The Griquas hosted the Golden Lions in the second round of the Currie Cup this afternoon in Kimberley, South Africa. The Griquas won 36 / 31.
It certainly looks like the Lions have shot their last bolts in attempting to make the semi-spots, losing today in this hard fought match. Their chances are certainly still mathematicaaly alive, but only mathematically.
On the other hand, the Griquas are now on 38 Log Points and only need about 3 more points from 3 remaining games, to make the semi’s.
Here is a match report from the Griquas web site:
GWK Griquas entertained Xerox Lions at Diamantveld High School facility in their Currie Cup fixture on Saturday afternoon.
The home side were soon in trouble when the Lions left wing Johan Jackson went over for a try in the far corner in the first minute, converted by Herkie Kruger. Griquas came back from the kick off with a penalty by Naas Olivier which he repeated 5 minutes later, taking Griquas to within one point of the Lions, 7-6. This was however short lived as Lions eighthman went over in the same place as their first try, conversion missed. The home team notched up another Olivier penalty in the 14th minute, bring the score to 12-9 to the Lions. In the 28th minute the Lions were awarded a penalty for off sides by Griquas which was kicked by Kruger to stretch the Lions lead tp 15-9, but 4 minutes from the halftime break, Naas O;livier returned the compliment, taking the score to 15-12 at halftime, in favour of the visitors.
Griquas got the second half off to a good start.with a penalty in the 4th minute to even up the scores, but 4 minutes later, Herkie Kruger’s penalty gave the visitors the edge again by 3, 18-15. Griquas took the lead in the 14th minute when winger Trompie Nonthsinga crossed the line, converted by Olivier, but 2 minutes later, Naas Olivier broke through the Lions defence to score under the posts, converted by himself, stretching Griquas lead to 29-18. Lions came back via a penalty when Sarel Pretorius, Griquas scrumhalf was yellow carded, 29-21. However, Lions came back strongly when center Alwyn Hollenbach broke the Griquas defence to score a converted try, bringing the score to within one point of Griquas, 29-28. @Supa Die Bloubul – Hello Supa, How you today boet?
We are having great weather here in Umhlanga today. Not a cloud in sight. Should be good for the Sharks/Cheetahs game later on at the Tank.
I feel so relaxed, I think I’ll skip todays minnow game and have a nap yaaaawn…
Oh, Kwas may just win this by the way…
@Treehugger – Hello Treehugger, I think its best to ask GBS he knows more about that than most of us.
Cheetah front may cause havoc today
A Cheetah win will shuffle the cards very nicely……..
Os has been working wonders in Bloem after consulting with Rassie 🙂
@Puma – Greetings Puma, how you feeling about the Sharks game
@Puma – I think the man is very busy 🙂 Thought somebody might know whats happening of the top of there head, as i know nothing bout computers and it might be something simple.
@Treehugger – Feel confident. We have a good team and a really good bench. Should win. Well Cheetah are our bogey team so really hoping we do win. They have Brussow playing. Just have memories of him getting all our ball in the S14 when we lost to them. Just feel we should win today with our team.
5@Treehugger – An IP conflict means that your Network on your computers is not configured properly (it basicaaly means that 2 computers are fighting for the same IP address)…. and clashing when they both try to connect to the network with the same IP Address.
You would have to phone me to resolve this, mail me with your Cell No, so I can phone you..
@Puma –
Howzit Puma! Hope your team win today!
@Treehugger – GBS is the person that will know TH. Think he is cleaning his pool getting it ready for summer 😀 I read that earlier. He will be here during the Bulls game.
8@Puma – ONLY more than MOST of you ??? That’s an insult… hehehe
@Supa Die Bloubul – 15
Thanks Supa and I also am hoping Bulls win with a bonus that will pull them up the log. I have no doube Bulls will be in the semi. Just hope they are not in 4th position then we have to play each other in the Semi. Just think now with their Boks back they will pull up to a higher postion. Then should play WP in the semi.
Still think its going to be a Sharks/Bulls final. Hoping it is as nothing is quite as exciting in our domestic rugby when those two teams are playing against each other.
@Puma – doube = meant doubt.
18@Puma –
exactly my thoughts.
@Supa Die Bloubul – 20
