Sydney – Springbok loose forward Schalk Burger believes he might have cracked a rib in South Africa’s 32-29 Tri-Nations victory against the All Blacks in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Saturday.

Juan Smith, who is suffering from a lower back injury, failed a fitness test on the morning of the Test and Burger was drafted into the starting line-up as late replacement.

The loose trio of Pierre Spies, Heinrich Brüssow and Burger however combined well. Burger had just started to regain his form of old when he had to leave the field in the 68th minute with a suspected broken rib and was replaced by Ryan Kankowski on the side of the scrum.

“I think one of my ribs is broken. You can feel the bone sticking out here,” he said at Auckland airport before the team’s departure via Sydney for South Africa on Monday.

“At this stage I don’t know how serious it is. I will go to the Western Province High Performance centre in Bellville to ask the doctor to assess the extent of the injury.”

Burger has not played much rugby recently. He was suspended for eight weeks after he was found guilty of making reckless contact in the eye area Irish centre Luke Fitzgerald during the British and Irish Lions series.

Free Stater Heinrich Brüssow stepped into the team in Burger’s absence and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. As a result the fiery WP loose forward has struggled to regain his place in the Bok starting line-up.

“I would really have loved to be able to play in the Currie Cup for WP again, but now it seems that is not going to happen. I will have to wait to hear what the doctors have to say. I have already experienced a broken rib in the past and this injury feels the same to me,” said a disappointed Burger.

    Sharks
    WP
    Bulls
    Cheetahs

    My team will not be going to the semis this year 🙁

    @grootblousmile – 235 Maybe he is not a #15, but …. you need a #10 that is an offensive threat & can launch an offense. Not sure Morne can do either. Now you can’t leave him off the team, he wins games with his kicking so I figure better to plug him in at #15 rather than the wing.

    Cheetahs beat WP so easy this weekend. Looked like they didn’t even have to get out of second gear. Just toying with the Capetonians.

    @KingPaul – Ek het op n WP wen gehoop, ook so gepick, Wou wel he julle skrum buble moes bars.
    Wou ook he julle moet wen en nie n wakeup call kry nie. Met dit ingedagte is die dalk n goeie ding dat julle nou vasgeval het.

    @grootblousmile – I probably need the exercise more to be truthful!!

    @JimT – 232

    Nothing much. Beautiful day here but just enjoying the feeling of being Tri-Nation champs again.

    @JimT – 242

    Hoping Jim, Would be brilliant to win back to back world cups. No other country has done it.

    Still too early to tell though. The team could be all different by then. Hope not. Most are young enough to still be around then as long as no serious injuries.

    @Puma – 252 so if the Argies come on board will the championships be known as the “Quad Nations”? 😐

  • 255

    @superBul – 238 My point is that you can’t be satisfied with the status quo. Need to look for improvement. Only places I see are #8 & #10. If you are content to leave things as they are fine. But the team is not multi-dimensional. Other teams will figure out your game sooner or later. So Boks must add another dimension to their game in time for RWC.

    Despite all the hand wringing over the front row I think they are ok & will get better.

    @Ed_the_Lion@Ed_the_Lion – 240 Hi Ed. Happy now you the champs?

  • 257

    @Ed_the_Lion – Dis hoekom die wp rustyd 26 op gehad het ons was stuck in 2e rat

    @Ed_the_Lion – 247
    Ek sien meeste pick die Cheetahs maar hulle moet die Sharks en Bulle weg speel volgende. Alles kan oor wees na die volgende 2 games. Griekwas het net so moeilike pad en kan teen die Leeus die voorsprong op die Cheetahs verder rek.

    255@JimT – That is why Earl Rose needs to play flyhalf. You never know what he is going to do. 😆

    256@JimT – Very happy JimT. Not every weekend that the Bokke and Lions win, and the Bulls and Province lose. hehehe

    257@smallies72 – Mense hier het dit nie geweet nie.

    258@superBul – Miskien die Griekwas, maar Leeus se seisoen is verby.

  • 262

    @grootblousmile – 260 Slap rustig GBS, ons praat weer more! 😉

  • 263

    @JimT – Morne played well, his breaks was good, i feel that WO will do better next to him.

  • 264

    @smallies72 – 243 I think I said the other day I would like to see Spies tried out again on the wing. To start with in the S14. Now maybe he would be slow to turnaround with kicks placed behind him. He’s big, strong & fast but seems to be slow off the mark. Thus he rarely gets across the advantage line from scrums. He really poses a dilemma for the coaches.

  • 265

    @carol – 244 oh, oh, here’s trouble ! 🙂

  • 266

    @carol – 254

    Not sure Carol, probably the 4 Nations.

  • 267

    @superBul
    Ons skrum bubbel het beslis nie gebars nie. Van die skrums was die Vrystaat bo, en van hulle was WP bo.
    Voor Saterdag se game was WP die span wat sover die minste strafskoppe afgestaan het in die CC die jaar. Teen halftyd Saterdag was dit al iets soos 8 teen 1? Ons het nie eers een keer in 80min ‘n geleentheid gehad om ‘n strafskop pale toe aan te le nie? Al troos is darem dat ons vyf agterspeler driee gedruk het!! Maar ons verdediging was op twee tye power(kak) en dit het direk gelei tot Mapoe en Bosman se driee. Veral Joe Peterson kort ‘n paar wakker klappe!

    @smallies72 – 246 too much boosting, I mean boasting, heh, heh 🙂

  • 269

    @grootblousmile – 260

    Cheers GBS. You sound tired boet.

  • 270

    @Ed_the_Lion – 259 Seems to me that Earl Rose would cause migraine for both sets of coaches 🙂
