The Lions have in all likelihood acquired the services of English lock Simon Shaw.
He has given his undertaking to the Lions that he will join them in next year’s Super 14 and Currie Cup. Shaw, who was part of the England World Cup winning squad in 2003 and part of the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa earlier this year, will bring much needed beef and a wealth of experience to the Lions squad.
Shaw, who stands at 2.03m, and tips the scale at 122kg, turned 36 three weeks ago.
He is a similiar player to Bakkies Botha and played a big part in the British and Irish Lions much improved forward performance in the second test against the Boks. Having the experience of winning a world cup in 2003 and playing in a second final in 2007, Shaw could possibly be the leadership that the Lions have been lacking in recent times. Shaw only needs to put pen to paper. This is expected to happen within the next couple of days.
Shaw has represented England 52 times.
This news comes just days after the Lions managed to contract Springbok wing Tonderai Chavanga.
ag :poop:
Shaw is 36 years old, he will be close to 37 at the end of next years S14.
Not sure about this signing. Is this the best that lions :coins: can buy?
Take :heart: It could be worse … they could have signed Tuquiri :liquor: :drink: :liquor: :drink: :liquor: :drink:
He’s the only lock in world rugby that has been able to match up to Bakkies in the last 12 months.
He may be old, but this guy is serious beef and can still play. We saw that in the Lions series.
Mmm, I must agree, he is a good lock, and an enforcer, something we need at the Lions, just hope that his age wont haunt us, but then look at Stefan Tereblance, Albert vd Berg, both 34+, and still plays good rugby.
He will bring with him experience, and loads of strengh to the scrum, rucks.
Will see how he is doing in the S14, if he deliver the goods, we might keep him for the CC.
Just hope that we dont loose Moore, and Snyman
Lions should have kept Anton van Zyl.
Given the stirling/Rand exchange rate, Shaw won’t come cheap, Anton might have stayed for the same money.
@Mr-T –
@Pietman – Anton wanted to go back to his roots, Not sure if it was because of the Lions poor performance and or office politics, but the bottom line is, he wanted to leave. BIG loss to the Lions, BIG gain for WP.
4 @ WilladieLeeu – The problem is that the S14 is a very hard and long competition. Now Shaw might be good and strong, but can he last 10 weeks at that intesity at the age of 36? I doubt it.
5 @ Mr-T – Stefan plays fullback, which is not nearly as physical as lock, and Albert plays of the bench most of the time.
I think it is a good signing.
Young locks can learn a lot under him and he can help with the overall development of the team.
The one thing the Lions seriously lacked in the recent past was experience.
Good signing.
@Pietman –
Hi Pieta!!!
More Pietman !
You ready for our “National Day” celebrations that take 10 days ? I just FedExed a letter to Beijing & was given an estimated delivery date of Oct 09th … yes FEDEX !! 🙄
Hey are you going to the game in Tokyo at the end of the month ? You could sneak across on one of those cigarette trafficking boats couldn’t you ?
@Snoek –
Agree with you, he might not hold the whole Super 14, but the knowledge and experience he brings is priceless. That’s what weve been lacking.
@Rugby_Princess –
Howdy Highness!
Celebrations?
I know nothing about it, tell me more pse.
We only have chuseok this Saturday, but that is not my kind of celebration, just some ancestor whorshipping stuff that I don’t partake in.
Terrible tsunami in Samoa, heh?
Hell, Asia is being hit by some heavy storms at the moment, VietNam had a big one last night as well.
What’s happening your side tsunami wise, you ok?
@Rugby_Princess – No, no Tokyo, I will be in Namibia by then hopefully :X-P:
@Pietman –
Ola Piet 🙂
The mother country (your neighbour) is celebrating her place in the world so life as we know it grinds to a halt 😉
Weekend before last we were invaded by Indonesians celebrating the end of Ramadan … apparently one does tht with liquor, whores & gambling – who knew ?
We have “Bone Dusting” at the end of the month where everyone gets a day off to clean the family crypt … Sounds like a fun family outing doesn’t it ?
Yes the situation is Samoa is dire … mother nature is not happy at the moment … earthqualkes left & right … enormous dust storms in downtiown Sydney … violent storms in Vietnam & the Philippines … when will we learn ?
Yeah we are okay here … goodness only knows what would happen here in the event of a Tsunami given that we are sitting on reclaimed land … doesn’t get closer to the sea than that ! I guess our “Emergency Plan” would be more of a stick your head between your legs & kiss your a*se goodbye kind of plan 😀
@Pietman –
Show off !
@WilladieLeeu –
I dont think this is a bad signing. Shaw was still playing well for the BIL a few months ago. Hard bugger. The Lions has to start somewhere.
To me it seems the Lions are on the right track. Lock is their weakest link amongst the forwards. What they need is game breakers, and Shaw just might do the job. And with Heinke back . . . .
@Pietman –
Grobbelaar? Daai witkop? Hy speel oorsee nou.
Interesting story this. May I ask what the source is?
@robdylan –
94.7 this morning. Graeme Joffe
@WilladieLeeu – Dis hom, sorry nie Van Zyl nie.
@dWeePer – 20
You said it, he will bring back the fire in that enginroom of the Lions, and with Heinke there, Alberts and Jano will have a field day at the office.
Still a pitty we lost Mostert to the Sharks, (or was it Senekal), bit confussed, think i need :coffee:
1 van die Leeus se ander ysters, Gerhard Vosloo speel die land aan die brand in Frankryk, en hulle kyk na hom, om vir die Hane te speel, Go GERHARD!!!!!
@Mr-T – #26 Dis baie cool….hy ons Saffas se naam hoog
@Pietman – Ons het erg baie ouens verloor, en mens kan nie daai leemtes oornag vul nie. Na die Super 14 het ons verloor….
Anton v Zyl-Slot
Gerhard Mostert – Slot
Dewald Senekal – Slot
Willie Wepener – Haker
Ettiene Ryneke – Haker
Ernst Joubert – Losvoorspeler
Andre Pretorius – Losskakel
Almal weg by die Leeus.
HEinke vd Merwe – Stut
Lawrence Sepaka – Stut
Janus Labuschagne – Slot
Louise Ludick – Heelagter
Beserings
So, ja,
@Mr-T – #28
they need :coins: :coins: :coins: :coins: :coins:
@Tripples – Ek sal maar die UK lottery moet wen, en die span koop, amper soos in die NFL, LOL,
Maar ja, iets sal moet gebeur, en al hoe hulle weer gaan geld maak, is as die pawiljoene ook kan vol, en dit gebeur ook net as jou span wen rugby speel. Kyk maar hier in 2000 of so, selfs Loftus was nie vol daai tyd nie, want dit het nie so goed gegaan daar nie, en kyk nou……
