The Vodacom Blue Bulls’ Springbok trio of Bakkies Botha, Victor Matfield and Fourie du Preez will celebrate their 50th appearance for the Blue Bulls when they play against the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in the Absa Currie Cup final on Saturday.
Courtecy of the Bulls web site:
Du Preez has actually played his 50th match for the Union in the semi-final against Western Province, but the Blue Bulls’ custom is to celebrate your half century at Loftus Versfeld.
The trio will lead the team on Saturday and it goes without saying that these three superstars have played an enormous role in the Blue Bulls’ success over the last couple of years.
Botha started his provincial career with the Valke in 1999 and two years later, in 2001, he started playing for the Blue Bulls. He made his Super Rugby as well as Springbok debut in 2002 and has ever since played in 63 tests for South Africa.
He also holds the world record with his good friend Victor Matfield for most tests as a lock combination in the starting line-up (53).
Matfield first played for the Blue Bulls as a 20 year old in 1998 and after representing the Griquas in 1999 and 2000 he was again contracted by his beloved Union in 2001.
Matfield is a veteran of 89 tests and he has already captained the Boks in ten tests.
Du Preez, who is a couple of years younger than Matfield and Botha, made his provincial debut for the Blue Bulls in 2001 and after first tasting Super Rugby in 2003 he played his first test for South Africa in 2004. He has since then starred in 52 tests for our country.
The Blue Bulls would like to use this opportunity to congratulate Bakkies, Victor and Fourie with their achievement and we would like to thank them for their colossal contribution.
Thanks for what you have done over the years and all the best for Saturday!
You are world class heroes and an inspiration to thousands of supporters.
These 3 Players are special players and a huge amount of the success of the Bulls, Blue Bulls and the Bokke MUST be attributed to these 3.
Respect…. respect !
Superb players, all three of them.
Best in the world
Can but echo what was allready said!
SA teams don’t perform well when there’s a lot of emotion involved.
This is more bad than good for Flou Bulls I’m afraid.
It’s rare to find 3 such good players in 1 era, never mind in one team.
What will be left of the Bulls though when their gone?
Ludicrace himself admitted that he is really doing the minimum with the Bulls, these 3 players the reason why.
Dare I say that there is not a couch in SA with knowledge enough in these 3 positions to couch these guys?
These guys could teach JW a few tricks to include in his winning ways workshops for couches.
Jeez, I sound like a Flou Bulls supporter.
Excuse me while I go through up quickly…………
If I was a Bulls supporter I’d be a little nervous about these distractions.
Which year was it that the Lions klapped the Sharks at Kings park in the Currie Cup final where the pre-match celebration of Mac’s last game and Teich’s something something and A N Others something took place…
Pasopa!
