I don’t really understand rugby in the Western Province but none the less…they have secured the services of young Australian flyhalf Matt Toomua for the rest of the Currie Cup.

WHO?!  Oh he made his Super14 debut as an 18-year-old for the Brumbies against the Hurricanes last year, played a few games for the Brumbies this year and if the papers can be believed, could be a shock inclusion in WP’s squad for Saturday’s Currie Cup clash against Griquas at Newlands.

Apparently Peter Grant will start but Conrad Hoffmann will play a club game there this week.  This all follows the news that Willem de Waal will be sidelined for months rather than weeks for his neck injury.

Toomua captained Queensland at under-16 level and the pundits recon WP are gaining a player with good leadership abilities and an educated boot. Must be some leader to be regarded in such high regard at the tender age of 19!

Amongst contracting young players from Oz the management team also have some time to look at the weather for the weekend:

“The prediction earlier this week was that it would rain on Saturday, but now it looks as if we will be missing out on it. We are hoping for dry conditions so that we can play a bit,” said WP forwards coach Matt Proudfoot.

Maybe they should worry less about the weather, that will be the same for both teams, and concentrate on their opponents…
