Jonathan Kaplan, the world’s most capped Test referee, has been appointed to referee the 2009 Currie Cup Final. Marius Jonker and Mark Lawrence have been appointed to the Currie Cup seminal and Craig Joubert the First Division Final – all four amongst the very top referees in the world.
Only 24 referees have refereed Currie Cup Finals since 1939. It remains the most sought-after match in South Africa for players and referees, ranking higher than many, many Tests. Kaplan for example has refereed more than ten times as many Tests as Currie Cup Finals.
This will be Kaplan’s fifth Final, putting him third on the list of referees who have refereed most Finals. AndrΓ© Watson with seven heads the lost followed by Steve Strydom on six. Kaplan will now pull level with Freek Burger on five.
Jimmy Smith Belton is next on three, while Piet Robbertse, Gert Bezuidenhout and Johan Gouws each refereed two Finals. The other 16 did one each.
Kaplan referees his first Final in 2002 when the Golden Lions played the Blue Bulls. Now he will have refereed four of the last five. He did not referee the Final in 2007 when he stayed longer at the World Cup than some others did.
Kaplan is delighted at the appointment which affirms his position as the top referee in South Africa.
Marius Jonker, who comes from Richard’s Bay at the top of Zululand will, referee the first seminal, the one between the Sharks and the Cheetahs in Durban while Mark Lawrence, who refereed the 2007 Currie Cup Final, will referee the semifinal at Newlands when the Blue Bulls play Western Province.
For the second time Craig Joubert, who this year refereed two Bledisloe Cup matches will referee the First Division Final between the Pumas and South Western Districts.
@bdb –
:laugh:
@bdb – eks so vinnig hier.
@ k9 so n bek kort jam
@bdb – 30
@smallies72 – 22 Hi Smallies, I don’t watch much T.V….Like off the wall comedy,and a good murder drama thats about it!
@smallies72 – 27 I agree with you. One of the most interesting things is that most of the dialogue is ad libbed. Larry David just provides the other actors with an outline & they go from there. When I first started to watch the show a few years ago the actors seemed hesitant with their lines, which was odd. Until I heard about the ad libbing. So they never really know what he is about to say. I imagine shooting the show must be a lot of fun, with them cracking up all the time. π
@K9-MonsterLeeu – 28…… ‘BOO’……. – Did that burst your staples???
@K9-MonsterLeeu – 33
As dit gebeur gaan julle sukkel om my nugter te kry voor die afskop van die finale!! :liquor: :drink: :beer:
34@ gbs ek ok baie beter as vista en nogal steady
@JimT – Hi Jim, no not on the BBC yet….I could do with a good laugh!!
@carol – 37 This is one you have to watch Carol. Especially if you have an appreciation of NY/LA Jewish sterotypes. No subject is taboo on this show. π
@carol – haha no it didnt. No Angelina Jolie in the movie π
@grootblousmile – Don’t get struck by lightning…. :thunder:
Is everything plugged into the anti surge thingie….?
38@ jim t he gave us seinfelt also but curb is better
@JimT – 45 The women always seem to get the best lines on those sort of shows!
@carol – 43 I watch little TV except political talk shows & sports. But there are a few shows I watch “Curb” is one, “Rescue Me” another(a mix of drama & comedy with NY firefighters) & “Mad Men” (this I find interesting because it’s a period piece of America about 9 years before I arrived myself. Fascinating how things have changed.)
@K9-MonsterLeeu – 47 I thought we had decided before that Angelina has a problem with her lips!!
Or do you not really focus on her pout? :silly:
@JimT – I enjoy Mad Men.
@carol – Geez…u have quite a memory. Not bad for a 43 year old π
55@KingPaul – LOL Jou :clown: !
@carol – 51 Not in this case. He brings on to the show many LA/Hollywood actors playing themselves, which adds another dimension to the comedy. I think it’s one of those shows you love it or hate it, no in between.
