Johannesburg – The Lions kept their slim semi-final Absa Currie Cup aspirations alive by crushing a hapless Boland with the massive score of 88-15 in their one-sided clash at Coca-Cola Park Saturday afternoon and scoring 13 tries in the process.

Running in six tries in the first half and seven in the second to lead 41-8 at the break, the Lions secured their fourth and bonus-point try after only half an hour and increased their log points to 32 to move into a temporary fifth place on the Currie Cup log prior to the Cheetahs and Bulls clash which followed the game.

Boland, however, rocked the home team early by scoring the first try of the game in the fifth minute through eighthman Junior Bester to go up 5-0, but that was to be the only time they would have the lead in the game.

Bester followed up a kick in the Lions 22 from right wing Deon Scholtz and when the bounce tricked Lions’ fullback Alwyn Hollenbach, Bester was there to grab the opportunity. Boland centre Danre Gerber, who earlier missed with a 51m penalty, hit the upright with his touchline conversion.

The Lions came storming back with centre Jannie Boshoff breaking through the Boland midfield defence before putting Hollenbach in possession who dived over for the Lions first try in the 10th minute; flyhalf Herkie Kruger, who helped himself to 23 points, was spot-on with the conversion to give the home team a 7-5 lead.

With nothing less but pride at stake both teams didn’t hesitate to give the ball air and Kruger extended the Lions lead to 10-5 nine minutes later when the Boland were penalised by referee Mark Lawrence for going offside at a ruck close to their goal-line. No 8 Willem Alberts scored the Lions second try barely three minutes later and, with Kruger missing his first kick in his third attempt, the Lions stretched their lead to 15-5.

Gerber narrowed the Lions lead to 8-15 when he succeeded with his first kick at goal but the Lions would have none of a close contest and drove over the Boland line in the 28th minute for a try by prop Gert Muller to take the score to 22-8.

The Lions bonus point try was scored nine minutes before the break courtesy of wing Dusty Noble after at least five players handled the ball and the slick handling of the home team underlined the difference in class between the two sides (29-9).

Two more tries by flank Derick Minnie and centre Doppies la Grange, the Man of the Match, gave the Lions a handy 41-8 cushion at halftime.

In the second half, Lions coach Hans Coetzee sent the matric pupil from Krugersdorp, Jaco Taute, on to replace fullback Alwyn Hollenbach, while prop Kevin Buys and lock Nico Luus replaced Gert Muller and veteran Willem Stoltz. Earl Rose, Nico Luus, Walter Venter and Todd Clever also took to the field.

The second half tries for the Lions were added by Alberts, his second, scrumhalf Chris Jonck, captain Cobus Grobbelaar, Nico Luus, Franco van der Merwe and Walter Venter (2) while Boland score an intercept try through wing Deon Scholtz.
