The Blue Bulls hosted the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in round 2 of the Currie Cup. The Bulls won 30 / 27 in a nail-biter.
The official web site of the Bulls summarises the match as follows:
A workmanlike performance by the Vodacom Blue Bulls saw them beating the courageous Vodacom Free State Cheetahs 30-27 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon.
Captain Victor Matfield said during the week that he expects the Blue Bulls to take two or three games to ‘settle in’ after ten players have been involved in the Vodacom Tri-Nations, but they started off pretty well and after 13 minutes the Bulls have built up a neat 10-0 lead thanks to a Gerhard van den Heever try and five points coming from the boot of Morne Steyn.
Shortly after Van den Heever’s try Dewald Potgieter, who was again at his rampant best, charged down a kick to dive over for the Bulls’ second and with the score at 17-3 the Bulls were dominating all aspects of the game.
With Matfield and big Danie Rossouw back in the mix the Bulls had no problems in the lineouts and the set scrums were fairly evenly contested throughout the first 40 minutes although neither of the teams could stamp down their authority at tighthead (but on this point it has to be noted that there isn’t a tighthead in world rugby that consistently dominates the right hand side of the scrum because you scrum in effect against two opponents).
The Bulls’ fetching duo of Potgieter and Deon Stegmann had a titanic battle with Heinrich Brussow and Ashley Johnson in the loose and with Steyn continuing where he left off in the Super 14 the Bulls’ scoreboard were constantly ticking.
Steyn kicked three penalties and converted both tries in the first half to take the Bulls into a 23-10 lead at the break after the Cheetahs’ Fabian Juries scored a brilliant individualistic try shortly before halftime.
As underdogs playing away from home the Cheetahs had absolutely nothing to lose and could therefore afford play high risk rugby and this eventually paid off in the 44th minute when Juries’ partner on the wing Lionel Mapoe scored another five pointer.
With the score at 23-17 the Bulls realized they were in for a game and being one of the world’s most professional outfits they immediately shifted to a higher gear and it wasn’t long before Wynand Olivier cut through the visitors’ midfield for try number three.
Olivier scored a minute after Johnson (Free State’s number 8) had to leave the field following a yellow card for a professional foul, but with Johnson on the sideline the Cheetahs showed that they are NOT going to be pushovers as they succeeded in quickly scoring ten points of their own as a result of another try by Juries and five points via Potgieter’s boot.
During the last 15 minutes the Bulls were clinging to their 30-27 lead and although they could not score the fourth try they did enough at the end to see off the desperate Cheetahs.
Points:
Blue Bulls: 3 Penalties & 2 Conversions Morne Steyn, Try Gerhard van den Heever & Dewalt Potgieter & Wynand Olivier
Cheetahs: 2 Penalties & 3 Conversions Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Try Fabian Juries (2) & Lionel Mapoe

@SA Barbarians – See the Keo clan acting all righteous and mighty over there…

Anyhows, enough of them, this is R-T.
@SA Barbarians –
Naaaaaaaaaaah, bad idea, just fibbing.
Can you imagine us walking in there, sayng ‘howzit’…?
@The-Pill –
@The-Pill – True words :pill:
@Pietman – 320
Dis presies waarom ek so baklei wanneer mense alle WP ondersteuners oor dieselfde kam skeer as daai gemors
@SA Barbarians –
Ja, was lekker daai tyd.
@SA Barbarians –
Moenie bekommer.
Guys
Something I have found extremely vexing at times-
It seems as if the average rugby supporter has imo a flawed way of evaluating and judging a player’s performance. They tend to look at a players performance and judge it off the cuff- which leads to a type of idolization that is often far too forgiving and biased.
Surely one should consider, given the playsituation, what can reasonably and objectively be expected of an international quality player to produce, compare the specific player to that benchmark in the specific situation and then come up with an opinion of the player. If you then evaluate other players in the same position on the same basis it should be fairly easy to come up with a kind of ranking system.
Often supporters see a player come up with a good carry or score a good try, and in their opinion that makes the player the best, but they forget that the game is 80 minutes long, and surely the best rated player should be the guy who performs the closest to the to-be-expected-of an-international(ideal) standard/benchmark in the most situations/plays during a match, and not the guy who produces one or two moments of brilliance and for the rest is ineffective and /or even often makes crucial errors which leads to points against his team or an inability by his team to score points, both of which will ultimately lead to his team losing more matches than what they win if the law of averages is applied. And yet coaches and supporters too often tend to go for the flash rather than the best.
My question is this: Who conributes the most- the player who keeps the opposition from scoring and gets his team into attacking/scoring position, or the guy who scores the try but is conspicuous by his absense for the rest of the game?
Are there other guys out there that feel like me, or am I the only one?
I think that PdV has succeeded in getting this right. He has more of the best and less of the flash in his team than prvious coaches, with the glaring exceptions being his no 8’s. In my mind there are certain prerequisites for an eigthman. One of these is the highest workrate and involvement on attack and defence, not necessarily scoring the tries/points, but setting up his teammates by acting as a link. With the greatest of respect, but both our current 8’s disappear when the going gets really tough and will rather try and score themselves than pass to a guy in a better position, nine timres out of ten going too far and losing the ball in contact.
It should be about what is best for the team rather than the individual. I honestly believe that it is also the problem challenging the Wallabies at the moment- too many individuals and not enough team!
Just a quick one –
I feel very uncomfortable when we start slagging others off, people that often we used to have fun and banter with on Keo.
It is a great space here and I hope we can keep some opinions to ourselves!
@carol – Carol hi there, girl you ready for the England SA game this afternoon. You going to watch?
@superBul – Hiya superBul, beautiful day a bit of a Jazz day going on in town may pop there later with WRS, however I do HATE Jazz!!!
