Western Province hosted the GWK Griquas in their second round Currie Cup match. The match was won by WP with an impressive 5 try haul, even though it was played in a wet, wet, mud bath. WP won 43 / 3.
To say it rained at Newlands would be an understatement, there was deep water underfoot and a lot of splashing. Typical weather that would make attactive rugby an impossibility.
One often wondered whether somebody would start doing breast stroke or back stroke or at least need a snorkle and some goggles.
Yet somehow WP scored 5 tries and Joe Petersen was dead-eye Dick with his place kicking.
From the start it was clear that WP handled the wet weather much better than Griquas, their handling was awesome for wet weather. Griquas on the other hand, with Naas Olivier leading the soggy Griquas chorus made countless handling mistakes and often lost the ball in contact.
Griquas never looked like scoring tries.
In the first miute WP scored through a penalty converted by Joe Petersen then followed it up with further penalties on 16, 20 and 23 minutes into the game.
Then followed a yellow card awarded against Jonathan Mokoena. In ensuing play Brock Harris scored WP’s first try. It was now 19 /0 after 27 minutes.
Naas Olivier was successful wih his first penalty after 32 minutes, making the score 19 / 3.
On 35 minutes Joe Petersen crossed the white line for WP’s 2nd try.
Half Time the score was WP 24 / 3
Although the rain had abated a bit after Half Time, the ball was a cake of soap and a dour period in the match ensued.
Eventually a very strong-running Duane Vermeulen broke the scoring-drought and forced his way over the try-line from 5m out and suddenly the score had ballooned to 31 / 3.
The WP bonus point for tries was duly earned with a Frikkie Welsch try on 74 minutes.
That was not the end though, Pieter Louw still had to rub more salt into the Griquas wounds, with a try, which when converted brought an end to the game.
Well done to WP with their 5-point haul in conditions that did not suit try-scoring rugby.
WP has now moved up to 44 Log Points and are assured of a semi-final spot.
Points:
WP: 4 Penalties Joe Petersen & 2 Conversions, 1 Conversion Peter Grant, Try Brock Harris & Joe Petersen & Duane Vermeulen & Frikkie Welsch & Pieter Louw

Northern Cape vs Western Cape, no contest!
Delwers en Kalaharimanne te sterk, kyk uit vir WP-geelkaarte vandag by die afbreek, Francois Louw loop eerste 😉
@Pietman – Die Wee Pee, gaan verloor, ek hoop.
Griqua :soldier: het die skietgoed
Go Kwas, although I think that the WP will win.
@Loosehead – 4 Good luck to you and your team for 17h00
Hmmm let’s see if WP will once again (as so many times this season) go about their own business, and dash the hopes of so many……
Haven’t seen any arrogant statements from WP or their true fans this season.
If Kwas win, we will say” well played Kwas”
If WP wins, we won’t say much; we will look northwards and simply smile……………… 🙂
@rugbybal –
Ek verwag daai ding….
Klink nie of dit reen in die Kaap nie, so dis lekker Griekwaweer :drool:
@SA Barbarians – Thanks SA B. Waht is the air like there at the top of the log?
Freestaters must support the WP today, no points for the Kwas.
Weather update from Cape Town: cold, windy and about to rain.
@Loosehead –
Thx.
So, you expect rain during the course of the game then?
@Loosehead –
Ek het twee keer op Nuweland in die reen gesit en kyk hoe die Staat wen teen WP, daai binnelandse ouens sien min reen, so hulle raak heel uitbundig as dit reen lyk my!
@Pietman – The way things are now it may already be raining at Newlands. It is :-(( outside.
@Pietman – Daar was ‘n semi finaal ‘n paar jaar gelede toe De Waal die Vrystaat tot die wen geskop het.
I was there that day in the Zevenwacht Box, they tell me that I really enjoyed the game.
@Loosehead –
Zevenwacht se box, gelukkige blikskottel!
Ek kan net dink watse lekker sap daar moet wees….
6@SA Barbarians – Exactly, I see the self appointed rugby gurus think otherwise and are arrogant, we’ll just wait and see.
I think WP is going to make, but it is always difficult for me to chose, Griquas is my 2nd team.
@Boerboel – Howzit? I think that the WP are going to snot klap the Griquas.
@Loosehead – Howzit Loosedhead, I am still on cruches :pissedoff:
@Boerboel – Move the beer fridge and drinks cabinet closer to the TV.
@Loosehead – It is the good Durbanville Chardonay that got me onto the crutches in the first place
@Boerboel – 😆
I almost fell over after drink a little to much Diemersdal Sav Blanc the other night.
Middag middag….
Weather update: The rain she has started to fall.
Just like Boerboel did the other night. 🙂
@Loosehead – I wanted to show my grandson how to place kick a rugby ball, the ball is still there, didn’t move a bit! :reallypissed:
Ek verkies die ou smileys……die enigste een wat ek hier laaik is :poop:
@K9-MonsterLeeu – Middag K9.
24@K9-MonsterLeeu – Die kleur is net verkeerd!
Soooo….vir wie sal ek hier ondersteun?
@Pietman – ons sit elke aand die sprayers aan as daar in die kaap gespeel gaan word en oefen in die “reen”
