This is a MUST READ. The sometimes controvercial Media24 Sports writer has all WP supporters up in arms about an Article he has written comparing WP as “The Bafana Bafana of Rugby”… here is an extract from his Article, as taken from Sport24.

The Article starts off with a long-winded story about Eric Rush… but let’s cut to the chase of the Article, here it is:

***************************************

Something that is not one man’s opinion, though, are the SA Rugby Player Award nominations that were released yesterday. The SA rugby media share their nominations in the various categories, so it was a shock to see some of the names presented in some of the categories.

For the full list of nominees, CLICK HERE (link removed)…

Sure, one needs to accept the view of the majority, but some of those are beyond belief. For example: Team of the year – Western Province. What? How on earth did that happen?

I can understand the nomination of the Springboks, the Bok sevens side, the Bulls and Griquas. All have won something this year and actually have a trophy cabinet to prove it. But Western Province? Is finishing second in Currie Cup now the new first? Are WP the Bafana Bafana of rugby? Why not the Sharks if you wanted to use the Currie Cup as yardstick?

We have enough greatness in our game and enough teams who perform on a regular basis. There is no need to reward mediocrity.

Similar with the nominations for Currie Cup player of the year. We have three players from WP along with Sarel Pretorius and Stefan Terblanche. Really?

Juan de Jongh has certainly improved a lot and has become a very prominent player, Joe Pietersen played some good rugby, and Luke Watson scored a lot of tries from the back of the Province maul, but how on earth did they get nominated ahead of some very deserving players from the Sharks, Bulls, Lions and Cheetahs?

It is great to see Province finally making it into the top four as they have the potential and pedigree to be there all the time. But three of the top five Currie Cup players from one team? Again, are we rewarding second best? Has WP become the Bafana Bafana of rugby?

Some of the other categories will be closely fought. Fourie du Preez should be player of the year, but what a season for both Morné Steyn and Heinrich Brüssow! They certainly deserve a lot of credit for their first full seasons in Test rugby.

One could have easily nominated five more Boks, though. Jaque Fourie will be in the race for try of the year for his late try against the Lions in Pretoria. His name deserves to be in the player of the year category as well, but it’s not.

I thought Bismarck du Plessis had the best season of his life, but he was not nominated at all. Du Plessis was colossal in the Lions series and established himself as the best hooker in the world during the Tri Nations. He made numerous crucial turnovers during the season, was spot-on with his lineouts, and has often been a tower of strength in the Bok pack. He deserves to be there.

But then, that is only one man’s opinion!

Morne Steyn het sedert Mei feitlik op water geloop.

    Hy het nie net met vier skepdoele die Crusaders in die halfeindstryd van die Super14 feitlik eiehandig gesink nie;
    sy skop in

In fact, statistics show that WP have the strongest scrum in South Africa. According to Fair Play’s statistics, WP win 94,5 percent of their scrum feeds.

It is a better figure than any other provincial team in South Africa and includes all Currie Cup games, a friendly match against Eastern Province and a clash with the British and Irish Lions.

The Bulls win 87 percent of their feed and have conceded six heels against the head against the two of Western Province.

That is why any attempt to trash the WP scrum will not be taken seriously.

  • 102

@superBul – Province have also received 13 penalties and free kicks – more than any other team – on their opponents’ feed and conceded 26, among which only nine are penalties. On average, therefore, WP do not concede a penalty per match.

The Bulls have picked a stronger pack this week than was the case for their previous two matches against WP in this year’s Currie Cup.

“As far as I’m concerned, scrumming is not about individuals, but a collective,” said Proudfoot, who has played a big role in establishing the WP scrum as a formidable unit.

“Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield will give the Bulls’ scrum that collective feel. Our pack is settled and we had our best scrumming session of the year this week. I’m happy with the pack’s progress.”

