A Lions rugby player has allegedly bitten Francois Louw of Western Province in Saturday’s Curry Cup clash between the two teams in the Coketin. The Lions won the match 27-25.

Nobody had been cited by yesterday, but the South African Rugby Union’s legal manager, Christo Ferreira, confirmed an investigation was under way.

“The citing officer (Andy Prior) is waiting for additional footage,” said Ferreira.

Western Province coach Allister Coetzee was very unhappy with the incident.

“There are two bite marks on Francois’s forearm. It’s out of our control … it is clear on video,” said Coetzee.

“I can’t believe a player can stoop to that level,” he said.

The bitemark was shown to news24 at O R Tambo airport on Sunday.

Prior said there would “probably” be a citing but the broadcast footage is apparently unclear.

The Sharks have confirmed that Du Plessis has suffered a rib cartilage injury that will almost certainly rule him out of the play-ff game and could also make him doubtful for any potential final. It is a massive blow for the Sharks, as Du Plessis has been a talismanic presence for the Sharks front five since returning to the mix.

Bok loosehead Beast Mtawarira also appeared to be struggling at times in the Griquas game, and this could be problematic for the Sharks as the front-row is their strong-point. Plumtree will also recall that John Smit struggled when he came on at tighthead against the Cheetahs in the recent league game.

While it is true that the Sharks have eight Springboks who took part in the Tri-Nations, a closer look shows that several of those players were reserves, and four of them were front row forwards. The Sharks appear to have struggled to reabsorb those Boks and, although they were good in the first half against Griquas, their ragged second half might have offered the Cheetahs hope.

The Cheetahs will go to Durban knowing that they have made a habit in the past of ruining the Sharks party in semifinals, a trend that dates back to the 1997 playoff match in Durban, where the Sharks started as overwhelming favourites but were beaten convincingly. Plumtree clearly knows this, as can be gauged from what he said to reporters on Saturday night.

“My mind flicks straight away to the Cheetahs and how they have hurt us in the past,” said Plumtree.

“We have the opportunity to host a home final, which is awesome for everyone in the province, but at the end of the day the Cheetahs are in front of us and you can’t look past a side that has come in through the back door when they looked out of the competition. They will be hugely determined.”

Plumtree has a point there – although the Cheetahs will be regarded as the weakest of the four teams to reach the semis, they are also the team with the least to lose after making the playoffs by recovering from a fourmatch sequence of defeats at the start of the competition.
