The Lions have in all likelihood acquired the services of English lock Simon Shaw.

He has given his undertaking to the Lions that he will join them in next year’s Super 14 and Currie Cup. Shaw, who was part of the England World Cup winning squad in 2003 and part of the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa earlier this year, will bring much needed beef and a wealth of experience to the Lions squad.Simon Shaw

Shaw, who stands at 2.03m, and tips the scale at 122kg, turned 36 three weeks ago.

He is a similiar player to Bakkies Botha and played a big part in the British and Irish Lions much improved forward performance in the second test against the Boks. Having the experience of winning a world cup in 2003 and playing in a second final in 2007, Shaw could possibly be the leadership that the Lions have been lacking in recent times. Shaw only needs to put pen to paper. This is expected to happen within the next couple of days.

Shaw has represented England 52 times.

This news comes just days after the Lions managed to contract Springbok wing Tonderai Chavanga.

    @Mr-T – #30 Dis ‘n feit, vol pawiljoene help beslis maar tot dan moet hulle elders geld inwin sodat die span kan wen en die pawiljoene dan vol kan wees dan sal mens begin terugkry van jou belegging af…..someone or some company willhave to bite the bullet and front up some serious cash…..

    SPEEL DIE LOTTO MR-T 😀

    ok, i have my doubts about this “signing”
    my biggest concern of course is the cost involved with getting shaw here.
    then theres questions about the duration of his contract. if its only for 1 s14 season, then you’ll have to ask the question whether the impact he’ll have on this team will be significant given the fact that he’ll be working under a coach thats still trying to find his feet.

    ANCYL President Julius Malema reportedly has more than R5000 in outstanding traffic fines to his name in Johannesburg.

    The controversial leader has yet to cough up for at least 14 traffic offences.

    Malema was slapped with a R1100 fine after hitting a lofty 169km/h in a 120km/h zone back in September 2008 near Midrand. The day before, the ANCYL leader was caught slamming on the brakes of his Mercedes Benz C350, slowing to a 146km/h as the camera flashed.

    Rapport contacted Malema to ask him about the fines.

    “Let me tell you my friend, I have defeated you and your apartheid regime and I’m going to defeat you again, once and for all!”

    “I am a child of heroes and heroines of the struggle. I am not a child of cowards and oppressors. I am not a child of an imperialist. I have defeated colonisers. I am going to defeat the children of colonisers,” Malema said.

    @Ashley – #33

    Ash I think that even if he is only signed for 1 x S14 season, the experience he brings to the team will definately rub off on the youngsters and he can do some intensive skills transfer with them, I actually think that this is a rather big bonus for the Lions at this stage

  • 36

    And sign someone like Wilkinson to help with our no10 woes. Yes, the man is a walking casualty ward, but you play him in short spells, and the experience he brings will rub off on the youngsters Taute and Boshoff

    Okaay rugbypraters, hierdie prediker gaan nou eers kroeg toe.
    Sien julle later.
    Tjeers.

  • 42

    @Disa
    But if he’s good, and can play 40-60 minutes a pop, he has a wealth of experience to share

  • 43

    I wonder what Joe Snyman, Wouter Moore and co think of this signing…

  • 44

    @Rugby_Princess – Hi.

    I just want to make something very clear… Humans are not responsible for earthquakes or tsunami`s. That goes for global warming also.

    Do not be open for abuse from so called authorities who need you to feel bad about yourself.

  • 45

    @The-Pill – we need to plant forests all over the earth to offset global warming then everything will come right in about 20 years. O:-)

    Am happy for the Lions i hope Shaw plays well for them, they deserve a break

  • 46

    @robdylan
    Excuse my ignorance, but who are Wouter Moore and Joe Snyman?

  • 47

    @Lion4ever

    Dis ons tweede slotte. Moore is n reus, maar altwee nog baie jonk. Ons toekoms. Met Shaw daar kan hulle baie by hom leer.

    Thanks Willa. Best school for any player is between the 4 lines of the rugby field. Having a player like Shaw will make the lessons easier for them.