What a weekend of Currie Cup rugby! Wow, i am converted. Now I am all sure that you know about my pathetic bet with SPECTRE that if Province beat the bulls i would dedicate a full blog posting to the brilliance of PROVINCE. But that SPECTRE guy is pure genius! Not only did he call that PROVINCE would beat a full strength springbok laden Super 14/ Tri nations winning side against all odds, but they humiliated the bulls to such a degree that i am embarrassed to have ever even been associated with them! I am a true PROVINCE supporter now after they taught not just me, but the rugby world how to play a full encompassing 15 man game that included all the skills of a Fijian 7’s team as they ran the feeble bulls team around the glorious Newlands!

Where do i begin? Lets start at the back. Anyone remember Christian Cullen? Well, PROVINCE have unearthed the next great player to soon be wearing no 15 for the Boks! Joe Pietersen’s all round running, kicking, passing and defensive skills are outstanding! And you can swear that the combination of Welsh and Habana is already taken off, and perhaps they are going to room together next year the way Habana gifted Welsh the easiest of scores while attempting yet another interception. And Gio has shown exactly what a World Champion 7’s star is all about. And that centre pairing? It seems that Fourie might just be spending some more time on the bench next year after Paul Bosch and Juan de Jongh combined as if they shared a womb to set up some of the more scintillating tries seen in this competitions history come semi final time! And all the talk about that wonder boot Steyn, yes, and he did kick your teams only points with 3 penalties and a drop (although that charge down by Bekker can be seen as something of a score, although more like an own goal), and what a game for Grant to come of age and show exactly the brilliance that has long been his reputation and perform on the greatest stages, a semi final against a putrid bulls team. And sure, Du Preez tried his heart out, and once again stood head and shoulders above his team mates, but the quality ball Dewaldt Duvenhage recieved from his superior pack really set him up for what must be one of the greatest half back showings this millenium!

And if we look at the packs, Poor old Spies was taken off after 30 minutes (was heard to be crying, something about Luke kicking sand in his eye) for what has become the norm for one of the countries most overrated no 8’s. The Loose ball was arrogantly stolen from the bulls, something akin to stealing biltong from an overweight bulls supporter (and watching him try to chase the nimble footed theif with hilarious results, watch the highlights). And so much was said about the lock pairing, so much though that i think they even began to believe that all they had to do was pitch up. How wrong. Bekker not only repeatedly stole lineout possesion, but started blowing kisses to Bakkies who once again found himself taking another ten minute rest on the sidelines.

I think the front rows deserve a special mention. Well, the Province front row that is, because the bulls are still trying to find daylight after their heads were shoved so far up their own rectums that i seriously think that they should introduce a tap out policy for submission come scrum time!

So PROVINCE, so brilliant were you, i have decided to finally get that dirty tattoo of a bull on either side of my butt cheeks removed and replaced by blue and white stripes across my heart! And SPECTRE, how could i ever have doubted your genius?

And a final mention must go to one of the best Captains of all time, the humble, meticulous, gracious, perfect, well bred, sophisticated, stylish, inspired, exceptional, extraordinary, incomparable Luke Watson! And may the whole country sink to their knees as you hoist the Currie Cup and take your rightful place and forever etch your greatness in blue bull history by defeating the so called “undefeatables” at newlands 17 October 2009 semi finals on route to the Currie Cup!

So Jakes, being the nice guy i am, and knowing how difficult it is going to be for you just getting up on Monday morning let alone still having to write about PROVINCE’S vastly superior team, i thought i would help you out, so just copy and paste the above and we will call it even. Ha ha ha…..

Eh… can’t blame you for having supreme confidence in WP, but jeez, leave the pre-match gloating to the favourites. I’m a WP fan since I was 7 (in ’87) and one of the Die Hards, but come on, you’re taking it a bit too far.

  • 110

    @Pietman
Sorry, 80 kg, dit was Cullen se liggaamsgewig.
En dan maak die ouens n moosa bohaai oor Luke Watson wat 120 kg bench press.
