The Springboks arrived yesterday afternoon at O R Tambo International Airport… and who was there to meet them… the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma.
It was a rupturous welcome by hundreds of supporters, who gave the Springboks a noisy welcome but everybody listened attently when the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, spoke.
The Springboks are at present World Cup Champions, Ranked No 1 in the World, are the World 7’s Champions, Tri-Nations Champions, have won the Mandela Challenge Plate (against Australia) and the Freedom Cup (against New Zealand).
South African rugby is alive and well !
Jacob Zuma told John Smit and his men they did the country proud.
Before speaking, Zuma was presented with a team blazer. He proudly wore the blazer and proudly accepted a No 3 Bokke jersey from John Smit.
“They make us proud… those countries that come to play them think twice before any game,” Zuma said.
“I can’t remember a Boks team that beat New Zealand in succession, proving once more that indeed we are the best,” he said as the crowd roared in approval.
“The Springboks are special citizens of South Africa,” added Zuma.
“They are a very special part of our country and I had to be here to welcome back the heroes who make the country special. They make us proud when they play [at home] and when they play over there.”
“We were all glued to our TVs watching you. I watched the game on Saturday on television and at one point when I wanted to jump into the game to help the team.”
“I felt there was something I should do. We saw things that were magical: a drop kick from so far away that nearly made it.”
John Smit said “It is very special,” referring to being crowned the Tri-Nations champions.
“It was good to come back having won the game.”
“It wouldn’t have been as good to wait for the result of the next match.”
“We really wanted to make sure we could win it and celebrate in the proper manner. To come back and be received by the president is really over the top for us, it means a helluva lot to us.”
Springbok coach Peter de Villiers also had praise for the fact that President Zuma welcomed the Springboks.
“It’s been a phenomenal couple of weeks, we really appreciate the support we are getting,” John Smit said.
From our side, as Rugby-Talk, we also want to say, WELCOME BACK Springboks, you have done us all proud !
Jan Zoom-Zoom !

The little bar in the Morgan Bay hotel on the Wild Coast was packed.
It was one of those days where it was easy to feel like an outsider; all the locals were speaking Xhosa and by the tone of their voices they were getting very exited about the game on the TV.
Expecting to see the Soweto derby Chiefs/Pirates game on the box the ‘outsider’ was blown away by the fact that the Boks/ Italy game was in full swing. Cries of “Victor” rang out everytime Matfield won a line-out and “Kankowski” when ever Kanko got the ball (until he got stretchered off). Of course, it was bedlam when the local Odwa Ndungane came close to scoring.
The final result was greated with tremendous applause and on the way out the “outsider” wondered whether it would be possible to instead of watching the upcoming Tri-Nations game against the ABs live at Newlands, to rather fly up, spend the weekend in beautiful Morgan Bay and catch the game on the box in the little pub…
Morgan Bay, Wild Coast – now that’s rugby country!
@fender –
Hooohaaaah!
Sounds like my kind of pub…Morgan Bay?
Must check it out next time out.
Ash, you coming bru?
Klink na n lekka plek, onse mense….
Mirrag Pietman,
Unforgettable experience, Pietman. And comes highly recommended.
You’re acquainted with the Wild Coast?
@fender –
I have been there a couple of times, mostly at Kenton-On-Sea, on my way to the Wild Coast.
But I can relate.
The boys here on RT will tell you that I run a sports pub, here in Daejeon, South Korea.
Place called ‘Pete’s Place’.
When the photo gallery is up , I will show you some pictures of us.
Plenty of KZN boys here, frequenting during game time mostly…..very ‘Beast looking’ lot 🙂
Mostly English teachers.
Some of them come down from Seoul 270 kms away over weekends, just to watch and have a beer and a bbq….
So, I have a ‘home away from home’, they sleep on the floor sometimes, but it’s nice….they don’t mind, and neither do the wife and I.
Hell, we even had Marokka Swallows here once!
@Fern –
@Fern –
Ek soek daai twak.
@Pietman –
@Pietman –
And we do putu pap, sheba sauce, and steaks as well….we even serve the occasional Castle Lager….when the Amaboko win!
Howzat!
@Fern –
Gee my die naam asb.
Dan sal ek bestel.
@Pietman –

@Fern –
Mail my eers jong.
Netnou is ek voor die twak daar in SA….as dit so lank gaan vat soos laas keer.
Ek is oppad oor n maand of so, onthou?
Great stuff, Pietman! Good to hear that you’re keeping the flag flying over there.
And I know Kenton quite well – its one of my wife’s fave spots. But you need to check out other Transkei spots like Seagulls, Trennerys, Wavecrest, Coffee Bay and Umngazi and Embotyi further north as well. Really good for the soul. Of course, GBS and all the other Pta boys will love it – the beaches all feature bulls on the beach!
Anyway, I got to go – I’ve got a soundcheck for a blues gig at a place called Die Boer. Bet we never thought we’d see ‘blues’ and ‘boer’ in the same sentence 20 years ago, hey Pietman?
Only in South Africa. 😉
@fender –
Ek is n weskusklong eintlik….maar ek loop baie rond langs die SA kus!
Sien jou later fender.
@Pietman –
Nee wat as jy oor n maand hier is gaan dit vinniger wees as jy self oor vat as jy terug gaan.
Later mense ek moet loop.
@Fern –
@Pietman –
@Fern –
Se JY!
Cheers Pietman ek moet nou waai,moet so n bietjie gaan werk by die huis vannaand.
Goed gaan.
@Fern –
Waaraan is hy oorlede, weet jy?
WP se seisoen is verby…..’flash in the pan’, ‘overs ska-do-vers’….
End van die prent.
Very astute politician is Mr Zuma.
Meets the Boks, meets the World Champ’s athletes, visits the 20/20 cricket match between the combined schools side and the All Stars.
Seems to me that he knows what makes the SA phsychie tick. SPORT SPORT SPORT.
