Sydney – Springbok loose forward Schalk Burger believes he might have cracked a rib in South Africa’s 32-29 Tri-Nations victory against the All Blacks in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Saturday.
Juan Smith, who is suffering from a lower back injury, failed a fitness test on the morning of the Test and Burger was drafted into the starting line-up as late replacement.
The loose trio of Pierre Spies, Heinrich Brüssow and Burger however combined well. Burger had just started to regain his form of old when he had to leave the field in the 68th minute with a suspected broken rib and was replaced by Ryan Kankowski on the side of the scrum.
“I think one of my ribs is broken. You can feel the bone sticking out here,” he said at Auckland airport before the team’s departure via Sydney for South Africa on Monday.
“At this stage I don’t know how serious it is. I will go to the Western Province High Performance centre in Bellville to ask the doctor to assess the extent of the injury.”
Burger has not played much rugby recently. He was suspended for eight weeks after he was found guilty of making reckless contact in the eye area Irish centre Luke Fitzgerald during the British and Irish Lions series.
Free Stater Heinrich Brüssow stepped into the team in Burger’s absence and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. As a result the fiery WP loose forward has struggled to regain his place in the Bok starting line-up.
“I would really have loved to be able to play in the Currie Cup for WP again, but now it seems that is not going to happen. I will have to wait to hear what the doctors have to say. I have already experienced a broken rib in the past and this injury feels the same to me,” said a disappointed Burger.

We need to watch for that. We do get caught out a lot with no one at home there.
Sharks done just that a few times this year and it worked well. Remember Frans Steyn putting in a nice cross kick and we got a try out of it.
hallo mede rugby bloggers

Ek beter verder werk – ons gesels weer ander dag

Goeie tydsberekening KP!!
Sal jy oorvat as enigste WP onbevooroordeelde korrespondent as ek nou waai?

We are all to aware of that. ABs hate losing to us and we really hate losing to them too. Our biggest rivals ever. Maybe this is the Boks turn to rule over a few years. ABs have had it their own way for a long,long time. We have huge depth too. Lots of youngsters coming through to knocking on the door that will keep the ones there now on their toes.
For now it feels brilliant to have such a great, great team.
@grootblousmile – 209 Hi GBS. Thanks for the mail, food for thought. Must hunt up those books you suggested.
Question of the day: how to improve the Boks team? Only thing I can think of: find a new #8 & a new #10. Have to keep Morne on the team for kicking. But that solves itself with Frans off to Frogland. Plug Morne in at #15. Otherwise team looks good to go.
Any suggestions on #8 #10?
@smallies72 – 222
@Puma – @Puma – 213 Hi Puma. Watszup in your world today?
@KingPaul – A.j
@grootblousmile – 221 Make sure you don’t get a case of vertigo 🙂
229@JimT – Morne is NOT a 15, hy is a No 10…. rather get someone at No 15…
Spies at No 8 fumbles too many balls behind the scrum… but there is Duane Vermeulen, Alberts & Dewalt Potgieter on standby…. all 3 great players…
@SA Barbarians – Lekker en jy SAB. Ek blog self min deesdae. Lekker besig.
@smallies72 – @smallies72 – 223 Doing fine my man. I assume your chest size of 72″ was not expanded heh, heh 🙂
@JimT – Jim if they touch Morne now there will be war. He is by far our best no 10.
