.

    We are without Smit, Deysel and Muller. Especially to be without Deysel makes a huge difference.

    Geluk aan al die wen spanne: WP, Sharks, Bulle en Cheetahs alhoewel die Leeus ook n geluk verdien. Hulle het amper gewen in die tank!
    WP gaan hard moet werk vir 5 punte op Ellis Park en so ook die Sharks in Kimberley. Bulle het nie veel om voor te speel nie.

  • 10

    @Supa Die Bloubul – 9

    How you Supa? Hope well boet.

    Ja, Sharks were very poor this weekend but a win is a win. Would have liked us to get the bonus but in the end I was just pleased we won..hehe. It was too close for me. Heart stopping stuff which should never have been.

    If Sharks don’t get the bonus this weekend then it looks like a Sharks/Bulls semi. Pity wanted our teams to play in the final. Its like seeing the final before the final so to speak if that happens.

    Sharks are missing Deysel huge and Smit.

  • 11

    Sharks will get their 5 Points this weekend, but I’m not so sure the WP will.

    Both the Bulls and the Cheetahs will get their 5 points.

    So, my prediction is still as follows:

    1. Sharks 54 Log Points
    2. WP 53 Log Points
    3. Bulls 46 Log Points
    4. Cheetahs 40 Log Points and a superior Points difference over Griquas
    5. Griquas 39 Log Points

    @grootblousmile – 11

    GBS you just made my day boet. I really hope your crystal ball is spot on with my Sharkies..hehe :-))

  • 13

    11@grootblousmile – Noooooooooooooooo, we need the WP to be at the top of the log so that the Cheetahs can beat them again.

  • 14

    @grootblousmile – Halloooooo almal

    Dink nie die Sharks gaan 5 kry nie teen kwas op hulle tuisveld nie……sal wen maar nie bonus kry nie…..

    Dink die leeutjies gaan WP net net wen so WP gaan 1 punt kry

    Dink Bulls gaan 5 kry

    So volgens my gaan die log so lyK
    Sharks 53
    WP 50
    Bulls 46
    Griquas 40

    Sharks vs Bulls
    WP vs Griqus

    Dan Bulls vs WP Final hehehehe

  • 15

    What is this European Challange Cup thing? I don’t know a Pedi word for it so as a competition it cannot exist.

  • 16

    Dis natuurlik alles as as as…..

    Kan WP vs Cheetas semi

    Dalk Bulls vs Cheetahs final

    Who knows? :party:

  • 17

    @Loosehead – #15

    Bwaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaha

  • 18

    @Tripples – 14

    Tripples you too are making my day. Sharks right on top….hehehe. Would be very happy if that how it end this weekend.

    Really want a Bulls/Sharks final. Damn we may have to play each other in the Semi. That will be a huge pity.

    Lions hope they are at their best on the weekend. My 2nd team better play well against WP.

  • 19

    @Puma – #18

    Also hope the Lions do it, also my 2nd team…..

  • 20

    @Tripples – #19 Donbt tell K9 though cos he is very very RUDE about the Bulls and us their supporters 🙁 🙁

  • 21

    @Puma – You are going to play the Bulls in the semi’s, unless the Sharks “allow” the Griquas 2 bonus points?

  • 22

    10@Puma

    Morning Puma. Flippen cold and wet here today! I dont think all is lost. The Lions wont just roll over and hand the WP 5 points. I think the Sharks will still top the table. If not, its going to be one helluva battle in the Tank next week!!

  • 23

  • 24

    23@Tripples

    More, ek dink WP gaa wen, maar sonder n bonuspunt. Sharks gan 5 kry in Kimberley. Ek hoop die Cheetahs maak die semis.

  • 25

    @Loosehead – 21

    How do we allow them 2 bonus points………hehehe.

  • 26

    @Supa Die Bloubul – 22

    Ja, I think the cold weather will be coming now in the NH. We have had lots of rain here too. I wont complain. The winter was long and dry.

    I hope we get the 5 points. Otherwise it is going to be a huge, huge battle at the tank next week. DAMN want a Bulls/Sharks final. For me its as good as watching the Boks/ABs. So lets hope my 2nd team the Lions give WP a tough game on Sat.

  • 27

    @Puma – Buggers. I won’t tell you.

  • 28

    @Puma – Morning Puma, Tripples and anyone else online.

    Watched the Bath/Harlequin game and i must say i enjoyed the rugby, was very intense specially the 6 minutes in overtime when the quins were trying to get over the line.

  • 29

    Griquas will initially come with everything they have against the Sharks… but they simply do not have what it takes to trouble the Sharks.

    In the Tank the Sharks beat the Kwas by a huge margin, without their Bokke… in Kimberley it will be no different with their Bokke back….

    Sharks will get their 5 Log points.

  • 30

    @Treehugger – Hi, I watched the 2nd 1/2 last night and really enjoyed it. What worries me is that Michael Claasens, who must be one of the worst Boks ever, actually looked good playing for Bath.
