Johannesburg –  The Lions have not written off Earl Rose, but everyone wants to see more of Earl Lewis.
Rose, who toured Britain with the Springboks last year, was axed from the Lions’ squad after their 20-25 defeat to Western Province in a Currie Cup match at Newlands.

That led to a debut for 22-year-old Lewis in Saturday’s 20-13 win over the Blue Bulls.

“We expect a lot from Lewis. He was a prolific try-scorer in the matches he played for the University of Johannesburg this year,” said Lions coach Hans Coetzee.

“When you pick a young player like that, you have to give him the freedom to play. I think he played very well and has lots of talent.
“We knew he was a good runner, but he also showed that he can kick well.”

Lewis started off nervously and missed a high kick from the Bulls.

He left the field with cramp later on, but improved throughout as he grew in confidence.

Lewis has probably done enough to retain his place in the side, which is bad news for Rose.

However, Coetzee said Rose’s time at the Lions is not over.

“It’s never nice for a player to be omitted from the side, but he took it well,” said Coetzee.

“I have a strong relationship with him and will be delighted if he can return stronger.”
