Coach John Plumtree says that Ruan Pienaar will be used at scrumhalf for the Sharks for the rest of the Currie Cup.Plumtree, relieved after the log-leading Sharks edged out the challenging Free Staters 24-13 at King’s Park on Saturday evening, said it was time the some order and stability returned to Pienaar’s rugby life.
Pienaar has been shunted between scrumhalf, flyhalf and fullback for the Springboks and his rugby has suffered. Bok coach Peter de Villiers reportedly said at the weekend that he still regarded Pienaar as South Africa’s best flyhalf although he has been replaced by Morne Steyn and his prodigious boot.
Pienaar wants to be a scrumhalf and Plumtree is happy to accommodate him.
“Ruan needs to start feeling good about his game and the game of rugby again. Circumstances (an injury to Juan Martin Hernandez) may result in him having to play at flyhalf again but the plan at the moment is to use at scrumhalf.”
Pienaar took over from Charl McLeod at scrumhalf against Free State and he became increasingly more influential as the Sharks resisted a strong Cheetahs’ revival to win.
Plumtree said he had heard not a word from the Springnok coaching staff about Pienaar.
“They all on holiday, aren’t they? he asked with a smile. “I’m working.”
Very wise move Jan!
Pity. The search for a SA Dan Carter continues 🙁

@K9-MonsterLeeu – sal n sa morney steyn eerder vat
@smallies72 – nee wat. Hyt net ‘n skopvoet.
K9, I agree with you. He really has the raw talent to be a memorable no 10.
But ok, if wants to play at no 9 then so be it. Select and let him play there and let him battle his way past FdP – if he can.

What happens to Ruan remains a disappointment
“Pienaar wants to be a scrumhalf and Plumtree is happy to accommodate him.”
Ruan is a 9, just like Frans is a 10 and Earl is a has been.
4@smallies72 –
Jy is mal. Dan Carter is miljoen keer beter as Morne Steyn.
@vanStraaten – net so!!!
7@fender –
He’s 25 he’s not going to develop anymore. He’s too slow off the mark. Defense is not the strongest, watch it he’ll be back to his less 75% accuracy goal-kicking in the Super 14 next year.
#16 vanStraaten
Please note that I was talking about raw talent. Kicking is something he can develop – if the desire is there, of course.
Also, players develop as long as they want to irrespective of age. If not, how do you explain Percy (pre and post Wales) and even the Sharks’ Terblanche?
17@fender –
Sorry Fender thought you were referring to Morne Steyn for some reason… Pienaar already have all the skills, but the main reason for him not getting close to his potential is the fact that they mess him around so much. They should be playing him fly-half now. He’s still part of Peter de Villiers’ plans.
You’re not going to develop a running game if you don’t have it as a youngster, Morne doesn’t have it. He doesn’t have it. Pienaar is a good goal kicker, all he needs to find is consistency and the only way to develop that is giving that responsibility to him. Pienaar is a great runner with ball in hand, with Jacques-Louis Potgieter leaving the Cheetahs I actually think Pienaar should go to the Cheetahs. Yes he’ll compete with Naas Olivier in the Super 14, but they’ll give him ample opportunities to develop.
@bdb – Net weer n ou wat alles wat Blou is moet in twyfel trek.
@Loosehead – 13
How you mate, I think Frans Steyn is a 15 and yes Ruan is a 9. Heard that PdV still wants Ruan to play at FH though. Now see Plum will play Ruan at scrumhalf. Well at least if that keeps Ruan happy and in SA I have no problems with that. Just that we have Kockott at the Sharks too. Big headache there I think.
19@bdb –
Dan Carter came back from a 6 month lay-off. He still does things that Morne Steyn can’t dream of doing.
I recognize Burton’s talent. He’ve got some of the important skills and those that aren’t there he can still develop. I recognize talent, but I can be wrong about Burton. That’s the difference between me and you, I’m willing to make mistakes to find the best, you’ll settle for dead plain boring average.
@Puma – Kockott is nr 3 scrummy at Sharks currently…or is he?
If so, he’s on he’s way somewhere else as we speak and I’ve got a feeling he’ll rather change countries, than province. Pitty.
😉
@bdb –
Ruan is a scrummie, always has been, and always will be.
He was Morne’s scrummie in the Cravens, btw.
Sit DC of MS bv in ‘n B en I Lions span op losskakel.
Tussen DC en MS? Well, ek sal nie nie ‘n moer teen DC wil speel nie.
26@Pietman – ja, hy is in my boeke ‘n skitterende skrummie, en ‘n gemiddelde losskakel.
@bdb – Mmmmm ek hoor jou.
